Peace Symbol

The symbol now known internationally as the "peace symbol" or "peace sign", was created in 1958 as a symbol for Britain's campaign for nuclear disarmament. It went on to be widely adopted in the American anti-war movement in the 1960s and was re-interpreted as generically representing world peace. It was also used by activists opposing nuclear power in the 1980s,[citation needed] although the Smiling Sun image () ["Nuclear power? No thanks!]" predominated.

Origin

The symbol was designed by Gerald Holtom (1914–1985), who presented it to Direct Action Committee on 21 February 1958. It was "immediately accepted" as a symbol for the movement and used for a march from Trafalgar Square, London, to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston in Berkshire on 4 April. Holtom's design was adapted by Eric Austen (1922–1999) to ceramic lapel badges. The original design is in the Peace Museum in Bradford, England.

The symbol is a super-imposition of the flag semaphore for the characters "N" and "D", taken to stand for "nuclear disarmament". This observation was made as early as 5 April 1958 in the Manchester Guardian. In addition to this primary genesis, Holtom additionally cited as inspiration Francisco

Goya's painting The Third of May 1808 :

I was in despair. Deep despair. I drew myself: the representative of an individual in despair, with hands palm outstretched outwards and downwards in the manner of Goya's peasant before the firing squad. I formalised the drawing into a line and put a circle round it.

Ken Kolsbun, a correspondent of Holtom's, says that the designer came to regret the symbolism of despair, as he felt that peace was something to be celebrated and wanted the symbol to be inverted. Eric Austen is said to have "discovered that the 'gesture of despair' motif had long been associated with 'the death of man', and the circle with 'the unborn child'".

The symbol became the badge of the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, and wearing it became a sign of support for the campaign that argued for British unilateral nuclear disarmament. An account of CND's early history described the image as "a visual adhesive to bind the [Aldermaston] March and later the whole Campaign together ... probably the most powerful, memorable and adaptable image ever designed for a secular cause".

The peace logo -- three simple lines within a circle -- turned 50 on 4 April 2008.

It was designed by Gerald Holtom as "The Nuclear Disarmament logo" for the first Aldermaston March, organized by the Direct Action Committee against Nuclear War, Easter 1958 (4-7 April).

The logo was not copyrighted, and was available for use by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, also founded in 1958; it later became known in the wider world as a general-purpose peace symbol.

The design was a combination of letters of the flag semaphore alphabet for "D" and "N", standing for nuclear disarmament.

These two children are making the peace sign without necessarily knowing the full history behind this symbol. Created in 1958 by Gerald Holtom for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, this gesture represents the letters “N” and “D” in semaphore code, enclosed in a circle symbolizing the Earth. Holtom, a committed pacifist, wanted to convey a message of hope in the face of the nuclear threat.

Today, children wear this sign with innocence and joy, still spreading a beautiful positive energy …

Today we commemorate a life. That sounds much nicer than the truth.

When your house is on fire, what do you grab? When it was Windsor Castle, Andy rushed in and grabbed a couple of carpets, a painting or two… He sought to save the day but still left Betty with her now famous annus horribilis. When it was my turn, I rounded up the hounds, the insurance certificate, and this bust of JS (Pappa) Bach. Some of this is true.

All previous attempts to eliminate humanity had failed. Oppenheimer's deadly toy changed that game. The notion of Mutual Assured Destruction — MAD — became a thing. This roused a few passions and folks made visible their preference for nuclear disarmament. They needed to signal their disapproval of the whole extinction thing.

Remember this: ☮ ? Now popularly known as the peace sign, it began "life" in 1958 as a symbol for nuclear disarmament — ban the bomb was another term.

This symbolism is attributed to the English artist Gerald Holtom. Variously, it is a graphic representation of the combined semaphore positions for "N" and "D", or a poetic mishmash of this and that. Handily, it matches the semaphore positions making it plausible that some of this is also true.

Thirty nine years ago today, Gerald Holtom died, and a little over forty five years ago my house didn't burn down. But it was close. The house was saved, and so was Bach. It's odd how a crisis brings out true passions.

Tirei essa foto hoje mesmo. Gostei muito de tudo nela. O foco, o bokeh, as cores, etc. :)

Fique sabendo mais sobre o símbolo:

CND (Code of Nuclear Disarmament) ou Símbolo da Paz;

The peace sign, a universally recognized symbol, consists of a circle with a vertical line in the center and two downward-sloping lines on either side, forming an inverted 'V'. This design was created in 1958 by British graphic artist Gerald Holtom for the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War in the UK, later adopted by the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), which is why it's also known as the CND symbol. Holtom intentionally embedded two key meanings within the design. The first is a political message: the internal lines are a superposition of the flag semaphore signals for the letters 'N' and 'D', standing for "Nuclear Disarmament." The surrounding circle represents the Earth, signifying global unity for the cause.

