There are some photos that no matter what you see nor how hard you try, you just can't capture what you see. I am breaking my own rule and now seeing merit in some forms of editing photos. I am actively trialling HDR.
(High dynamic range imaging). Initially I thought it was cheating. Letting software do the job of the photographer. How wrong I am. You still need to line up the shot and you then need to balance the photo with software carefully. The shots take some skill to take and produce. This is one of my first HDR shots.
Taken with a Canon EOS 30d, 18-55 m lens on a tripod with remote shutter release. ISO 100, timer mode (10 sec) and Av mode with AEB (Bracketing) turned on.
This photo was then created with Photomatix. Using sRGB and Raw.
This photo has not been edited except for HDR conversion, default tone calculations and the watermark

Photo taken at the Rhino & Lion Nature Reserve in the "Cradle of Humankind" World Heritage site, near Johannesburg, South Africa.
While passing this rose on the sidewalk I realized that it would be unacceptable to fail to appreciate its existence and memorialize it eternally right here on the Internet. The rose, as it turns out, had a similar idea:
The rose said to me, "Throughout the history of the existence of roses on the Earth -- a very long history, not that roses should boast about such things -- there has never been an animal as impressive as humankind. For that reason the roses have decided to memorialize the existence of humankind so that future generations might remember that such an impressive animal existed."
I said to the rose, "Are you suggesting that humankind won't exist in the future?"
The rose answered, "Of course."
Then I wondered, "And you really are going to preserve a memory of humankind's existence?"
The rose answered, "No. Seriously, I was only joking. The Universe has decided that humankind was a mistake best forgotten and never repeated."
