Photo Title: Edina Mboje learns her Sight Will be Restored
Submitted by: Joe Raffanti
Category: Professional
Country: United States
Organisation: Seva Foundation
COVID-19 Photo: No
Photo Caption: Edina Mboje ran a restaurant in her remote village in central Tanzania until her vision was clouded by cataract. Her husband and son helped out as much as they could, but eventually they had to shut down the restaurant, leaving Edina at home during the day while her husband worked in the fields and her son walked to school in a nearby town. This photo was taken at the moment that Edina was told by a visiting ophthalmologist that her condition was treatable, and that she would have her sight restored the following day at the nearby hospital. Edina\'s surgery was successful, and she has since returned to her village where she is helping her husband in the field, assisting her son with his studies, and preparing to reopen the family restaurant business.

Funded by various charitable organizations, BMIS is the only blind school in Dhaka, a city of 14 million people, which offers room and board to blind girls from poor families irrespective of caste, creed or religion. Sasha faces a long road ahead, for even with higher education, less than 1% of educated blind girls will find a job in Bangladesh.

Photo Title: Barefoot Doctors- Living on the Edge
Submitted by: Sheikh Md. Alamgir Kabir
Category: Amateur
Country: Bangladesh
Organisation: Gonoshasthaya Kendra
COVID-19 Photo: No
Photo Caption: It was September 5, 2012. Photo showing two medical interns Dr. Md Zohirul Alam and Dr. Raihan Al Mamun of Gonoshasthaya Samaj Vittik Medical College Hospital, Bangladesh. Gonoshasthaya Kendra (GK)* had just initiated Specialized Health Camps (SHCs)* in several hard-to-reach areas of Bangladesh. Two interns were accompanied by other members of a medical team.
It had rained on that day, and we all were heading towards a Sub-center of GK to organize a Specialized Ophthalmology Camp at Delduar, Tangail, from GK HQ at Savar. On our way to reach the destination, we saw a bamboo bridge spanning a large lake! Yes, “a bamboo bridge,” the only way to cross that wide lake! We had to walk carefully over the rickety bridge balancing with surgical instrument drums in hands. This photo was captured while Dr. Alam and Dr. Mamun were halfway, and it was a great relief once we all crossed it. Besides, it was even more rewarding to see the smile on the face of people in that rural area whom we got the opportunity to provide ophthalmologic care that they do not have access to often.
This photo symbolizes not only the importance of our work but also the dedication and sincerity towards our responsibilities. It also exhibits what still needs to be done to ensure the accessibility of quality health care for all.
Date: September 5, 2012
Place: Delduar, Tangail, Bangladesh
Photo by Sheikh Md. Alamgir Kabir (2012)
*Gonoshasthaya Kendra (GK) is a registered Public Charitable Trust. Established in 1972, it is one of the oldest non-governmental, non-profit, and national level organizations in Bangladesh.
*Specialized Health Camps (SHCs): A combination of primary, secondary, and tertiary level health care services provided by Gonoshasthaya Kendra (GK) staff periodically in remote locations of Bangladesh. Since 2011, GK has been arranging Specialized Health Camps (SHCs) to treat patients outside the clinic and hospital settings, in various hard-to-reach areas where health care services are very limited. GK provides services in the domains of medicine, general surgery, orthopedics, cardiology, gynecology, pediatrics, ophthalmology, ENT, dentistry, dermatology, and physiotherapy. These camps are also reinforced by various laboratory tests and diagnostic tools such as EKG and ultrasonography, a temporary laboratory settlement, or GK’s Sub-center-based facilities. SHCs are conducted in two ways: 1. Base-camp: This provides integrated medical services for major and minor surgeries during the camp’s duration (2-10 days); 2. Outside the base-camp: Which incorporates medical services including regular check-ups and pre-operative assessments with referral to the base-camp.

Submitted by: Alland Dharmawan

COVID-19 Photo: No
Photo Caption: Romli is a 7-year-old boy from Tangerang, Indonesia. He was diagnosed with cataract when he was only two months old. He’s the only son of the family. His parents do not have any eye problems. His dad is a farmer and his mom works at home as a housewife. When Romli came to our eye camp in Serang, his mom was always beside him. Whenever she looked at him, she just couldn’t hold her tears. When he first came, his vision was 1/60, 1/60. He barely could see anything. This photo was taken when Romli was waiting outside the operating theater. His mom went in with him, praying and hoping for the best. The surgery went smoothly, and when his eye cap was removed, he could recognize his mom right away! Romli now can see a bright future ahead of him!

Yara al-Hasbani was putting the finishing touches to her make-up for a performance of \"Romeo and Juliet\" in Damascus when she found out her father had been tortured to death. His body was returned to the family 23 days after he was arrested by Syrian authorities, and when she began receiving threats herself, she knew she couldn\'t stay in Damascus. Hasbani, her mother and two siblings came to France three years ago after they were granted refugee visas in Europe. First arrived in Rochefort, a scenic port town in the southwest of France, she moved to Paris in 2016, a city where she found it difficult to settle at first. But her first visit to the famous Palais Garnier theatre opened the emotional floodgates and made her create the performance \"Unstoppable,\" a 12-minute solo retracing her journey to exile. Her dance may be silent, she said once, but she\'ll carry on \"raising her voice so people don\'t forget.\" Sameer Al-DOUMY / AFP