The second meaning of the symbol is a more personal and emotional one. Holtom explained that the inverted 'V' also represents a person in "deep despair," with hands outstretched and palms downwards, a figure of resignation in the face of nuclear annihilation. This image was reportedly inspired by Francisco Goya's painting, The Third of May 1808, although the peasant in that painting has his hands raised. Despite this initial connotation of despair, Holtom later regretted the negative association and suggested the sign be inverted to represent the semaphore for 'U' (for "Unilateral Disarmament") or the "tree of life," a symbol of hope. Regardless of the multiple interpretations, the symbol’s debut occurred on the first major anti-nuclear march from London to the Atomic Weapons Research Establishment at Aldermaston over the Easter weekend in 1958.

The symbol quickly transcended its original anti-nuclear focus to become a general international peace sign. In the early 1960s, it traveled to the United States, where it was adopted by civil rights activists and later became a powerful emblem for the broader anti-war movement, particularly during the Vietnam War. Because Holtom deliberately chose not to copyright the design, it became freely available for all to use, contributing to its rapid spread across the globe and its enduring presence in counter-culture, fashion, and social justice movements. To this day, the CND symbol remains one of the world's most simple, powerful, and widely understood symbols of peace and protest.

In the 1950s the "peace sign", as it is known today, was designed by Gerald Holtom as the logo for the British Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament, a group at the forefront of the peace movement in the UK, and adopted by anti-war and counterculture activists in the US and elsewhere.

The logo commonly recognized as the “peace sign” since the late ‘50s supposedly began as the logo for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND). According to the CND, it was designed in 1958 by an English professional artist/designer named Gerald Holtom, who had graduated from the Royal College of Arts. Holtom, a conscientious objector who had preferred working on a Norfolk farm during WWII instead of joining the conflict, incorporated the hand-held flag symbols (semaphores) for N and D into his logo, the N standing for “nuclear” and the D for “disarmament.” In semaphore, the letter N is formed by a person holding two flags in an upside-down V, and the letter D is formed by holding one flag pointed straight up and the other pointed straight down. By superimposing the flag orientation of these two letters, the bars of the peace sign were derived.

Holtom presented his design to officials in the Peace News office in London and to the Direct Action Committee Against Nuclear War. The Direct Action Committee was already planning its first major anti-nuclear march from London to Aldermaston, where British nuclear weapons were manufactured. Bertrand Russell, an organizer of this march, selected the symbol to be placed on buttons and banners for the march. The "peace sign" made its first public appearance in the U.K. on that march over the 1958 Easter weekend. Holtom originally had intended to use the cross symbol within a circle as the logo for the march but various clergy he consulted about the idea were obviously not enthusiastic about using the cross on a protest banner. Holtom described the use of the downward V to represent the despair that he felt due to nuclear proliferation. He later reportedly regretted his choice, rather preferring an upward V, which he felt would express the joy of peace. He requested that the upward V peace sign be placed on his tomb, but this request was not heeded.

The symbol was brought to the U.S. by Bayard Rustin, a U.S. civil rights protester, who had participated in the Aldermaston march. The peace sign was first used in the United States later in the same year when a pacifist protestor, Albert Bigelow, sailed his small boat near a scheduled U.S. nuclear test site displaying the CND banner. It was later used on civil rights marches and appeared at anti-Vietnam War demonstrations.

The peace symbol, this symbol means NO WAR

This symbol called CRC (Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament) became popular in the 60s and 70s after being used by the Hippie movement, against the Vietnam War.

It was designed by British artist Gerald Holtom in 1958, commissioned by opponents of nuclear war.

Supposedly the alphabet used military traffic light signs with flags. The letters are N (for Nuclear) and D (for Disarmament). But it's just a theory.

This symbol is the link to another symbol of peace, white dove. The lines represent the pigeon's leg and circle the Earth. Thus, it symbolizes world peace.

But there are many versions of the true meaning of this emblem, which hark back to ancient times. It says it was created millions of years ago, and that its meaning is death. Moreover, it is said that in inverted sense is the tree of life also it is related to Nero as the "Cross of Nero".

The truth is that this symbol is or is not misused, is now globally recognized and used as the symbol of peace.

Dewsbury Town Hall is a Victorian town hall that stands in front of the old marketplace in the centre of Dewsbury, West Yorkshire, England. It is a Grade II listed building.

The site chosen for the town hall had previously been occupied by a hotel, a forge, a blacksmith and some other small businesses. The foundation stone was laid by the Thomas Bateman Fox JP, mayor of Dewsbury, on 12 October 1886. The building was designed by local architects Henry Holtom and George Arthur Fox. The clock in the tower, which was financed by a gift from Alderman Mark Oldroyd, a later mayor, was supplied by William Potts and Son of Leeds and installed on 2 April 1889. The building itself was built by Chadwick & Sons at a cost of £40,000 and was officially opened by Alderman John Walker JP, the next mayor, on 17 September 1889.

King George V and Queen Mary visited the town hall in July 1912 and returned in early 1918 to thank the people of Dewsbury for their efforts during the First World War.

In 1928, Charles Brook Crawshaw, a local colliery proprietor, left a collection of important paintings to the town hall including "Joshua Commanding the Sun to Stand Still upon Gibeon", painted by John Martin in 1848, and "Stocks Closed Firmly with an Upward Tendency", painted by William Strutt in 1889. During the Second World War a bomb fell close to the town hall killing five residents and blowing out one of the stained glass windows in the building.

