Published 1953. Another old scan hanging about the computer. The illustrations inside are sadly lacking in interest -- lots of intricate details of brooms and how to mend picture frames. But I love the cover! The checkerboard is the best!

Patterns include everything from dogs and ducks to detailed patterns. This is a rare find and is still in great shape
『ダーリンは外国人』(小栗,2010)などで表されているように日本では欧米系外国人のリアクションが比較的に、よく言えば豊か、悪く言えば大げさであると思われている。しかし、驚かれることに、海外（アメリカやフランス）では、日本人こそ大げさであると表されている。と同時に感情や反応を顔に表さないので、読みにくいと思われている。なぜこのような矛盾した印象がもたれているか？
たしかに、アジア人と言えば反応や「本当の感情」を顔に表さないというasians are inscrutableというステレオタイプが広くもたれている。一方、例えば『メジャーリーグ』の中で日本の野球選手を扮する石橋隆明の演技は大げさそのもの。フランス映画『ブランブルー』でも、日本のダイビング・チームが妙な走り方で登場し、お辞儀をして両手を合わせて話、ロボットの踊りみたいに場所を移動し、監督がうなずきをしながらダイバーを長らく励ましたえげくダイバーが酸素過剰で失心してしまう。シッドシーザーなど欧米人が日本人の真似をすると突然表情が大げさになる。しかし、一方、メジャーリーグでも石橋隆明が浮かべながらチームのオーナーを侮辱する（右下）シーンでは、日本人が感情を隠し人口的な笑いをするというステレオタイプも表現されている。
話しながら発信するジェスチャーについての先行研究を見れば、日米のインフォーマルな国際比較(Maynard, 1987, p602. 注4, Kita, 2009)では、日本人は欧米人の4倍もうなずきをする。欧米人もするように交代時や反応だけではなく、話の途中にもよくうなずきや地位さなお辞儀でも誠実さをアピールする。2つだけのユーチューブでの結婚式スピーチビデオを比較すると、たしかに手のジェスチャーが多いが、その分日本人の頷きな体感の動きが多い。お互いに「大げさ」に見えるのは、見慣れない異文化が目立ち、自文化は透明というという要因もあるであろう。
しかし、なぜ日本のジェスチャーが大げさでありながら、面をかぶっている(Craigie, 2004; Rice, 2004)かのように読みにくいとも解釈されているであろうか。『メジャーリーグ』での石橋隆明の名演技に戻ろう。例えば左上から、メジャーリーグの石橋隆明による日本人を風刺演技は、監督に指導されている偏見も含まれているが、日本人の特徴を拡大して表しているように思われる。黒人選手を批判するときに、石橋は着物を着ながらしかめっ面で接近し、怒鳴ったり、驚きを見せる。また同じ選手を批判している際に、相手を指差したりガッツポーズをしたり、英語が言えないからという理由ではあるが大げさに厚顔をジェスチャーで伝えたり、チームがないスプレーをすると大げさに喜ぶ。顔が動く回数はすくないが、歌舞伎俳優に似ているように、一つ一つ決まったポーズ・形を次々と演出する。さすが天才コメディアンで、ジェスチャーのすべてが洗練されて意図的である。
本ブログでは、日本人は自己を視覚的に表現するというのが原因になっていると主張してきた。この見解にもっとも近いのはバルトの『象徴の帝国』(Barthes, 1983)である。その中でバルトは、欧米人が自分自身を声で言語的に自己表現するのに対して、日本人の自己表現媒体は体全体を含めた様々な視覚的な記号である。バルトは視覚的な記号は言語に翻訳しなければ意識できる意味はない(1972, p113の図)と考えていたので、日本人の行動にはそのような言語約見つからないことから、日本の中心・自己は空虚であると考えていた。しかし、日本での異文化体験を渡欧して、自らが言語で何を表しているか、それも空虚ではないかとまで疑問をもっていたようであった(動著,p10)。
最後に、日本人が言語でお世辞や社交辞令（タテマエ）を言語的に表現しがら、表情・間・視線などの非言語的なコミュニケーションを表現することが多いから、Hall(1966）の「高文脈」「低文脈」の区別を問い詰める必要がある。言語を中心的に考えない文化はなぜ「高文脈」であるというのは、バルトにも見られたら、昔からの言語中心主義の表れに過ぎない。本音を伝えるジェスチャーを意識して、場合には押さえ、場合にはジェスチャーをもって場を盛り上げる日本では、言語こそ「文脈」だと考えられる。両文化を理解するために、いつもの欧米的言語優位主義から脱しなければならない。

Rare Singer Sewing Skills Book from 1955 and Project Material. There are (6) Six packages of Singer Fabrics for Student's Lessons # 1-6. Some of the materials have been used and some are completely un-used. There are some with darts, and shirring and scallops. that have been practiced on. I had already decided to name this shot "eyes" (not a very original idea, I know), when I noticed the geisha with one eye peeking out over on the left side. A little coincidence.
I use Canon Powershot G10. The book entitled Canon Powershot G10/G11: From Snapshots to Great Shots by Jeff Carlson has been published very recently. One of my photos taken by G10 has been selected for the book. Please allow me to show off the picture.

This image is from an acrylic painting "how to" book that we have put on the bathroom wall, along with some others from the same type of "how to" books. I've only been unclose to one lighthouse. It was closed on that Sunday morning so I did not get to take a tour. Maybe one day I can travel again and visit many lighthouses.
