Zebulon Baird Vance (May 13, 1830-April 14, 1894) was a Confederate military officer, twice Governor of North Carolina, and U.S. Senator. He was one of the most influential Southern leaders of the Civil War and postbellum periods. This monument is dedicated to him and is located on sixth street (next to the Lynx Blue Line); it is at that location where his post-war home once stood (now a Holiday Inn parking deck).

El barrio histórico vuelve al siglo XIX un fin de semana al año en el mes de marzo: es la fiesta de La Reconquista, la celebración más emblemática de Vigo.
El 28 de marzo de 1809, un alzamiento popular logró expulsar a los franceses y convirtió a Vigo en la primera localidad de Europa que logró expulsar al ejército de Napoléon de una plaza conquistada. Tuvo su recompensa: un año después, Fernando VII otorgó a Vigo el título de ciudad “fiel, leal y valerosa”.
Ahora, cada 28 de marzo, durante 3 días, Vigo celebra su Reconquista: su zona histórica se convierte en un inmenso mercado del siglo XIX al aire libre, en el que en cualquier esquina te encuentras luchando a los franceses contra los vigueses. Gente caracterizada de soldados, pescadores y campesinos, las calles engalanadas de época… Es como un viaje al pasado.
Los mercaderes locales te venderán riquísimos manjares, desde nécoras y mejillones a empanadas o churrasco, acompañados de vinos de la tierra y licores tradicionales. Esta gran fiesta de Vigo continúa hasta bien avanzada la noche, con un ambiente callejero inmejorable.
Y si tras la Reconquista aún te quedas con ganas de fiesta en Vigo, el siguiente fin de semana Bouzas celebra la Brincadeira, que rememora la expulsión de los franceses de la antigua villa marinera.

The Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria (English: National Gallery of Umbria) the Italian national paintings collection of Umbria, housed in the Palazzo dei Priori, Perugia, in central Italy. Located on the upper floors of the Palazzo dei Priori, the exhibition spaces occupy two floors and the collection comprises the greatest representation of the Umbrian School of painting, ranging from the 13th to the 19th century, strongest in the fourteenth through sixteenth centuries. The collection is presented in 40 exhibition rooms in the Palazzo. On the second floor of the Gallery, there is an exhibition space for temporary collections, changed several times a year.
The collection's origins lie in the foundation of the Perugian Accademia del Disegno in the mid-16th century. The Academy was originally based in the Convento degli Olivetani at Montemorcino, where it began to assemble a collection of paintings and drawings. The town became part of the French department of Trasimène in 1798 and its religious houses were suppressed. This suppression was repeated by the united Kingdom of Italy from the 1860s onwards - both suppressions shifted a large number of paintings and artworks from church to state ownership.
In 1863, the civic paintings collection was formally named after Pietro Vannucci, but the problem of establishing an appropriate site to house the collection was not solved until 1878, when it moved into the third floor of the Palazzo dei Priori in the town centre. With the addition of acquisitions, donations and bequests, the pinacoteca became the Regia Galleria Vannucci in 1918, under the patronage of the king. The name was later changed to Galleria Nazionale dell'Umbria. Over the years the entire complex of Palazzo dei Priori has been repeatedly affected by renovations and functional adaptation. The museum path, inaugurated in its current form in 2006, occupies an area of 4000 square meters on two floors.

WE ARE ALL
Sinds de Brexit mag Europa dan wankelen, Phronesis zet daar een prachtig staaltje van continentale eenheid tegenover. De Deense contrabassist Jasper Høiby, de Britse pianist Ivo Neame en de Zweedse drummer Anton Eger bouwden samen aan een band die vooruitstrevende akoestische muziek maakt die helder en simpel klinkt, ondanks dat ze heel ingenieus in elkaar zit. Ze doen dat vanuit Londen, waar de band ruim tien jaar geleden ontstond uit het Loop Collective, een platform voor gelijkgestemde jonge jazzmusici.
Phronesis maakt internationaal furore met aanstekelijke thema’s, krachtige composities en prikkelende grooves. De composities bevatten veel ritmische lagen en ostinato-patronen. Hoiby zorgt samen met Eger voor een strakke, aanhoudende pulsering zodat de muziek wordt voortgestuwd. Eger is een vindingrijk slagwerker die stevig kan improviseren, allerlei ritmes aankan – ook uit de hiphopcultuur – en verrassende klappen uitdeelt. Ivo Neame tenslotte houdt van raadselachtige passages, maar laat ook graag zijn Herbie Hancock-achtige wendingen horen.
Phronesis’ album Alive (2010) werd door toonaangevende jazzmagazines uitgeroepen tot album van het jaar. In september 2018 bracht het trio zijn zevende album We Are All uit, wederom op Edition Records. Deze prachtige muziek komen ze vanavond in LantarenVenster presenteren. Voor de liefhebbers van inspirerende, creatieve jazz absoluut een mustsee!

A visit to Lacock Abbey, Fox Talbot Museum and Village in Wiltshire.
Lacock Abbey in the village of Lacock, Wiltshire, England, was founded in the early 13th century by Ela, Countess of Salisbury, as a nunnery of the Augustinian order. The abbey remained a nunnery until the suppression of Roman Catholic institutions in England in the 16th century; it was then sold to Sir William Sharington who converted the convent into a residence where he and his family lived. It was fortified and remained loyal to the crown during the English Civil War, but surrendered to the Parliamentary forces once Devizes had fallen in 1645.
The house was built over the old cloisters and its main rooms are on the first floor. It is a stone house with stone slated roofs, twisted chimney stacks and mullioned windows. Throughout the life of the building, many architectural alterations, additions, and renovations have occurred so that the house is a mish-mash of different periods and styles. The Tudor stable courtyard to the north of the house has retained many of its original features including the brewhouse and bakehouse.
The house later passed into the hands of the Talbot family, and during the 19th century was the residence of William Henry Fox Talbot. In 1835 he made what may be the earliest surviving photographic camera negative, an image of one of the windows.
In 1944 artist Matilda Theresa Talbot gave the house and the surrounding village of Lacock to the National Trust. The abbey houses the Fox Talbot Museum, devoted to the pioneering work of William Talbot in the field of photography. The Trust markets the abbey and village together as "Lacock Abbey, Fox Talbot Museum & Village". The abbey is a Grade I listed building, having been so designated on 20 December 1960.
