RETOLD- Liverpool Biennial,RETOLD- Liverpool Biennial - M.USE (Arena House) 82 – 84 Duke Street

27 November – 05 December 2008.

Artworks created by 30 of the Biennial Volunteers are an extension of MADE UP as they respond to how the Biennial artists have explored the MADE UP theme by analysing and stripping down the concepts to create their own Retold versions.

Liverpool Biennial Volunteers are a passionate group of committed individuals who have withstood the elements to ensure Biennial artworks situated in the public realm or non-traditional gallery spaces are invigilated and always open for visitors to enjoy. But this is not their only interest as their passion for art and in particular MADE UP the Biennial’s International 08 exhibition has led them to curate a show of their own work within the festival. The resulting exhibition is Retold, an eclectic response to the works included in MADE UP. Retold will be shown at M.USE (Arena House) from 27 November – 3 December 2008.

The artworks created by 30 of the Biennial Volunteers are an extension of MADE UP as they respond to how the Biennial artists have explored the MADE UP theme by analysing and stripping down the concepts to create their own Retold versions.

This approach reflects the Volunteers’ daily exposure to the artwork in which the fantastical elements of MADE UP have become part of the everyday and as a result routine. As the Volunteers have interacted with visitors viewing the work in MADE UP for the first time, a fresh and new perspective was cultivated and the Volunteers developed a new appreciation of work they were invigilating.

Retold captures this process of disenchantment, engagement and renewed interest and highlights the complexities that constitute human experience, how we form relationships and how we function with our immediate environment

There will be an opening event on 26th November between 6pm and 9pm at M.USE (Arena House) 82-84 Duke Street Liverpool. The opening will include a programme of music and special one off performances.

"See What I'm Saying"

Directed and produced by

Hilari Scarl

"Deaf people can do anything but hear. But an all deaf rock band? An international deaf comic famous around the world but unknown to hearing people? A modern day Buster Keaton who teaches at Juilliard but is currently homeless? A hard of hearing singer who is considered "not deaf enough?"

SEE WHAT I'M SAYING follows the journeys of four extraordinary deaf entertainers over the course of a single year as their stories intertwine and culminate in some of the most important events of their lives: "
