Starting mid July until end September between Wellington, Franschhoek, Paarl and Stellenbosch the veld is abunded with arum lilies. These lilies are indigenous to this area and picking them are prohibited. But during this time one will find hawkers selling the lilies to motorists driving between these towns. Selling all kinds of things is sometimes their only income.

On one of our trips from Stellenbosch to Wellington I saw a bucket full of these lilies standing at a crossing. The bucket was unattended by any seller and I experienced a very melancholic and sad emotion, which was the inspiration for this painting.
