Patrick Baty has worked at Hampton Court Palace for nearly twenty years.

When the Privy Garden of King William III was restored he was commissioned to research the colour of the paints that would have been applied on the wood- and ironwork. This included the famous Tijou Screen.

Went to the Wattle Festival in Hurstbridge yesterday. Parked up the Mid-Hurst end of Hurstbridge thinking the traffic would be easier. Got there late so it wasn't.

Fire station

First stop the new Fire station. Must admit I hadn't seen this before so popped inside to check out the kit. Got sized up by a large overall clad Koala. The overalls are clean meaning they have been re-certified and re-issued. Later on went past the old fire station down the road about 300m.

Krystal Square Off Blog

The cool and comfortable temperatures inside Lenox Square Mall proved to be very advantageous for competitive eater “Humble” Bob Shoudt on Sunday as he put away 41 Krystals and 5 Big Angus Burgers for a total of 66 Krystal Burger Points to take first place.

Shoudt is the first headline eater in the Krystal Square Off VI qualifying tour thus far to start with the Famous Krystal Burger and end with the Big Angus Burger. A risky strategy, but one that clearly paid off as he came in at only one point less than 2nd-ranked eater in the world Patrick Bertoletti’s 67 Krystal Burger count done at the Chattanooga Qualifier. It’s no doubt that Shoudt is in it to win this year’s Krystal Square Off VI World Hamburger Eating Championship.

The win in Atlanta guarantees Shoudt a seat at the final table in downtown Chattanooga on Sept. 27 next to fellow competitive eaters Joey Chestnut, Takeru Kobayashi and the KSO VI Qualifying winners to date: Patrick Bertoletti, Sonya “The Black Widow” Thomas, Hall “Hoover” Hunt and Eric “Badlands” Booker.

You can follow this story on my David Torke Photography FB.

I visited Knox Farm State Park recently and photographed the collapsing greenhouse complex near the abandoned stable complex.

The Knox Farm greenhouse was designed and built by the noted firm Lord & Burnham Company in 1927. This is the same firm that designed and built the Buffalo & Erie County Botanical Garden, Phipps Conservatory & Botanical Garden in Pittsburgh, New York Botanical Garden in Bronx NY, and the United States Botanical Garden in Washington DC.

I’ve been photographing abandoned heritage and industrial sites across the Rust Belt for the past 15 years. I never thought I’d be doing the same in my hometown of East Aurora NY. Here I always thought there was always a certain reverence and capacity for heritage stewardship. I guess it's time for some reflection and needed cultural reassessment.

In 2016 New York State determined that this greenhouse was eligible for the National Register. When a building or structure is determined to be eligible for the NR certain protections follow. One of those protections prevents the use of public funds for the demolition of the eligible structure. See this link for a 2016 list of the buildings and structures that have these protections at Knox Farm.

The last time I photographed the historic buildings at Knox Farm State Park - I learned that a number of the cottages, along Buffalo Road, were never included in that 2016 survey. So, I sent my photographs to the NYS Office of Historic Preservation. A few weeks later - based on my photos - the three cottages were then added to the list of Knox Farm properties that are determined to eligible for the National Register. Here’s that 11/2018 post.

I’ll follow up with additional photographs when the snow melts.

Please consider sharing this post with people in your FB networks who are interested in historic preservation and nice things. Thanks.

« Odors are perceived with every breath we take and immediately interpreted by the most ancestral parts of our brain. In recent years, researchers and practitioners, from the neurosciences to the humanities, have strived to gain a better understanding of the sense of smell, which deeply, yet often unknowingly, shapes the way we live: our eating habits, our social interactions, our emotions, memories, and even our well-being and safety. Albeit elusive and ephemeral in nature, scents may thus be purposefully used to improve many aspects of our lives. Furthermore, despite its long neglect in the West, smell can also carry cultural, aesthetic, and practical values, as exemplified by a number of ancient and foreign cultures.

In the hands of contemporary designers, whose job it is to consider the interactions of minds, bodies, and things, scents are mediated in innovative ways to raise a form of new sensory awareness. This exhibition will feature about 40 of these designers and artists from all over the world whose work reflects and participates in the growing culturalization of all things olfactory. Working with and around the sense of smell, taking into account its neurobiological, historical, social, and aesthetic specificities, these practitioners attempt to change the way we relate to and interact with the world. Their informed efforts are an incentive to use our nose to observe objects from a different point of view, and conversely to use objects to take advantage and make sense out of smell in novel ways.

