Set on a tidal islet on Loch laich (Argyll and bute)

A shrine even to Romanticists Roslin Chapel achieved world renown by the Da Vinci Code which claimed it to hold the Holy Grail and thus making a once private medieval chapel the centre of absolute legend.

Castle Stalker is a four storey medieval tower house standing on a small rocky tidal islet known as Rock of the Cormorants, in the mouth of Loch Laich in Scotland.

Castle Stalker is featured in Monty Python and the Holy Grail as Castle Aaarrgghh

When l saw this shot it reminded me of the "Monty Python's Holy Grail sketch with the French in the Castle...So please be careful while passing "You English types." and watch out for flying Cows,Horses, Ducks, Chickens. etc etc. :-)

Castle Stalker is a picturesque medieval tower house built in the 14th century, situated on a tidal islet in Loch Laich, Scotland, and is known for being the "Castle of Arrrgh" in Monty Python and the Holy Grail.

Most of Valencia Cathedral was built between the 13th century and the 15th century, and this style was mainly Gothic. However, its construction went on for centuries. As a consequence there is a mixture of artistic styles, ranging from the early Romanesque, Valencian Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical.

At the bottom right is a model of the outstanding Catedral de Santa María, which was originally a mosque. There were also descriptions in Braille for the blind (top centre). A walk around the building was really worthwhile, as it always presented itself differently. The covered bridge that connects the cathedral with the neighbouring building also caught my eye, but cannot be seen on the small model.

The Holy Grail inside (thanks Rudi for your photo of it !) can be seen in the centre of the collage.

At the bottom left is a picture of a child Jesus dressed in gold. In March, when the Fallas festival takes place every year, a 14 metre high wooden framework of the Holy Virgin is put up in the square in front of the cathedral. During a solemn ceremony, it is decorated with flowers given by the Falleras (‘Valencian women in traditional costume’)

Kind of in a rut with these sunset/ river shots. Taken looking north at the Decatur Boat Harbor at sunset. ND 4 and polarizer filter with three long exposures photomatix. I literally had to quit because my hands were so cold they were painful.

Meteora is a place wellknown for its bizzare landscape and the monasteries perched on top of some conglomerate rock pillars. The place is also well known among the rock climbing enthusiasts, since fifty years. All the rock pillars have names like the HolyGrail, the Bell, the HolySpirit or the GuardOfHolySpirit and many others. The rock that first gave shelter to the monks is named Doupiani. Doupiani. The same rock hosts most of the climbing routes nowadays.

One hot summer afternoon, after completing a three pitch climbing route in Doupiani, two friends with their teen sons, four persons in total were standing on top of Doupiani. After spending some good hour on top, the small team headed to the abseiling point.

On the photo is my son, just before sunset, playing carelessly with the sheaves on the top of the rock. Needless to say that the last person abseiled down with the dim light that remained in the sky.

The Metropolitan Cathedral-Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady of Valencia alternatively known as Saint Mary's Cathedral or Valencia Cathedral, is a roman catholic parish church in Valencia, Spain.

Founded in the 13th century on the site of a mosque, the unusual Valencia Cathedral incorporates a number of architectural styles and artistic treasures - including the Holy Grail!

Rosslyn Chapel, also known as the Collegiate Chapel of Saint Matthew, is a 15th-century Episcopal chapel located in the village of Roslin in Midlothian, Scotland. The chapel was founded by William Sinclair, 1st Earl of Caithness with a ground-breaking ceremony in 1456. After the Scottish Reformation in 1560, it was largely abandoned but, following a visit by Queen Victoria, it was rededicated in 1862. It was the target of a bombing in 1914 during the suffragette bombing and arson campaign. The interior contains some fine carvings which many historians have sought to interpret. Since the late 1980s, the chapel has been the subject of speculative theories concerning a connection with the Knights Templar and the Holy Grail, and Freemasonry. It was prominently featured in this role in Dan Brown's bestselling novel The Da Vinci Code (2003) and its 2006 film adaptation.

Today I found myself at Castle Stalker, also known as Castle Aaaargh. It was a shame it was such a wet day!

(Scottish Gaelic: Caisteal an Stalcaire) is a four-story tower house or keep picturesquely set on a tidal islet on Loch Laich, an inlet off Loch Linnhe.

-

It is about 1.5 miles (2.4 km) north-east of Port Appin, Argyll, Scotland, and is visible from the A828 road about midway between Oban and Glen Coe.

-

The islet is accessible (with difficulty) from the shore at low tide. The name "Stalker" comes from the Gaelic Stalcaire, meaning "hunter" or "falconer".

-

The castle was brought to fame by the Monty Python team, appearing in their film Monty Python and the Holy Grail. It appears in the final scene as "The Castle of Aaaaarrrrrrggghhh".

Gabriel Charles Dante Rossetti, generally known as Dante Gabriel Rossetti, was an English poet, illustrator, painter, and translator, and member of the Rossetti family. He founded the Pre-Raphaelite Brotherhood in 1848 with William Holman Hunt and John Everett Millais. Rossetti was later to be the main inspiration for a second generation of artists and writers influenced by the movement, most notably William Morris and Edward Burne-Jones. His work also influenced the European Symbolists and was a major precursor of the Aesthetic movement. Rossetti's art was characterised by its sensuality and its medieval revivalism.

