Having the privilege of being one of the official photographers for the Hoboken International Film Festival, I got to meet & photograph many of the lovely & talented stars of television & the big screen including comedian & actor Gilbert Gottfried.
James Dean loved racing cars and he and his brand-new, $7000 Porsche Spyder convertible were on their way to a race in Salinas, 90 miles south of San Francisco. At 5:45 PM on September 30, 1955, the 24-year-old actor was killed when the Porsche hit a Ford Tudor sedan at an intersection in Cholame, California. The driver of the other car, 23-year-old California Polytechnic State University student Donald Turnupseed, was dazed but mostly uninjured. Dean’s passenger, German Porsche mechanic Rolf Wutherich was badly injured but survived.
Only one of Dean’s movies, “East of Eden,” had been released at the time of his death (“Rebel Without a Cause” and “Giant” opened shortly afterward), but he was already on his way to superstardom – and the crash made him a legend.

Carole Landis was a beautiful and talented American actress, singer, and popular WWII pin-up girl who starred as Jill McGann in the 1944 Columbia Pictures espionage thriller “Secret Command” (which had “By Secret Command” as a working title). She played an agent tasked with pretending to be the wife of an undercover Navy spy, Sam Gallagher (played by Pat O’Brien). The film centered on Gallgher’s efforts to find Nazi saboteurs in a shipyard during World War II.
After starting in bit parts and as an extra (including in “A Star Is Born” in 1937), Landis's breakout role came as the cave girl Loana in the Hal Roach production “One Million B.C.” (1940), which made her a star and earned her the nickname "The Ping Girl" and “The Chest” due to her curvy figure. She appeared in over 50 films in the early 1940s, often as the second female lead, including the film noir “I Wake Up Screaming” (1941) and the musical “Moon Over Miami” (1941) with Betty Grable. Her career faced challenges after her relationship with studio head Darryl F. Zanuck ended, leading to her being assigned to lesser pictures.
Landis was a dedicated contributor to the war effort, traveling over 100,000 miles to entertain troops with the USO in Europe and the South Pacific—more than any other actress. She wrote a book about her experiences, “Four Jills in a Jeep” (1944), which was made into a movie in which she played herself. She appeared on Broadway in the musical “A Lady Says Yes” in 1945. Her final two films, “Noose” and “Brass Monkey”, were made in Great Britain and released posthumously.
Carole Landis's life ended tragically when she committed suicide by an overdose of barbiturates on July 5, 1948, at the age of 29. Her death was widely attributed to career struggles, personal problems (including four failed marriages), poor health from her war service (including malaria and dysentery), and the end of a passionate affair with the married British actor Rex Harrison, who refused to divorce his wife, Lilli Palmer, for her. Harrison was the one who discovered her body but waited several hours before calling the authorities, a point that has led Landis's family and some sources to question the official suicide ruling.
The character Jennifer North in Jacqueline Susann's novel “Valley of the Dolls” is widely believed to be based on Landis.