The phrase ‘olfactory design’ can refer to a variety of practices that encompass, inter alia, fragrance making, olfactory marketing, stage design, architecture, and even urban planning. The focus of Living with scents will be on objects, not just scented products, but creative and artful interfaces to deliver scents with manifold design outcomes, from the hedonic to the functional. On display will be an unprecedented collection of useful, meaningful, and beautiful olfactory objects to be discovered through both the eyes and the nose. »

« An Exhibition Explores the Intersection of Scent and Design

After years of research into the design of the five senses, Elisabetta Pisu and Clara Muller have curated Living with Scents at San Francisco’s Museum of Craft and Design.

“Through the olfactory sense, we can interpret and learn about the world, fixing in our memory places [we’ve been] and the emotions we’ve lived,” says Elisabetta Pisu, design curator, founder, and project manager of EP Studio. While ephemeral, scents can dramatically shape the way humans live in and experience the built environment. “For this reason, ambient scent has become very important and constitutes an integral part of the research planning for many designers.”

After years of research into the “design of the five senses,” Pisu and olfaction scholar Clara Muller have curated Living with Scents, a new exhibition at San Francisco’s Museum of Craft and Design. Featuring the work of more than 40 international artists and designers, the exhibition examines the neurobiological, historical, social, and aesthetic implications of smell through objects. Works on view include a coffeepot 3D-printed from coffee grounds, a clock that releases a different essence every hour, and jewelry that provides a solution for those allergic to perfume. «

Today we celebrated my dads birthday.

Tomorrow he will become 70.

He is my superdad and I love him very much.

People say I am like him, and today I realized we did not have many pictures of us together.

For that and many more reasons he belongs in my 365, did I mention that I love him?

Breakthrough Research with Dogs

When a dog is in pain, it affects the whole family.

Watch this video to learn about the latest research on anti-aging for dogs.

Health conscious consumers today are confused and frustrated. Their email and Facebook pages are filled with outlandish hype and often outright lies. At the same time, they’re aware that spectacular advances are being made in preventive and regenerative health care.

In 2048, 11 million Americans (including Stephen) will celebrate their 100th birthday.

But we all will be somewhere in 30 years.

The question is whether you will arrive at 2048 with a strong fit body and a sharp, creative mind.

The Healthy Skeptics & My2048.com combines the academic and research experience of an internationally celebrated biochemist with the clinical insights of a double board certified physician specializing in anti-aging.

No Hype. No Webaloney

Stephen and Natalie are known as The Healthy Skeptics, and their educational site, TheHealthySkeptics.com, is devoted to showing consumers what to EXPLORE and what to IGNORE. Their Nutrition Detective course, taught at a UCLA extension course for nurses, has helped thousands of health seekers to separate the fads from the facts, and make truly informed choices.

There are only 24 hours in a day. If you waste your time following fads and fallacies, you are going to miss the true breakthroughs. Of course, you're also going to waste money. That's unfortunate, but not critical because you can always make more money. The real issue is time. You can't make more time. Thus My2048.com is devoted to giving you everything you need to know, and everything you need to do in order to achieve and maintain peak health in body and mind."

Stephen Cherniske and Dr. Natalie Kather are your Nutritional biochemist & M.D. Your personal biomedical team! Research, Experience and humor. Explore or Ignore!"

Stephen Cherniske, M.S.

A biochemist and former university instructor in Clinical Nutrition. He served on the faculty of the American College of Sports Medicine, advised members of the US Olympic team, and directed the nation’s first federally licensed clinical laboratory specializing in nutrition and immunology. A best-selling author with more than a million copies in print, Stephen has a remarkable gift for communicating breakthrough science that inspires, entertains and motivates.

Natalie Kather, M.D.

She received her medical degree from The University of Utah School of Medicine. She is board-certified in Family Medicine, as well as Anti-aging, with specialties in women’s health, hormone balancing and human performance.

Atenciosamente.

I made this as my wedding gift for one of my best friend's, Mia. It was made with LOTS of love (& fun when it went well), a fair amount of frustration & no real expertise & NO previous experience so please be aware that I can find lots to fault with this but I hope she's happy! First, let me tell you about my friend, Mia...

She's a VERY special friend. There's over 30 years difference in our ages but we clicked immediately, had long heartfelt conversations & never even noticed the age difference. We share many of the same values, interests & humour. She has a delightful innocence about her - not naive but a gentle GOOD heart. And both of us LOVE to sing but unlike me, Mia has a trained voice - a lovely high soprano - sings Celtic songs with a sweet lyrical beauty.

