Hellevoetsluis - Fortresse Holland - Droogdok Jan Blanken

Droogdok Jan Blanken - the Dry dock Jan Blanken is a national monument built for the Dutch navy between 1798 and 1822 (architect Jan Blanken) in Hellevoetsluis for the construction and maintenance of ships. Equipped with new techniques such as a pump house (rebuilt in 2001, now a restaurant) with a James Watt steam engine and hundreds of piles were driven into the ground for the dock foundation. The dock has a ship door (type of lock, French invention), and devided in a maintenance and construction section, the walls of which are constructed as an amphitheater to facilitate easy ship maintenance. The naval frigate Euridice was the first ship to be docked.

After the departure of the Dutch Navy until 1970, in operation, completely restored in 2005, and now a museum with the still fully functioning dock for maintenance on ships.

Navigating the enormous ship in the historic naval harbor requires a lot of steering skills from the tugboats. Divers had previously inspected the passage through the lock near the bridge to ensure that there would be no obstruction to the ship due to the required draft.

It was very impressive for the spectators to see a ship of this size in the harbor. Something that happened much more often in the maritime past of this port when naval ships, but also the even more large historic sailing ships, still had Hellevoetsluis as their home port or were under maintenance in the dry dock..

The final destination for the armored ship iin this trip s located at the end of the former naval port "Haaven het Groote Dok". During the first period in Hellevoetsluis, the ship will be docked in the Jan Blanken Dry Dock.

This was not an easy maneuver because the pulling tugboat could now not go ahead without locking itself in the dock. The large ship was guided very slowly into the dock, which was extra difficult because it only just fit and of course the historic dock itself could not be damaged..

Equipped with an armament of a heavy ram on the bow, several guns and operated by a crew of 150 men.

The ships role was to defend the Dutch coast and later used as an accommodation ship. Nowadays it's a museum ship "Ramtoren schip Buffel" in Hellevoetsluis. Almost symbolically anchored in the "Maritime Quarter" of the "Fortresse Holland" museum in Hellevoetsluis. In a harbor area with various other historical ships and nearby structures all securely anchored in Dutch history for future generations. It's a location with many more national history facts being a important port and naval base for centuries.

Hellevoetsluis: Fortresse Holland - Documentairy Photography

Ramtower ship Buffel (Est. 1896) - a heavily armored ram ship in service of the Royal Navy until 1973 as "Hr.Ms. Buffel" or "Hr.Ms. Buffel" (NATO number A 884). Built in 1868 at the Napier & Sons shipyard of Glasgow. The first ship of the Royal Navy without sails, a large armored 2.198 ton ram ship with a steam engine and two propellers.

Strangely enough, I was the first and for a long time the only one this early morning, the first night of the HNLMS Buffel back in the dry dock and in Hellevoetsluis. It was still quiet on and around the historic dock, the armored ship looked grand and gigantic in the old dock. A unique moment, an almost 200-year-old dock and a hundred-year-old ship, which have even been contemporaries in the past.

A grand welcome back to Hellevoetsluis for the historic ship with a salute from the cannons on the harbor head and many spectators who can experience this historic event. The maritime historical past of Hellevoetsluis as a naval city is revived with a unique appearance, history seems to reunite again, the ship is back in its home port.

After the arrival of the armored ship HNLMS Buffel on October 5, 2013, it was docked in the aft dock of the historic Dry Dock Jan Blancen. Not because the ship needed immediate maintenance, but because the berth and the rest of the Koningskade were still under construction.

The sight of the armored ship HNLMS Buffel in the dry dock was of course very special to see. Contemporaries and old acquaintances of each other from a time when the Hellevoetste harbor was still a real naval port and also the predecessor of the current naval port in Den Helder.

October 5, 2013 - the Hr.Ms. Buffel towed from Rotterdam to Hellevoetsluis to be docked for a short period in the Drydock Jan Blanken before permanently moored in Hellevoetsluis

Ramtorenschip De Buffel (Est. 1896) - this ironclad ram ship was in service of the Royal Dutch Navy until 1973 as "Hr.Ms. Buffel" or "HNLMS Buffel" (NATO number A 884). The first ship of the Royal Dutch Navy without sails, a heavy armored ram ship using a steam engine and two propellers. Equiped with an armament of a ram on her bow, several guns, serviced by a crew of 150 men. Her main task was to play a role in the Dutch coastal defense, later in use as an accommodation ship. From February 7, 2015, the Buffel is permanent moored at the Koningskade, Maritime Quarter of Fortresse Holland together with the other historic ships such as the minesweeper Bernisse, the Lightship 12 de Noord-Hinder (1963) and of course the stone Dry Dock Jan Blanken from 1806 with pump house.

Originally the ship fitted with a steam engine, it must have been some noise and scent below decks.
