Hydrangea (/haɪˈdreɪndʒiə/; common names hydrangea or hortensia) is a genus of 70–75 species of flowering plants native to Asia and the Americas. By far the greatest species diversity is in eastern Asia, notably Korea, China, and Japan. Most are shrubs 1 to 3 meters tall, but some are small trees, and others lianas reaching up to 30 m (98 ft) by climbing up trees. They can be either deciduous or evergreen, though the widely cultivated temperate species are all deciduous.
Having been introduced to the Azores, H. macrophylla is now very common, particularly on Faial, which is known as the "blue island" due to the vast number of hydrangeas present on the island.
‘Hydrangea’ is derived from Greek and means ‘water vessel’, which is in reference to the shape of its seed capsules. The earlier name, Hortensia, is a Latinised version of the French given name Hortense, referring to the wife of Jean-André Lepaute.

Hortensia (Hydrangea) is een geslacht bloeiende planten uit de hortensiafamilie (Hydrangeaceae). Er zijn ongeveer 100 soorten verspreid over de hele wereld, waarvan sommige in het wild voorkomen. Vooral in China en Japan komen hortensia's veel voor.

This hydrangea shot is 100% inspired by some of the incredible hydrangea shots I've seen from Japan this spring/summer. A worthy attempt, I suppose, but I don't think I'll ever be able to capture the beauty of the hydrangea the way the Japanese can.

All over Maine we saw beautiful Hydrangea Trees, bushes. hedges in full bloom. They were amazing! We have some Hydrangea bushes but they stay small. I don't know what variety these were but obviously you can train them into anything. This Hydrangea hedge outside of Augusta Maine borders a Cemetery and stands at least 8-10 ft tall!!!

One of my favorite flowers is a hydrangea. I fell in love with them when I was 19 and saw them in a catalog. They don't grow too well in the desert of S. CA. I babied 3 plants when moving to the Birmingham, AL area...but sadly I had to leave them behind. What a blessing to find a few bushes growing in my yard at Ft. Benning. The hydrangea is awesome, but hydrangea bokeh really rocks!
My internet is down and I just had to see if I could add a picture through my phone. I took this with my E-30,processed it in Lightroom and CS3 then transferred it to my phone via USB then uploaded it from there. Technology just keeps getting better and better!

The hydrangeas before the deer showed up and devoured them. Oh, well.
The sandbag dike had not only been protecting the house from the flood waters, but also the gardens from the deer. Not anymore. Now that most of the sandbags have been removed, the deer have returned to their all-you-can-eat buffet. Time for other protection measures.
