This past week.. Teignmouth has been rather chaotic.. With Hollywood stars Colin Firth.. (Kings Speech).. & Rachel Weisz.. (Oscar winner).. filming the true story of Donald Crowhurst.. who entered the first around the world yacht race in 1968..
I was fortunate to see her leave the pier in her car.. so quickly walked over to the parked mobile homes.. and got these shot as she got out.. of the car to go inside.. she was kind enough to turn around for quick glance..

Last night i was very lucky to get some shots of Cameron Diaz at the Shrek 3 launch at the state theatre.
Joe DiMaggio’s bride-to-be was Dorothy Arnold, a Hollywood actress and singer. The two met on the set of the film “Manhattan Merry-Go-Round” and were married the following month, on November 19, 1939. Their relationship was a blend of celebrity glamour and private tension, and although they divorced in 1944, they had a son, Joe DiMaggio Jr.
Born Giuseppe Paolo DiMaggio in 1914, Joe DiMaggio became one of the most revered figures in American baseball. He played his entire 13-year career with the New York Yankees, earning a reputation for elegance on the field and an almost mythic consistency at the plate. His most iconic achievement remains the 56-game hitting streak in 1941—a record that still stands. DiMaggio was a three-time MVP, a 13-time All-Star, and helped lead the Yankees to nine World Series titles, cementing his legacy as a symbol of excellence and grace in the sport. He also served in the U.S. Army Air Forces during World War II, missing three prime seasons (1943–1945), which likely cost him even greater career statistics.
Joe DiMaggio was famously nicknamed “The Yankee Clipper,” a moniker coined by announcer Arch McDonald who likened DiMaggio’s smooth, gliding fielding style to the sleek Pan American Clipper airplanes of the era. He was also affectionately known as “Joltin’ Joe” for his powerful hitting and as simply “Joe D.” among fans and teammates.
After retiring in 1951, DiMaggio’s fame extended beyond baseball. In 1954, he married Marilyn Monroe, the era’s most luminous film star. Their marriage lasted just nine months, strained by the pressures of fame and differing lifestyles, but DiMaggio’s devotion endured. He remained close to Monroe after their divorce and famously arranged her funeral after her death in 1962, sending roses to her grave for decades. DiMaggio passed away in 1999, remembered not only as a baseball legend but as a poignant figure in America’s cultural tapestry.

The American music producer Quincy Jones (1933-2024) sadly passed on November 3rd.
In May of this year, artist Stephen B. Whatley got to pay tribute to the music genius as part of a major commission of his cartoon illustrations for the forthcoming memoirs of 1950s & 1960s film star, Mamie Van Doren (1931-).
In undertaking this commission of chapter illustrations over several months the artist has been privileged to absorb the many profound and exciting twists and turns in the extraordinary life of the beautiful blonde film actress, who shone on screen in such films as The All American (1953), with Tony Curtis; Teacher’s Pet (1958), with Clark Gable and Doris Day ; and High School Confidential (1958) with Russ Tamblyn.
Not only did Whatley absorb details of her stories but sought to capture visually the feeling and atmosphere of her memories - such as this scene when Mamie enjoyed a performance of Quincy Jones early in his career. Always a talented singer, Mamie had aspirations towards being a jazz singer at the time, loving such singers as Lena Horne and Dinah Washington.
Quincy was lead trumpet player and music arranger, performing here with Lionel Hampton & his orchestra at a jazz club, Club Oasis in East Los Angeles - and spotting Mamie ultimately led to a friendship and love affair.
Mamie Van Doren’s memoirs are entitled ‘Secrets of The Goddess’ due for publication in 2025….watch this space for further updates.

A new cartoon tribute by artist Stephen B. Whatley celebrating the 1950s TV work of Hollywood actress Paula Hill (USA 1926-2000).
These cartoons were inspired by B&W freeze frames taken from episodes of her TV shows showing on Youtube at one time.
The actress was born Paula Mary Hill in Alabama, USA and came to Hollywood in the 1940s, determined to pursue her ambition to be an actress; first setting up a hot dog stand business as security.
She was credited as Mary Hill in some of her movies ; as she was in her only leading lady role in the now cult sci-fi movie Mesa of Lost Women (1953) and her small role in the classic monster picture, The Beast From 20,000 Fathoms (1952).
A striking beauty the actress possessed a velvet voice and was capable of a whole range of acting in her 40s and 50s pictures- but remains mainly unknown and unsung - except to some classic film buffs.
Her film work seems to have petered out by 1958, though she did much TV work in that decade, including memorable roles on the Burns & Allen Show (1955) and Dragnet (1956) ; and by the early 1960s she was singing in clubs in New York City and acting in the theatre in Los Angeles.
She made a surprise return to the screen in the last decade of her life in two cameos in film maker Steve Burrows's films Soldier of Fortune (1991) and Chump Change (2000).
Artist Stephen B. Whatley is primarily an painter of expressionist oil paintings - whose vibrant work is permanently show-cased outside the Tower of London, through his series of 30 paintings charting the Tower's history that were commissioned in 2000.
The artist has long been fascinated in biographical research of the stars and players of Hollywood's Golden Age - and enjoys creating cartoon tributes to often unsung actors, active in that classic era.
Most recently, the artist has been creating cartoon illustrations commissioned by Hollywood film star Mamie Van Doren (1931-) to be published in her forthcoming memoirs, Secrets of The Goddess.
