My aunt described a backseat dog seatbelt to me that sounded easy to create and more functional than the bungees we've been using to keep the dog from climbing into the front seat. So I made one.
This DIY design uses scraps of stuff I had around the house: nylon webbing straps and buckle cut off an old backpack, a random D-ring, and a fairly well-worn carrabiner. The webbing was really easy to sew (lots of holes in it) and then melt down onto itself.
The strap loops through itself using the D-ring, and the ordinary middle seatbelt of the car goes through that loop and buckles like normal. This means the dog will be attached to a regular seatbelt at the base. The carrabiner clips onto her collar. She'll have enough length to move around comfortably, but not enough room to hop over the seats. The added snap-release in the middle, which is there only because the pieces I had included it, will provide a quick-release mechanism and will also let us snap the restraint onto the dog's collar before she gets into the car and has her head collar taken off.
I expect it will work brilliantly, but it hasn't been tested yet...
