Thomas Sankara (December 21, 1949 – October 15, 1987)

Thomas Sankara was born in Yako, Upper Volta (now Burkina Faso), into a humble family as the eldest of four children. His father worked for the postal service and was a local teacher, while his mother instilled values of discipline, honesty, and solidarity. From an early age, Sankara showed great curiosity, determination, and a sense of responsibility.

After completing his studies, he joined the military and attended the Military Academy, where he stood out for his discipline, intellectual abilities, and leadership skills. This military training prepared him to lead his country through challenging times and to undertake significant political and social responsibilities.

In 1983, Sankara led a revolutionary coup and became president of Burkina Faso. He identified as a socialist and pan-Africanist and implemented **radical and courageous reforms**, including:

- Nationalization of natural resources and fight against corruption

- Agrarian reform and mass literacy programs

- Promotion of women's rights and gender equality

- Economic independence and rejection of neocolonialism

His radical and independent policies provoked **strong opposition both internally and externally**, particularly from France and other Western powers concerned about his anti-imperialist stance and opposition to international economic interference.

On October 15, 1987, Sankara was **assassinated during a military coup** led by his former ally Blaise Compaoré, alongside other government members. His murder was a **political assassination**, motivated by his defense of national sovereignty, progressive programs, and refusal to submit to foreign interests and corrupt domestic elites.

Years later, official investigations and trials confirmed the involvement of foreign powers, particularly French intelligence services, with several of the conspirators arrested and convicted.

Thomas Sankara is remembered as the **"African Che Guevara"**, a symbol of **integrity, courage, independence, and social revolution**, continuing to inspire movements for social justice and freedom in Africa and around the world.

I publish this series of figures to awaken consciences and to remember how many people died defending truth, justice, and the rights of the oppressed. I want to highlight the injustices that still exist and show young people that the only thing we can do is to fight, because evil still rules and continues to target those who try to make a difference. This series is an invitation to remember, reflect, and never accept injustice.

The history of the region is complex and often misunderstood. At the time of the Roman occupation, shortly before the birth of Christ, Judea was a marginal province, bordering the Negev desert and separated from Gaza. Its size was limited, and Samaria, more central and vast, constituted a distinct region. This territorial configuration is documented in various historical sources.

Today, in 2025, we see the State of Israel showing its true face: a face that many still refuse to recognize. To remain silent would be complicity, it would be betraying the truth that Jews and Orthodox Christians have always told, the truth that we know and feel in our hearts.

This photo cries out what history and conscience demand we not forget: the pain of peoples, moral responsibility, the humanity that should guide us. This is not a light judgment, nor an empty word: it is the need to bear witness, to remember, to look squarely at what has been and what continues to be.

The image vividly captures the harsh reality of child labor in the Jharia coal mines. It depicts a young girl, covered in coal dust, standing amidst a smoky, barren landscape. Her weary expression underscores the grueling conditions she endures. Jharia, located in Jharkhand, India, is notorious for its dangerous and unregulated coal mining operations.

Children here face severe health risks, including chronic respiratory diseases from inhaling coal dust and smoke, and physical injuries from handling heavy loads and working in unstable conditions. Deprived of education, these children are trapped in a cycle of poverty.

Despite existing laws, enforcement remains weak in informal sectors. NGOs like Bachpan Bachao Andolan (BBA) and Save the Children work tirelessly to rescue and rehabilitate these children, providing education and support to their families. The image serves as a powerful reminder of the urgent need to eradicate child labor and ensure a safer, healthier future for these children.

In the heart of a brick kiln, where childhood is often buried under the weight of labor, a small group of children sit before a makeshift blackboard. Surrounded by stacks of bricks and smoke from the chimney, they cling to the fragile promise of education. This moment is not just a class—it is resistance, hope, and the dream of a future beyond the kiln.

Dear Colleagues,

On 8 October, Pakistan experienced its worst earthquake in 100 years. The earthquake devastated Balakot, my father's hometown, (the epicentre of the quake) and annihilated 90% of its buildings and infrastructure including the road along with many other towns. In my family alone, we lost 9 lives and several are struggling in hospitals with critical and often maiming injuries. It was only on Friday last week, after 6 days, that the road to the town was opened. Until then, severely injured people were being evacuated on foot by relatives and friends who had to walk for 6 to 7 hours each way to the useable road and take the bleeding victims to hospitals which were already overflowing. Helicoptors were too few and could only take the injured with extremely critical injuries.

Balakot, being a political backwater and located in a geographically difficult terrain, kept waiting for help for too many days. The rugged Himalayan terrain is making the rescue operations piecemeal and almost impossible in remote villages. The scale of devastation is such that the organisations working in Pakistan already are unable to cope with the logistics of meeting the needs of people in remote areas in a brutal race against time. The more people get involved on smaller scale the better as coordinating and staffing larger operations can be difficult in that region.

