Add turmeric to dishes -

Turmeric, the yellow spice common in Indian dishes, contains a chemical called curcumin that may help to reduce arthritis pain. The secret is its anti-inflammatory properties.

Because ginger contains chemicals that work similarly to some anti–inflammatory medications, the benefits of ginger for arthritis pain are not surprising. Get creative: grate fresh ginger into stir fries, steep ginger with tea, or bake healthy ginger muffins.

Thank you everyone for your visits, faves, and kind comments❤️

To relieve headache pain, dab a drop or two of thyme or rosemary essential oil on each temple and on your forehead. Rub gently into the skin, then sit quietly for several minutes to let these natural headache remedies work. In a 2010 study, researchers discovered that thyme and rosemary oils contain carvacrol, a substance that acts as a COX-II inhibitor, much like nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs, such as ibuprofen, do.. Amazing how effective aloe vera is for soothing burns and promoting healing of burns. Mother nature gives us a hint to aloe's status for healing burns when it blooms these lovely, firey orange blossoms. The original image was a daylight shot of this plant growing in a canyon near my home.

I find this book extremely informative.

Down the centuries the folk have had cures for all kinds of ailments. Some good, some bad and some were downright bizarre! This cure surely falls into the bizarre category. The title on the image in the Library is The Bishops Skull used to cure whooping cough.. Whooping cough was a terrible disease among children and most distressing for the parents and families of the tots who suffered and oftentimes died. What can we find out about the Bishop and where is his skull now?

Skin is the most visible and the most important part of your body. So, if you want to look good and beautiful, taking care of your skin is extremely important. In order to ensure that you always look fresh, lively and gorgeous, it is important that you adopt a regular skin care regime. This routine will keep your skin protected and prevent any major skin troubles. However, no matter how much you take care, there could be times when your skin does get affected with some very common skin related issues. These skin problems aren’t too big to be worried about – you simply need to understand them and take quick, corrective action.

Every woman is obsessed about her skin – some may be too obsessed while others are less. Skin is the biggest organ of your body and is also the biggest indicator of your beauty. Skin is also very prone to show the effects of weather changes. While there isn’t much you can do to prevent the bad impact of seasonal changes on your skin, there are still ways that will help you in keeping your skin in its best form. Here are some of the very common skin problems and how you can deal with them.

The 4 common skin problems

Redness

Redness

The basic cause of redness on your skin is over exposure to the sun’s UV rays. Constant exposure to sun causes your skin’s capillaries to burst and this is visible as the redness. Also, as you age your skin becomes thinner making the blood vessels underneath it more prominently visible. Rosacea is a skin condition that causes redness too. This is a chronic condition that involves the inflammation of the blood vessels under the skin. This redness comes and goes when the skin is exposed to sun, heat or stress.

Topical products that contain sulphur and azelaic acid are good to treat redness caused by rosacea. For the general redness, using a sunscreen before stepping out in sun will help a lot.

Sun damage and lines

Sun damage and lines

As you age, the production of collagen and elastin gets reduced in your body. This directly impacts the elasticity of your skin. The result of this is the appearance of fine lines (read wrinkles) on your face. Over exposure to sun causes an increase in the number of pigment production cells in your skin and this causes the dark spots.

To take care of the fine lines, products that contain retinol build up collagen will help. For pigmentation, bleaching creams that contain about 2% hydroquinone or kojic acid are helpful.

Allergic and irritated skin

Allergic and irritated skin

Eczema and dermatitis are common skin problems that are caused due to allergic reactions. Over the counter drugs and creams are helpful in dealing with most allergic reactions on skin. Hydrocortisone creams are good and drugs like ciclosporin can help in dealing with these skin conditions.

Bumps, lumps and growths

Another common issue with your skin is the appearance of some kinds of growths. One thing that you can be rest assured about is that not all growths are problematic. The most common types of growths are seborrheic keratoses, which are harmless black or brown growths that usually crop up as your skin ages. Warts are other common form of skin growths. These growths are usually painless so you don’t need any medications to treat them but if you want to remove them, you will have to visit a dermatologist.

Problems related to skin can be visually more disturbing than causing you pain. When you face these issues, try to stay calm and look for appropriate solutions as mentioned above.

This photograph was taken in Craters of the Moons NP/NM. I took this photo while on top of a blown out cinder cone. This plant community in this area is in a lithosere seral stage of plant succession. The plants have al adapted and grown up in a desert that is also covered in old lava flows. This particular plant species is a wild onion (Allium validum). The wild onion is edible and has herbal/medicinal properties useful for insect repellent.

Leah’s backyard bug bite balm recipe.

This herbal infusion has worked wonders for us to quickly relieve itchy bug bites or stings and it’s all-natural! There’s a good chance the ingredients for this recipe are already in your backyard and kitchen, too.

Recipe:

1 cup dried and finely chopped broadleaf plantain leaves (magic anti-itch ingredient, astringent, anti inflammatory, promotes skin cell healing)

3 tbsp dried oregano ( numbing agent, anti microbial, anti bacterial, anti inflammatory)

2 tbsp cayenne powder (pain reliever, closes wounds)

1 tbsp turmeric powder ( anti inflammatory, antibacterial, anti fungal, antiviral, mild anesthetic)

1 tbsp dried rosemary ( anti bacterial, mild pain reliever/numbing agent)

1 tbsp dried basil (anti bacterial/anti inflammatory)

Coconut oil (Or olive oil or other carrier oil)

Optional: beeswax for making a salve.

Melt enough carrier oil in a pot to just cover the herbs. Keep on very low heat for at least 2-4 hours. Stir every so often. Once cool enough, strain oil through cheesecloth or coffee filter to remove herbs. Oil will take on the color, smell, and properties of the herbs. Repeat process with a new batch of dried plantain and the same oil to make it more potent, if need be. If adding beeswax, return oil to pot and melt in wax to achieve desired hardness. Keep infused oils refrigerated or in a cool dark place. Salves can be more portable. Salves and infused oils are usually good for about a year.
