With the Nottingham city skyline dominating the scene from almost 3 miles away, DBS Tug 60001, hauling the 2.30pm Humber Oil Refinery - Kingsbury loaded oil tanks (6M00), inches slowly around the curve at Lenton knowing she will be stood waiting for a path at the signal gantry I used to frame the shot.
It was a stinking hot day and I'd spent most of it at the family home shifting furniture and getting it ready for my Dad to live safely downstairs, given his increasingly poor health. Knowing I was going to be spending another couple of days over there, and frankly worn out myself, I decided to finish around 4.15pm and take a leisurely walk to what's known locally as Boots Bridge, but officially passes by the name Humber Road South, from where I took this shot. I initially posted an image of the train taken much closer in, but this different composition and viewpoint always appealed.
For anyone interested in the skyline, the dominant light coloured building at left is the Victoria Centre Apartment block rising to 22 storeys high. It boasts a rail connection too being built on the site of the old Nottingham Victoria Station. The building immediately above the Tug is Hart's Hotel on Park Row - I speak from experience (in another life) when saying the rooms on the top floor offer a fine and airy view over the western aspect of the city, although sad to say the railway is only heard and not seen.

Shifting home is one of the most disastrous experiences one can have in Dhaka city. Because of the necessity to carry Literally all the stuffs, there are chances of things getting lost or damaged.
And those things are costly. So, the penalty is pretty high.
Landslides and soil shifting are common in Astoria. Lot lines become meaningless and homes shift destroying their foundations in the process. If you are on level soil, along the river, it is fill. However, the views can be beautiful. Is it worth it? It is if you are in an area with stable soil. One development here had a home slide downhill onto the HS playing field. Yes, we have problems with greed.
This home may be vacant, uninhabitable because of sliding.

Bob Narev was born in Eschwege, Germany in 1935. The following year his father was dismissed from his high school position because he was Jewish and therefore considered unsuitable to teach non-Jewish students, so the family moved to Frankfurt.
Bob’s formative years there were marked by several compulsory home shifts as the Nazis clamped down all matters Jewish. He recalls enduring taunts as he and his parents walked the streets with the obligatory Judenstern (Jewish star) stitched on their clothes.
They were arrested and sent to Theresienstadt (Terezin), Czechoslovakia, in August 1942. At the time Bob was just six years old. Upon arrival at the train station his father was asked whether he had any money on him. He said no. The guards patted him down and discovered a coin in one of his pockets and the young Bob remembers seeing his father being beaten until his nose bled.
Bob’s father died in Theresienstadt. Bob and his mother, Gertrud, remained there for two-and-a-half years until February 1945, after which they were offered the chance to get on a train, destination unknown. Gertrud was, understandably, reticent to get on a train, but the enthusiasm of her (by then) nine year old son to go on a train journey won her over.
The train journey was a rescue mission arranged by Vaad-Ha-Hatzala, a group of Orthodox Jews in the USA which had originally been set up to assist the escape of rabbinical scholars and students. In early 1944, this purpose was broadened to assist any Jewish people living under German rule. Following negotiations conducted by Swiss politician Jean-Marie Musy on the Vaad's behalf with top Nazi leaders, and substantial payments having been made, a train left the Theresienstadt camp on the night of February 6 1945 with 1,210 inmates on board, bound for Switzerland. Fortunately, Mrs Narev and young Bob were on that train. The rest of their immediate family were to perish in the Holocaust.
Bob and Gertrud emigrated to New Zealand in 1947 after Gertrud’s niece, herself only a teenager, successfully lobbied authorities here. Gertrud, who had been a soprano had studied music at the Frankfurt Conser¬vatorium. She performed in a number of operatic roles at the Frankfurt Opera until Jews were prohibited from working there. With this background she managed to get work here teaching music after a stint at the Heard’s chocolate factory. They shortened their surname from Narewczewitz to Narev for simplicity, and Bob went on to study law and arts, showing scholarly aptitude before going on to become one of Auckland’s most successful and prominent commercial lawyers at city firm, Glaister Ennor.
Bob is a member of the New Zealand Order of Merit and serves on a number of Holocaust charitable trusts. He is past president of the Auckland District Society of Notaries and served as President of Auckland Hebrew Congregation, Chair¬man of United Synagogues of NZ, and President of both the Auckland Zionist Society and the Zionist Council of New Zealand as well as being a trustee of the Christian Healthcare Trust, the Home and Family Trust and the Dental Research Foundation Trust. Bob was also made an Officer of the New Zealand Order of Merit for services to community and education in the 2020 New Years Honours.
Bob and his wife Freda, also a survivor, are actively involved in Holocaust education. Bob has chaired the Holocaust and Antisemitism Foundation Aotearoa NZ Trust since 2012.

