The Sundarbans is a mangrove area in the delta formed by the confluence of the Ganges, Brahmaputra and Meghna Rivers in the Bay of Bengal. It spans from the Hooghly River in India's state of West Bengal to the Baleswar River in Bangladesh. It comprises closed and open mangrove forests, agriculturally used land, mudflats and barren land, and is intersected by multiple tidal streams and channels.

Kolkata, formerly Calcutta, is featured in this optical image, captured by the Copernicus Sentinel-2 mission.

Zoom in to explore this image at its full 10 m resolution or click on the circles to learn more about the features in it.

Kolkata, visible in grey in the centre of the image, is one of India’s largest cities with over 14 million inhabitants. Part of the neighbouring country Bangladesh is also visible in the right.

Kolkata lies on the Hooghly River, which can be seen cutting through the city. The different shades of brown and blue in the water are likely due to the high concentration of sediments. Vast agricultural and aquaculture fields can also be seen, including rice fields and fish ponds, which are distinguishable by their rectangular shapes and the presence of water, particularly in the right side of the image.

The Sundarbans National Park is visible in dark green in the bottom right corner. This protected national reserve, a designated UNESCO World Heritage Site, is home to Bengal tigers and hosts a vast mangrove forest.

Copernicus Sentinel-2 is a two-satellite mission designed to map differences in land cover to understand Earth’s landscape, as well as monitor changes over time. As cities continue to expand, Sentinel-2 can also be used to improve urban and rural planning.

People take a morning dip at one of the ancient ghats on the River Hooghly in Kolkata. When I looked at this shot I felt the scene would not have changed much from the time( over 300 years back)when Kolkata or Calcutta developed into a city from the three villages of Kalikata,Sutanuti and Gobindpur and went on to become the capital of British India and one of the most important cities of the British Empire outside England.Only the green plastic bottle hanging from the tree strikes an incongruous note.:-)

Kolkata, 2017

Shot of a Boatman Who was ready for his next sail at Dusk in Hooghly River From DakshinKali Temple Ghat,Kolkata

Final color shots from Kolkata. If you're wondering how I could possibly stretch out photos from a 6-week trip back in 2014 into a verrrry slow posting schedule over 7 months in 2016, it's due to significant processing damage by my lab that needed to be fixed. Something I have little patience/motivation for. Nearing the end of India photos now :).