In January 1981, Peter Sutcliffe, the "Yorkshire Ripper", was held in the cells in the town hall following his arrest and he then appeared in the magistrates' court there. The magistrates' court in the town hall closed in the late 1980s.

More recently the building has been used in various television productions including the BBC series Spanish Flu: The Forgotten Fallen in August 2009, the ITV series Emmerdale in July 2011, the ITV series Eternal Law in May 2011 and the BBC series Love, Lies and Records in March 2017.

Took a day out to work on my painting. I've been on an emotional rollercoaster ride for a while, so I needed to take it out in some way, and this is the result. Feels good to paint again. I still have a long way to go with it.

Credit goes to the photographer: Julian Andrew Holtom who's image I am painting from.

Morley Town Hall is a municipal facility with a clock tower in Morley, West Yorkshire, England. It is a Grade I listed building.

Previously the local board of health in Morley had met in a room in a building in Queen Street. After the town secured borough status in 1885, the first Mayor of Morley, Joseph Schofield, ran a design competition for a new town hall: there were 73 entries submitted. The competition was won by Henry Holtom and George Arthur Fox from Dewsbury with a Neoclassical style design. The foundation stone was laid by Tom Clough, the then Mayor of Morley, on 8 October 1892. The building cost over £41,000 to build and featured a colonnade with a Roman frieze on the pediment and a dome which is 160 feet high. A clock, known as the "Sam Rhodes Clock" and named after Councillor Sam Rhodes, the chairman of the Town Hall Committee, was installed in April 1895. The building was officially opened by H. H. Asquith MP (who had been born in Morley) on 16 October 1895.

Ellen Mary Rope painted three tall bas-reliefs ("Faith", "Hope" and "Charity"), high up above the dais in the Alexandra Hall in autumn 1895.

Queen Elizabeth II, accompanied by the Duke of Edinburgh, visited the building and had coffee with the civic leaders on 28 October 1954.

On the morning of 18 August 1961, a fire broke out in the nearby Albert Mills which, before demolition, were used for storing paper. As the mill burned, sparks and burning paper were blown against the dome of the town hall and set alight its timber construction. Within two hours the dome was destroyed and the clock put out of action. Restoration was completed on 14 December 1962. The town hall was the headquarters of the Municipal Borough of Morley but it ceased to be the local seat of government when the enlarged Leeds City Council was formed in 1974.

The town hall has been the venue for various concerts and films: the Grimethorpe Colliery Band recorded one of their "Brass From The Masters" albums in the town hall in 1999 and the ITV show Emmerdale used the town hall for both interior and exterior shots in spring 2007.

Paz e Amor...

The International Day of Peace occurs annually on 21 September.

The internationally recognized symbol for peace was originally designed for the British nuclear disarmament movement by Gerald Holtom in 1958.

The CND symbol, now known universally as a 'peace symbol' was designed by Gerald Holtom in 1958, the year in which the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament was launched by Bertrand Russell and other British intellectuals. Its shape is based on the semaphore signals for the letters N and D (for Nuclear Disarmament). The design of the logo was never copyrighted, leading to its widespread reuse and adoption. CND became a mass movement during the late 1950s and early 1960s, with annual mass marches from the UK's weapons research establishment in Aldermaston to London. Support waned later in the 1960s, when opposition to the Vietnam War became the focus of left-wing organisation.

The heyday of the Student Peace Union (SPU) was between 1959 and 1963 when a nuclear test ban treaty was signed between the Soviet Union and the U.S.

The SPU led numerous campus meetings, rallies and demonstrations against nuclear testing during that period.

The group spearheaded national demonstrations in Washington, D.C. in November 1961. A second “Washington Action” drew 5,000 to the city in February 1962 in a protest sponsored by Committee for a Sane Nuclear Policy (SANE), A tiny Students for a Democratic Society (SDS) and the SPU.

In October 1962 during the Cuban Missile Crisis, the group spearheaded a demonstration of about 2,000 students in Washington, D.C. against the burgeoning confrontation that appeared to be leading to nuclear war.

During its peak in 1963, the group had about 3,500 members on dozens of campuses nationwide.

The signing of a partial nuclear test ban treaty in 1963 caused the group to lose focus and its leadership fell victim to factional struggles between the so-called Shachmanites (who advocated some type of “third way” between the U.S. and the Soviet Union) and another leftist tendency that called for a labor party.

The group dissolved in 1964, but was resurrected as a smaller group based on smaller college campuses while SDS took off on the larger campuses. The new SPU ultimately merged with the campus Americans for Democratic Action to form the Independent Student Union in 1967.

Its brief existence on the activism stage was marked by its spearheading campus activism against nuclear testing and nuclear war and for popularizing in the U.S. the peace symbol.

The peace symbol was designed in 1958 by British artist Gerald Holtom for the Campaign for Nuclear Disarmament (CND), which was having its first major march in England. Holtom explained that the symbol superimposed the semaphore letters “N” and “D” over each other. The SPU spread the symbol across U.S. campuses.

The button depicted above is likely from its second incarnation of the group.