I got the date of her wedding all wrong (thought it was another week off) so had to do a bit of a rush job to finish her bridal hair comb in time. And stupid of me, I had no idea that the better quality seed beads (which I used) can still vary in hole diameter. So many of the tiny beads would not fit through 2 thicknesses of 26 gauge wire so had to be rejected.

I've never made something like this before. This was a learning experience as I went along. I took it apart a number of times, unhappy with results & finding that certain things didn't work the way I thought they would. I made it up as I went along - no pattern, no instructions. Next time I'll know what gauge wire to use & to find seed beads with larger more uniform holes. So while this may look okay, I'm sure I would do better next time. I'm only sorry that it was Mia's comb that I had to learn on.

Oh, & something else I found out. Metal hair combs (to hold your hair back) seems to be rare, if not non-existent around here! I phoned & phoned all over but couldn't find any. I ended up twisting wire & making my own comb to hold the hair design. Wish I had half-hard wire to do it with but only dead soft. Another lesson in frustration!

Sadly, I'll not able to be at her wedding as it's on the Island (Vancouver Is.) & would mean leaving Mozza without care for 3 days (he has hyperT & chronic renal failure so needs 24 hour care). Both of us love our kitties dearly so she totally understands. But another friend, who's a good photographer, will be taking lots of pictures so I can share in her happiness & special day!

Hands-On Nanofabrication Workshop for Educators - Pennsylvania State University, State College, PA

June 23-25, 2008

This photo set is taken by Ed Bujak (me) on Wednesday, June 25, 2008 with a

Nikon Coolpix S550 digital camera.

Photos with a yellow tint are the photolithography lab.

It turns out that all of the digital color models in wide use are often bad for figuring out which of any two colors are "nearest," according to humans.

Sometime in my web meanderings, I stumbled on information about the CIECAM02 color model (and space), including a Python library that uses it and a (gee-wow astonishing at what it can do with color) free Photoshop-compatible plugin that manipulates images in that space. If you do color adjustments on images using an application that's compatible with Photoshop plugins (a lot of programs are), go get and install that plugin now!

I wrote a Python script that uses that library to sort any list of RGB colors (expressed in hex) so that every color has the colors most similar to it next to it. (Figuring out an algorithm that does this broke my brain–I guess in a good way.) (I also wrote a bash script that runs it against all .hexplt files (a palette file format which is one RGB hex color per line) in a directory.)

The results are better than any other color sorting I've found, possibly better than what very perceptive humans could accomplish with complicated arrays of color.

Here's an image of Prismacolor marker colors, in the order that results from sorting by this script (the order is left to right, top to bottom) :

Prismacolor marker colors, sorted by nearest perceptual

For before/after comparison, here is an image from the same palette, but randomly sorted; the script can turn this ordering of the palette into the above much more contiguous-appearing:

Prismacolor marker set colors, random order

(It's astonishing, but it seems like any color in that palette looks good with any other color in it, despite that the palette comprises every basic hue, and many grays and some browns. They know what they are doing at Prismacolor. I got this palette from my cousin Daniel Bartholomew, who uses those colors in his art, which you may see over here and here.)

Some other palettes which I updated by sorting them with this script are on display in my GitHub repo with procedural art recipes.

Here is another before and after comparison of 250 randomly generated RGB colors sorted by this script. You might correctly guess from this that random color generation in the RGB space often produces horrible, garish arrays. This is where computer ways of doing things don't line up with human senses.

250 randomly generated RGB colors

250 randomly generated RGB colors, sorted in CIECAM02 color space

See how it has impressive runs of colors very near each other, including by tint or shade, and good compromises when colors aren't near, with colors that are perceptually further from everything at the end. Also notice that darker and lighter shades of the same hue tend to go in separate lighter/darker runs–with colors that well interpolate into those runs in between!–instead of having lights and darks in the same run, where the higher difference of tint/shade would introduce a discontiguous aspect.

Tangent: in RGB space, I tested a theory that a collection of colors which add (or subtract!) to gray will generally be a pleasing combination of colors–and found this to be often true. I would like to test this theory in the CIECAM02 color space. I'd also like to test the theory that colors randomly generated in the CIECAM02 space will generally be more pleasing alone and together (regardless of whether they were conceived as combining to form gray).

I really can't have those as the last images in this post. Here is a favorite palette.
