An abandoned hornets nest.

Thanks to Cheryl Dunlop Molin and ~~Chuck's~~Photos~~ for correcting me. This is a hornets nest not a bird nest.

Ruby-throated Hummingbird was sitting bravely while this big hornet was intimidating it for a second or two. It did not take much for the Hummingbird to scare him off ;) !

Hornet (Vespa crabro)

I noticed a few Hornets feeding on sap running from an old Oak tree. I returned later and drizzled some honey on the bark to keep them in one area to photograph them.

Another from Saturday

Catcott heath

A pleasant enough afternoons jolly on Catcott heath with Steve Balcombe. The weather was making it hard work... Cloud, sun, cloud, sun, cloud, rain, sun... You get the idea.

A few bugs about, getting them to time their appearance with the sunshine was a little problematic... Still, a few made the effort. We had to make a dash to Tower hide at one point, as it looked like a good soaking was imminent, only to find the hide full of hornets... Well, when I say full, there were three in there, but it's a small hide...

This little lady was out on the heath and stayed still just long enough for me to shove the camera in her face and bag a couple of shots. I do love hornets, give me one over a common wasp any day. :@)

This beast is the uk's largest hoverfly at around 2cm long that's a big old fly - Norfolk

Shot with the 645 A*600mm f/5.6 plus 1.4x teleconvertor. This is a composite to lower the position of the moon in the sky.

Hope you like it.

Wild, golden crabapples (Malus 'Golden Hornet') at the edge of an old, nearby farm just as the sun was setting this evening. This was an absolutely perfect Fall day - almost 80F with cloudless blue skies. By the end of the week we're supposed to have November-like weather and temperatures 30 degrees colder. But that's days away, so let's just think about this day which was exquisite. :)
