Soldier is an in-house monthly magazine produced and published by the MOD. It was founded in March 1945, in Brussels, a morale boosting idea of Field Marshal Montgomery. Until 1997, it was a fortnightly publication.
This book of cartoons from the magazine, was produced in 1960 when National Service was still in force.

L'altro giorno rovesciai per errore il cestino dei rifiuti. Il tutto mi sembrò assumere un disegno, una certa perfezione. Come se avessi completato un quadro aggiungendo l'ultimo ritocco, così ho deciso di immortalarlo.
Nessun animale è stato maltrattato durante le riprese.

Vanina Michel, Jean La Pierre, Cécile et sa guitare, She Me, Cédric Nadeau, Wil Riva, Rachid Azouz, Michelle Médina, Chantal Nonis et moi-même jouerons ce dimanche 12 décembre au Caf Omja, 125 rue des cités, 93300 Aubervilliers, à partir de 14h (je devrais passer vers 17h-18h), dans le cadre du Festival de la Scène Ensemble (3ème édition).
Le tout, à l'initiative du chanteur Zayen, est organisé par l'Association Les Artistes des Couleurs et de la Diversité et se déroule du 07 au 17 décembre. Est proposé de la musique, du cinéma, des ateliers, de la danse, du chant, des rencontres et des échanges entre artistes, une grande scène ouverte,...
Un événement propice aux échanges entre cultures dans une volonté de construire une citoyenneté ouverte sur le monde.
L'entrée est gratuite.

I was busy concentrating on this rusty old seafront shelter in Southsea when two young women walked through the shot with their dog.
One of them did a cheeky pose for the camera without pausing and they both walked off laughing.
A priceless fun moment shared with two complete strangers but which was full of humour.
What I like about this image is how it reflects life.
People suddenly appear in your life, create an impact and memories and then are gone. They can be there for a split second or for many years but they leave behind them a memory (like these 2 young women) that cannot be forgotten.
I would have liked to have shown these 2 young women this image but it was a fleeting moment between passing strangers.
My fond memory is the fun they had being cheeky in front of my camera.
All three of us laughed and the moment was gone but captured on film as a record.

Many white Rhodesians, by the late 1970s, were fed up with the guerrilla war, and sanctions against them by the international community. Whilst there was a majority determined to "tough it out" come what may, there was also a significant number who had had enough and, correctly guessing that things were not going to end well, emigrated, creating a Rhodesian diaspora.
Naturally, those determined to stay looked unfavourably on those who, in their words, had "gapped it". This was derived from the fact that Salisbury (Harare) was about 500 miles from the border crossing point with South Africa at Beitbridge, also known as the Beitbridge Gap. Thus, those who left the country were said to have "done the Beitbridge 500", or "gapped it".
Some of the cartoons display a racist streak.
This book of satirical cartoons was designed to gently mock these "deserters" and remind them of their heritage and what they were leaving behind. Some cartoons also take swipes at America and Britain and other organisations on whom Rhodesians blamed their woes.
In 1980 it all came crashing down following Mugabe's landslide election after the British Commonwealth Ceasefire & Elections Monitoring Operation, known as Operation Agila. "Gapping it" was to become much more popular.