Not only the circumstance of light were terrible on the other side of the second wall were squatters make a home shift, a life in poverty in the wake of a train, the sun doesn't shine everywhere.
This home shifted on its foundation but remained in the owner's yard. San traps are now the only remaining hazard.
So after overeating last night, I had indigestion induced insomnia. Finally got to sleep maybe at 5 AM? 4+ hours later, I awoke and zombied through my morning routine. Ate breakfast at noon then biked to the local watering hole to watch Michigan earn their first trip to the Final Four since I went there.Then bright & early, at 1:30, off on my morning ride. 12 miles on newly inflated tires (that's MUCH better), then 4 times up & down Baldwin Hills Scenic Overlook-- 250 feet straight up a staircase of varying height, then 3/4 mile jog back down. So I headed home.
Speeding down the hill at 30mph, maybe 35mph, maybe 40. Dunno exactly. No problem, gentle curves, a few pedestrians and few cars. Then I spied a bus heading up the hill, and my brain went on vacation. I could have easily continued at my speed or tapped the brakes and no problem. Instead, I decided to be "prudent" and braked way too hard. Immediately, the bike started fishtailing. The bus slow I released the brakes and tried to regain my balance, but it was too late. I went down, and went down hard. Never had a bike wreck like that before, high speed & slow motion, if you know what I mean.
I slammed into the ground solid, and slid a good bit. Banged my hip, knee, bike handles. The passer-bys asked if I was OK. I don't remember EXACTLY what my response was, but I'm pretty sure it involved me swearing loudly, picking up my bike and threatening to toss. And a lot of yelling. I definitely wasn't OK, but nothing was broken. Right elbow didn't rebrake. Ribs didn't crack. Knee seemed to have held up better than it has during simple tip & fall incidents. Left shoulder properly located.
Oh hell, I was cut & scraped up the wazoo, with blood streaming down each hand, each elbow, and each knee. And it hurt. As I tried to decide which friend to call for a ride home, I took stock of the bike. Much like its rider, it was bruised but unbroken. Handlebar out of whack, but that was repaired before I got home. Shifters a bit smashed, but functional.
So yeah, I lucked out today. Were the bus driver less aware, he likely wouldn't have slowed and I could have either slammed into or under it. More likely I would have stayed in my own lane and bailed a lot sooner (and harder). The bike absorbed just enough of the impact to spare my bones, which weren't even tested. And as much as my skin hates me, that slide was what I needed.
I'll be bloodied up for a week or two, and I'll be happy not to touch any bike for the next 3 (took the digger on the hybrid, not the expensive road bike, another plus).
But I'll count my blessing and count myself among the lucky today.

December 2014 - Kenema District, Sierra Leone: Ebola survivor and traditional healer Abu Bakarr Sheku shares his story with the #ISurvivedEbola campaign. Abu Bakarr contracted Ebola in July 2014 during a traditional healing session with a female patient. At the time, Abu Bakarr was unaware that the woman was carrying the virus, and she tragically died. Abu Bakarr later realized she may have had Ebola, and immediately sought specialized care when he experienced similar symptoms. After testing positive for Ebola, he was admitted to the Kenema Government Hospital, where he recovered within 25 days. Post-recovery, Abu Bakarr faced a hurdle of social and professional alienation. As an herbalist and the sole provider for his wife and three-year-old son, the stigma threatened his family and his practice. After explaining to his community that he no longer had the virus and should not be avoided or harassed, the communal attitudes that previously jeopardized his home shifted. Abu Bakarr now encourages fellow herbalists to take precautions and report any suspected cases to Ebola Treatment Centers.