Setting

The island castle's picturesque appearance, with its bewitching island setting against a dramatic backdrop of mountains, has made it a favourite subject for postcards and calendars, and something of a cliché image of Scottish Highland scenery. Castle Stalker is entirely authentic; it is one of the best-preserved medieval tower-houses surviving in western Scotland. It forms part of the Lynn of Lorn National Scenic Area, one of forty in Scotland

History

The original castle was a small fort, built around 1320 by Clan MacDougall who were then Lords of Lorn. Around 1388 the Stewarts took over the Lordship of Lorn, and it is believed that they built the castle in its present form around the 1440s. The Stewart's relative King James IV of Scotland visited the castle, and a drunken bet around 1620 resulted in the castle passing to Clan Campbell. After changing hands between these clans a couple of times, the Campbells finally abandoned the castle in about 1840, when it lost its roof. In 1908 the castle was bought by Charles Stewart of Achara, who carried out basic conservation work. In 1965 Lt. Col. D. R. Stewart Allward acquired the castle and over about ten years fully restored it. Castle Stalker remains in private ownership and is open to the public at selected times during the summer.

For the 2011 census the island on which the castle stands was classified by the National Records of Scotland as an inhabited island that "had no usual residents at the time of either the 2001 or 2011 censuses."

"Valencia Cathedral, at greater length the Metropolitan Cathedral–Basilica of the Assumption of Our Lady of Valencia (Spanish: Iglesia Catedral-Basílica Metropolitana de la Asunción de Nuestra Señora de Valencia, Valencian: Església Catedral-Basílica Metropolitana de l'Assumpció de la Mare de Déu de València), also known as St Mary's Cathedral, is a Roman Catholic church in Valencia, Spain.

The cathedral was consecrated in 1238 by the first bishop of Valencia after the Reconquista, Pere d'Albalat, Archbishop of Tarragona, and was dedicated to Saint Mary by order of James I the Conqueror. It was built over the site of the former Visigothic cathedral, which under the Moors had been turned into a mosque. Valencian Gothic is the predominant architectural style of the cathedral, although it also contains Romanesque, French Gothic, Renaissance, Baroque and Neoclassical elements.

The cathedral contains numerous 15th-century paintings, some by local artists (such as Jacomart), others by artists from Rome engaged by the Valencian Pope Alexander VI who, when still a cardinal, made the request to elevate the Valencian See to the rank of metropolitan see, a category granted by Pope Innocent VIII in 1492.

A purported Holy Chalice, believed by many to be the true Holy Grail, is kept in one of the cathedral's chapels." (Wikipedia)

Templar Knight Lost

In a garden lost, a Templar knight wandered.

Long ago, he had lost his sword.

He had searched for centuries but could not find the Christ he sought.

In this garden, he searched for answers,

For the truth of dead men rising and angels who flew in the skies.

But all he found were shadows.

And all the bad things his virtue had done.

The Scottish castle where The Holy grail and the TV show Outlander was filmed

This is a general view of the “Exaltation of the Holy Cross” abbey’s southern wall in its entirety. Shot almost into the fierce sun (setting to the left), in late July.

The south choir is wider than the two apses surrounding it. St. Michael the Archangel is carved in bas-relied high up (just beneath the choir’s dome). Below the choir’s roof one sees the series of Saints’ figures carved in bas-relief, too (below the cross-shaped window of the choir: St. George slaying the dragon, St. Helen, the Holy Cross, St. Constantine and St. Dēmētrius).

A secondary or auxiliary side door (directly leading to the nave, thus bypassing the narthex or lite) is viewed to the left of the westernmost vaulted apse of the south wall. The holy grail is carved in bas-relied above that door. There are bells hanging from the domes’ crosses.

One of the sanctuary’s three apses is barely discernible, on the right (sanctuaries are always the easternmost parts of Christian churches).

The Exaltation of the Holy Cross Abbey (aka “Monastery”) is a vaulted three-aisled basilica of a singular architectural style all of its own, measuring 72.8 × 43.3 ft (22.2 × 13.2 m without apses and choirs). The church is defined by its thirteen domes and still stands within a picturesque fir-trees’ forest at an altitude (elevation) of 3,609 ft (1,100 m) with interesting fauna in it (bears, wolves, vipers etc.). It took eight years for the construction to be completed. The abbey was built in c.1770 or 1792. It is located between two villages—Dholianá and Kraniá. Both villages are in the greater area of Aspropótamos (Greek for “White River,” toponym of river Acheloos) in Trikala county, Greece.

Major repairs were reported in 1839–1848 and in 1982–1985. The latter was necessary after the severe damages caused by the Nazi Germans during the occupation in WWII. The Exaltation of the Holy Cross is dependent on St. Stephen’s monastery (Meteora).

The most remarquable thing of this picture is that there are no people around!

This is the famous pewter tankard featured in the Thirsty Traveler television show. Filled with a bottle fermented sparkling ale from Coopers Brewery in Adelaide; Australia. Shot (and sampled from) at a beer tasting evening presented by Kevin at Fynn's of Temple Bar on King Street East on April 27-2009. The food and the paired beers were wonderful and Kevin is a great host.