The most urgent need now is to save the survivors from disease and the imminent cold weather. Now the winter season has set in and more than two and a half million people are without a roof on their heads or medical help. There is an epidemic of gangrene (rotting of wounds) spreading quickly as million of injured people remain untreated due to a severe lack of anti-septic drugs. One doctor (Dr. Sahibzada) working around the clock without anaesthesia or drugs performed more than 1000 amputations in one day to save the lives of gangarene affected patients whose limbs were too infected to be saved. There is an urgent need for putting a shelter on the heads of those people. There is a desperate need for doctors and nurses and medical supplies.

Dear colleagues, if we, who are engaged in the noble profession of teaching, who live in Hong Kong - one of the financial centres of the world, who are blessed with relative peace, safety, wealth and ability to discern, do not extend a helping hand to the suffering humanity, who else will?

Doing our part

Among our own small family, we have put together our resources and sent one truck of food, 150 tents, 1,500 blankets and all the medical supplies one of my brother could procure from his 3 hospitals in the US. My two brothers have flown in from the US to help out. One brother being a doctor got together with my cousins in Pakistan and set up a camp near the grid station in Balakot together with two small local NGOs. They are trying to provide aid and medical help direclty to those helpless people who have lost almost everything they owned and very often most of their family members.

Now we are planning to help some families in the closest circle around us in the long term. Eight people (friends and family in the US, Pakistan and myself here) have joined hands and started work with the following goals:

To provide shelter (tents) as soon as possible to upto 20 families in Balakot and surrounding inaccessible areas on foot

To provide medical assistance to the same area to provide one more place for the injured to come for help (medicines, doctors and nurses)

If we can, plan long term rehabilitation of families and provide monthly assistance to affected families for one year

If you would like to contribute to the efforts of our group, you can contribute directly by contacting me. It is a matter of trust. We have already collected 12,500 US dollars from friends and family in the US. You can contribute to any organisation or to our group whichever way you feel comfortable. We are believers in person-to-person help and through local organisations whose administration and advertising cost are almost non-existant. We have already got a medical camp that constantly needs supplies even as I speak.

I would like to appeal my academic community in xxx to please open your hearts and donate as much as you can if you have not done so before through Humanity First USA (www.humanityfirst.org), a not-for-profit charity organization. For those who have been blessed enough to donate previously, I humbly request you to be even more generous than before. Your HK$400 will purchase one tent for a family of 4.

Pakistan needs 600,000 tents urgently. You can donate towards the purchase of a tent. Donate to Humanity First USA (www.humanityfirst.org) or Oxfam who are planning to supply 20,000 tents in the coming few days. www.oxfam.org.uk/what_we_do/emergencies/country/asian_qua....

I hope I can do my part in every way I can. I hope you can spread the word to your friends.

Thank you.

Chocolate cupcakes with royal icing snowflakes. Yes there might be no snow in Haiti but there was a huge snowstorm the day I made these!

Outside the UNHCR office, my protest is a bold stand against indifference. With a determined banner and clipboard, I’m calling for release from Greece’s hold.

Each morning, I face the chilling lack of empathy, symbolized by a simple food container. My message? Wake up compassion.

By sharing my story, using digital advocacy, and shining a light on dignity and solidarity, we’re pushing people, organizations, and philanthropists to embrace humanity.

Act Now, Save a Life Today, Every Meal Matters, Give €5+ for Food, Spread the Word, contact Reps for Resolution, Sign the Petition. Thank you for caring. 💪🙏

Over a decade of rigorous efforts to secure legal aid in Greece have uncovered “SolidarityNow’s” systematic neglect and obstruction, starkly contrasting their professed commitment to refugee assistance.

On December 28th, 2023, my visit accentuated institutional apathy, with critical communications persistently ignored and deliberately expunged, and procedural norms undermined via informal notes to evade accountability.

Aggressive behavior from visitors punctuated by xenophobic police threats, including “leave our country now and don’t come back,” culminated in my forceful expulsion compounding the issue. Additional visits in April 2024 evidenced continued obstruction as staff withheld information and enacted office lockdowns to avoid engagement.

Complicity from other NGOs, governmental entities, and the EU sustains this deeply entrenched anti-refugee agenda, reflecting a coordinated and pervasive war against refugees, reinforcing oppressive dynamics and perpetuating systemic xenophobia. 💔

We worked together on a donation for a fundraising dinner. There were 3 trays of chocolate cupcakes like this.

A few random and poor quality snaps of the Ahmadiyya Muslims' annual Jalsa Salana 2008.

The Ahmadiyya movement was founded by Mirza Ghulam Ahmad and is often heavily criticized as a cult. In particular the Sunni muslims who claim the Ahmadi muslims do not accept the Muhammed to be the final profit. This claim is false. Ahamdi muslims are severely persecuted in Pakistan which leads them to usually flee the country. Pakistan's government itself has declared the Ahmadi 'sect' of Islam as non muslims yet the one's giving birth to suicide bombers and organizing training camps through mosques as well as brain washing are the Sunni muslims themselves.

