The Hungerburgbahn is a hybrid funicular railroad in Innsbruck, Austria, which connects the hillside district of Hungerburg with the city center. The current line opened on December 1, 2007, replacing an earlier line that operated from 1906 to 2005. The new Hungerburgbahn is one of the city's landmarks. The stations were designed by Zaha Hadid.

Zaha Hadid´s Nordkettenbahn in Innsbruck, Tyrol - The opening will be on December 8th.

 

Let's hope that all the glass panels that broke during installation are back up and ready to be shown to the public and that the noise of the train isn't as bad as everyone says.

Die Hungerburgbahn ist eine am 1. Dezember 2007 eröffnete Standseilbahn in der Tiroler Landeshauptstadt Innsbruck. Sie verbindet die Innenstadt über eine geschwungene Trasse mit der Hungerburg am Berghang nördlich des Inns und ersetzte die alte Hungerburgbahn von 1906. Diese verlief steiler, fast geradlinig und fast genau 1 km weniger weit nur vom rechten, südlichen Innufer und nur auf den letzten 100 m gleichen Trasse zur selben Bergstation, woran noch die stählerne Innbrücke und weit oben ein Betonviadukt erinnern.

 

Die neue Hungerburgbahn gilt als eines der Wahrzeichen der Stadt, zwei Abschnitte verlaufen unterirdisch in Tunnels, sie ist eingleisig mit mittiger Ausweiche und mit 1440 mm geringfügig breiter als in Normalspur ausgeführt.

Nach zwei Jahren Bauzeit wurde im Dezember 2007 die neue Hungerburgbahn mit einem altstadtnäheren, unterirdischen Endbahnhof beim Kongresshaus und einer teilweise unterirdischen Trassenführung unter einer Durchzugsstraße und im Berghang in Betrieb genommen.

 

Die renommierte Architektin Zaha Hadid, die in Innsbruck schon die Bergiselschanze geplant hatte, konnte mit ihrem Projekt einen ausgeschriebenen Wettbewerb gewinnen.
