Elmora School 12 hosted its annual Multicultural Show, ”One World, Many Stories” on Friday, June 5th. Parents and students in the audience danced and sang along with the performers on stage. Many standing ovations were given to the performers. Dances, poetry, and songs from all over the world were showcased. Teachers surprised the audience with a dance of many Medleys from all over the world.

The highlight of the show was the parade, where over 100 students walked into the Gym to the song “Coming to America.” Students and staff members walked in a line wearing native clothing from their country, waving the American Flag. It was an emotional and patriotic beginning. Students and parents were able to celebrate diversity, learn about other cultures, and pay tribute to this great country for educating so many children from all over the world!

Mariposa Pavoreal blanco / White Peacock Butterfly

The White Peacock butterfly (Anartia jatrophae) is a small-to-medium sized butterfly commonly found throughout the Dominican Republic and the wider Caribbean region. It is well-known for its graceful, erratic flight pattern and its preference for sunny, open, and moist habitats.

Appearance

* Coloration: The upperside of the wings is primarily white or cream-colored with light brown or tan markings and orange borders.

* Markings: It has distinguishing "peacock" eyespots: one round black spot on each forewing and two smaller black spots on each hindwing.

* Size: The wingspan typically ranges from 5.1 to 7 cm (2 to 2.75 inches).

* Seasonal Variation: The appearance can vary with the seasons; butterflies in the dry season (winter) tend to be larger and paler, while those in the wet season (summer) are smaller and darker.

Habitat and Behavior

* Range: The White Peacock is a resident species in the Dominican Republic and is found throughout the West Indies, Central America, Mexico, and the southeastern United States down to Argentina.

* Preferred Environment: It thrives in open, weedy areas, such as the edges of ponds, streams, shallow ditches, fields, and urban parks.

* Diet: Adult butterflies feed on nectar from various flowers, including shepherd's needle and frogfruit. The caterpillars feed on host plants in the Bacopa and Ruellia genera.

* Territoriality: Males are notably territorial, often perching in a specific area containing host plants and aggressively defending it from other insects and males.

The Anartia jatrophae (White Peacock butterfly) belongs to the family Nymphalidae. This family is commonly known as the brush-footed butterflies.