A determined group of protesters stand firm in Helsinki, raising signs that read “Stop Starving Gaza” while their voices echo through megaphones. The backdrop of Amnesty International flags and the quiet urban architecture highlights the contrast between the stillness of the city and the urgency of their message. Taken during the Ceasefire Now demonstration near the Israeli Embassy, this image reflects a peaceful but passionate cry for humanitarian access, protection of civilians, and the right to dignity. This moment both grounded and symbolic stands for those who choose to speak when silence feels unbearable.

During a stormy evening on December 1st, 2024, exhausted and hungry, weary from a sleepless, rain-drenched night, I remained steadfast with a tattered blanket outside the UNHCR office, a defender of hope amidst relentless challenges. ️

My pleas emblazoned on a banner and clipboard, I encountered a contemptuous man who, dismissive and scornful, hurled refuse rather than aid. 😡 Defiant, I recorded his sneer and retaliated, reflecting a world with a wavering moral compass, eroded of compassion in a society bereft of humanity.

Years of such hostility amplify my resolve to beckon empathy, urging €5+ donations for food and systemic change. ✊

Lined shoulder to shoulder, a diverse group of protesters raise bright yellow Amnesty signs reading “Stop Starving Gaza,” “Stop the Genocide,” and “Ceasefire Now!” in front of the Israeli Embassy in Helsinki. The cold winds of spring didn’t silence their cries — amplified through megaphones, scarves, and determination. This moment, captured at the Ceasefire Now demonstration, reflects the unity of people from many walks of life standing against war, starvation, and collective punishment. It’s a call for accountability, for human dignity, and for the world to pay attention.

🎥 Amid May and June’s brutal heat, my captivity protest outside the UNHCR office on the polluted pavement highlighted severe adversities and deteriorating conditions, characterized by profound neglect and unrelenting starvation, despite numerous pleas for nourishment, met with dismissive and hostile responses epitomizing sheer negligence.

Repeated incidents of anonymous motorcyclists or passing individuals discarding food under my blanket or near my banner during my slumber, aiming to demean and dehumanize, highlight an unsettling pattern of harassment, further degrading my fragile state.

Proximity to a bustling supermarket and eateries juxtaposed with the inaccessibility of essential nourishment revealed community apathy and the hypocrisy of humanitarian entities. This ongoing situation underscored societal savagery and the disconnect between humanitarian ideals and their executions, leaving me continuously hungry and isolated.

Daily struggles with heat, dust, inadequate support, and debris, exacerbated by a lack of necessary detergents and failed attempts to get UNHCR aid, intensified my plight. The aftermath of the April 23rd demolition, with street-side cold showers and manual washing of clothes, further underscored the lack of genuine support and highlighted the inadequacies of those meant to aid.

Your support remains crucial. Act now. 🙏 💔 🆘

📃The unauthorized demolition of my seventh shelter on April 23rd, 2024, by municipal authorities outside the UNHCR office, rooted in unsubstantiated complaints, not only unlawfully stripped me of essential items and basic human dignity but was also executed without a judicial mandate.

The Ombudsman’s July 9th response glaringly disregarded irrefutable evidence that negated pedestrian obstruction claims, leaning on misleading police and politically skewed UNHCR narratives, highlighting a severe abdication of duty to uphold justice and human rights.

This systemic failure trivializes my decade-long ordeal and perpetuates the denial of refugee rights, calling for urgent global solidarity and humane intervention to restore my dignity and freedom.

I had the honor of volunteering my time and photography services to Harper Haven, a local non-profit organization in the Lancaster area of the Antelope Valley, which provides support services for women and families through their outreach "Hello Beautiful"

It was time well spent being encouraged and inspired by the amazing work this organization is doing with zero funding but a lot of heart, compassion and respect.

Huge thanks to my friend Sterling for making me aware and asking me to help out. Much love and respect to Levy, the founder, who welcomed me and allowed me to be part of this awesome event she created and to see first hand the amazing work she does for others.

Crisis of Captivity: Urgent Call for Global Intervention 🌏

My urgent plea to the UNHCR’s Inspector General underscores my harrowing plight since my September 11th return to Athens. Over a decade of relentless political persecutions has led to unjust incarcerations, asset confiscations, and now life-threatening starvation—just two meals in three weeks.

Weaponized necessities—unsafe water, sanitation failures, dismissive responses—further aggravated this crisis. Immediate, substantial intervention is vital for restoring dignity and ensuring my survival, urging collaboration with Greek human rights bodies. My life hinges on UNHCR’s swift action to avert further concealed suffering and injustices. 🚨🙏
