Before I attended the annual Grass Valley Fly-In and Open House last month held at Nevada County Airport I had never seen outside of Oshkosh Wisconsin of amateur-built aircraft or "homebuilts" because they are typically built in people's garages and basements. There were many many homebuilts at the open house, so I got to see them up close first-hand. This image is of a Hatz CB-1 that was on display at the airport that day. Technically the Wright Brothers 1903 Wright Flyer was a homebuilt & the Wright Brothers homebuilders because Orville and Wilbur didn’t depend on a factory to build their planes, successful and unsuccessful. So homebuilding has been a practice since the early days of American aviation and in 1953 the Experimental Amateur-Built Aircraft or EAA organization was born. Lucky to have found another nest in the garden. This female (I think?) has been busy plastering up the entrance. The male has been scraping bark from an adjacent oak and bringing that to the nest too. I will keep you posted on progress.

I went to the Homebuilding and Renovating Show at the NEC and this lady was working on one of the stands, she posed but when I quickly moved to shoot something else she jokingly said I had missed my window of opportunity. But I think I got a better shot.
