A less than welcoming Grey Heron (Ardea cinerea) and a Great White Egret (Ardea alba) disputing fishing rights with an audience of Canada Geese at Arundel WWT. The egret prevailed.

Nikon 55mm f/2.8 NIKKOR Micro with PK-12 and 13 Extension tubes for a total of 41.5mm of extension, Single shot at f/22.
I took the previous milkweed shot at f/16 and thought the image quality was rather good; with that in mind, I took this shot at f/22. There was a bit less definition when compared to the same image shot at f/5.6 but not as bad as I thought and I liked the DoF that showed the little stalks coming out of the pod a bit better. BTW: I'm now aware that diffraction is a function of magnification, increasing as magnification increases. That's being said I still prefer this image over the others I shot.

Hostile, cold and silent. Not a man can you meet on a twisted path, no bird can be heard, not even a wind swooshing in the trees. The darkness creeps around, not caring about sunrise, and silence, deep and thick. What a world to explore!
A friend gave me a very small passionflower seedling...not realizing it's capacity to thrive, I planted it in the garden beneath one of the olive trees...by the end of the summer it had spread to three other trees and was strangling them all...thinking I would let it go until fall, I left it to fruit...dug it up the following spring and I am still pulling strangler seedlings out of the garden 10 years later! If only it had been Microsoft stock!

Our guide, a man calling himself Simon, met us at the railway station. He was hostile from the start and it was all down hill from there. I had foolishly expected a courteous and welcoming guide like our man in Beijing. Nothing could have been further from the truth,
Simon said our tour coach was too tall to fit under the awning at the train station, so we’d have to walk to the coach in a nearby car park. One glance at the high awning at the ultra modern Xi'an Railway Station had me expecting ours would be a double decker coach. The car park wasn't nearby, it was not near the train station, it was a hot day and ours was not a double decker coach.
When we reached the coach some people asked for water. Simon said it was in the luggage bay and he couldn’t get to it, we’d have to wait until we reached the hotel. Nobody died of thirst, but we expected courteous manners and good customer service, and he was giving us neither. As a tour guide he would have made a great prison officer.
We checked into the hotel and immediately were taken on a tour of the city's wall fortifications; I was beside myself with excited anticipation, at least we weren't going to some down market dive selling trash and tat.
The wall fortifications in Xi'an run for 14 Km, I took this shot from the walkway along the top of the wall. Mercifully Simon didn't take us on a jog around the fortifications, but he gave us a forensic history lesson that seemed to go on for ever. This after we had climbed up the 70 steep steps to reach the top of the wall where we stood and listened when a few shaded seats might have eased the experience. As it was, if the climb up the steps didn't kill us, Simon would bore us to death, or the air pollution, I mean dense mist, would very likely get us. Well, we all have to die from something.

Canada is a hostile country for elephants. There is plenty to eat here; people love animals, so that's not the reason. The Elephants (known then as Mammoths) all emigrated to warmer climates of Africa, Thailand or India about 5000 years ago. The Mom's name is Tembo and it is modeled after San Diego Zoo resident. Tembo was used to be a Hollywood actor before retiring to a Zoo. Derrick Hudson completed the sculpture in 2002 commissioned by Lou Odette. Commerce court with all the offices did not see much pedestrian traffic in last 2 years, so the elephants bring some kind of life into the large square. Tembo died relatively young in 2019. The life style of Hollywood stars can be demanding.
