There are many species in Costa Rica and I am not talking about hummingbirds. This is a bridge for so many species from all around the world, and many of them stay here.
You might find around 50 species of hummingbirds in Costa Rica. This is paradise for nature photographers.
Have you been to Costa Rica yet?
Magnificent Hummingbird
Eugenes fulgens
The admirable hummingbird or Talamanca hummingbird (Eugenes spectabilis) is a large hummingbird. Some taxonomic authorities, such as the International Ornithological Committee, split the magnificent hummingbird into two species, in which case the nominate fulgens is rename Rivoli's hummingbird, and spectabilis is named the admirable hummingbird. Other taxonomic authorities have not recognized the split. The admirable hummingbird's range is Costa Rica to Panama.
Change the name of the monotypic group Eugenes fulgens fulgens from Magnificent Hummingbird (Northern) to Magnificent Hummingbird (Rivoli’s).

The hummingbirds are active and are frequenting the feeders at my daughters house much more than those at my house. That is a good excuse to go visit my grandchildren regularly and get some action shots at the same time. This young male has taken ownership of one feeder and dominates it when others try to drink from it. Hilarious to watch!
The hummingbird fledges should be busy doing this sort of thing to build up their strength for a long journey south.

I finally had some quality time to sit outside and just enjoy nature doing it's thing. (which means that sitting out there in the heat and in the shade, I had one or two quality naps! LOL) I thought this Ruby Throated Hummingbird was a female but in one shot I saw a tiny speck of bright red on it's throat so it is probably a juvenile. This one and the adult male were constantly chasing each other around!
The hummingbirds continue to gracefully zoom and hover around the feeders and flowers.
Los colibríes continúan zumbando y cerniéndose elegantemente en el aire alrededor de los comederos y las flores.
Black-Bellied Hummingbird, Caribbean Cloud Forest, Costa Rica
The end of March is when we usually start to see the Rufous Hummingbirds migrating through our area on their way to breeding grounds further north. I spotted this male Rufous several days ago checking out all the feeders in our yard. Guess he liked what he found in the way of a temporary resting spot. He is now busy feeding and defending his favorite feeder from other intruders.
Selasphorus flammula
This tiny Volcano Hummingbird delighted us on the last morning of our October Costa Rica trip. This one is a female and spent lots of time at these beautiful purple flowers, it was impossible to resist taking lots of photos.

I don't like to photograph hummingbirds at the feeder but I liked the lighting on this bird. They didn't give me any other opportunities. Photographed this evening just before sundown. They landed within arms length after after I put my camera aside and after it was almost dark on a perch where I wanted to photograph them. Maybe another day. IMG_4265
I'm back and catching up! Can't wait to see all my Flickr friends new photos. We still have quite a few hummingbirds in our area.
Thanks so much for the faves and nice comments!
I couldn't resist the opportunity to try and capture a hummingbird in flight whilst in St Lucia. However with so many plants in bloom and the speed with which these small birds travel it wasn't easy. This shot taken early in the morning of a female Antillean Crested Hummingbird was the best I could manage.
Well my trip ended up being cancelled, instead I ended up in emergency surgery to have my appendics removed on Tuesday night, returned home yesterday...
These hummingbirds were at a friends, maybe 30 to 40 of them!!
Will visit as often as my energy level allows!
Female Ruby Throated Hummingbird taken from my flower garden. I have seen a few males but none have cooperated yet. Maybe I will get a male before the summers over. ( explore # 81 ) my thanks to everyone
