On the Western shores of the Larnaca salt lake, the Tekke is the third holiest place place for Muslims in the world.
The shrine was built during the Ottoman administration of Cyprus in the 18th century around the Tomb of Umm Haramn, wet nurse to the the Islamic prophet Muhammad. The very old lady fell from her mule and died during a siege of Larnaca during the first Arab raids on Cyprus around 647 and 649.
The shot was taken minutes after sunrise when the lake waters were very still. The flamingos were busy having their shrimp breakfast on the other side of the lake and much as I waited, not even one came to see what I was up to. Perhaps next time they may be more friendly.

Unusual for this time of the year but following earlier very heavy rains, the Salt Lake still holds a lot of water.

Amritsar is the site of one of the British Empires most efficient massacres.
The city is in the northwestern Indian state of Punjab, 28 kilometers from the border with Pakistan. At the center of its walled old town, the gilded Golden Temple (Harmandir Sahib) is the holiest gurdwara (religious complex) of the Sikh religion. It’s at the end of a causeway, surrounded by the sacred Amrit Sarovar tank (lake), where pilgrims bathe.

Varanasi, India, located on the banks of the river Ganges is one of the world's oldest continually inhabited cities, and one of the holiest in Hinduism. Pilgrims come to the Ganges here to wash away sins in the sacred waters, to cremate their loved ones, or simply to die here, hoping for liberation from the cycle of rebirth.
Varanasi has been a cultural center of northern India for several thousand years. The city is known worldwide for its many Ghats, embankments made in steps of stone slabs along the river bank where pilgrims perform ritual ablutions.

Most visitors agree Varanasi is magical – but not for the faint-hearted. Intimate rituals of life and death take place in public, and the sights, sounds and smells of the maze-like old town – not to mention almost constant attention from touts – can be intense. Still, the so-called City of Light is one of the most colorful and fascinating places on earth.
Strolling the Ghats or watching sunrise from a boat on the Ganges are a highlight, and confronting the reality and ritual of death can be a powerful experience. (Lonely Planet)

BEAUTY OF WHO YOU ARE- By Marc Broussard
There's a soft sweet space on the back of your neck
Smells like rain
There's a way you look at me baby
Heals my pain
Now I've studied every inch of your body
Baby what's on your mind
The touch of your skin just pulls me in
Every single time
There's a silent conversation
Filled with hidden revelations
In your eyes
[Chorus]
Baby in so into you
Every whisper from you soul to my heart
Baby I know its true
You're a sweet little mystery sent to me from the stars
And that's the beauty of who you are
Oh yeah
There's a faith you're saving for a rainy day
I could use right now
There's a way you move my soul to sing
Only you know how
You are sensual salvation
With the holiest temptation
Baby I'm never never never gonna be the same
[Chorus]
I can't explain it
Only begin to conceive
All I know is that you make me believe
Baby I'm so into you
Every whisper from you soul to my heart
Baby I know its true
You're a sweet little mystery sent to me from the stars
And that's the beauty of who you are
Pose- Yahina

Varanasi, also known as Benares, or Kashi , is a city on the banks of the Ganges in the Uttar Pradesh state of North India. The spiritual capital of India, it is the holiest of the seven sacred cities (Sapta Puri) in Hinduism and Jainism, and played an important role in the development of Buddhism.
Acre known to locals as Akko (Hebrew) or Akka is among the oldest continuously-inhabited settlements on Earth, dating back to about 2000 BC with initial settlements dating back to about 3000 BC. It has been subject to conquest and destruction several times and survived as little more than a large village for centuries at a time. Acre was an important city during the Crusades, and was the site of several battles. It was the last city held by the Crusaders in the Levant before it was captured in 1291.
In present-day Israel, the population was 49,380 in 2019 made up of Jews, Muslims, Christians, Druze, and Baháʼís. 32% of the city's population is Arab. And Acre is the holiest city of the Baháʼí Faith and receives many pilgrims of that faith every year.
Acre's Old City has been designated by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site.
As you probably already know, Easter lilies are symbolic of purity and as well, the Christian belief in the resurrection of Jesus Christ.
The bulb grows for three years before it's shipped to greenhouses and 'timed to bloom' for Easter. And so the symbolism of the bulb emerging from the ground continues through the Christian belief that Jesus Christ was resurrected.
It is our holiest time of the year.
Amen
Enjoy the weekend however it has meaning for you, flickr friends....Pat....xo
The Shrine of the Báb is a structure in Haifa, Israel where the remains of the Báb, founder of the Bábí Faith and forerunner of Bahá'u'lláh in the Bahá'í Faith, have been buried; it is considered to be the second holiest place on Earth for Bahá'ís, after the Shrine of Bahá'u'lláh in Acre. Its precise location on Mount Carmel was designated by Bahá'u'lláh himself to his eldest son, `Abdu'l-Bahá, in 1891. `Abdu'l-Bahá planned the structure, which was designed and completed several years later by his grandson, Shoghi Effendi.
Crowning the design, as anticipated by `Abdu'l-Bahá, is a dome, which is set on an 18-windowed drum. That, in turn, is mounted on an octagon, a feature suggested by Shoghi Effendi. An arcade surrounds the stone edifice. A restoration project of the exterior and interior of the shrine started in 2008 and was completed in April 2011.

The Golden Temple, also known as Harmandir Sahib, meaning "abode of God" or Darbār Sahib, meaning "exalted court" , is a Gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India.[It is the holiest Gurdwara and the most important pilgrimage site of Sikhism.
The temple is built around a man-made pool (sarovar) that was completed by Guru Ram Das in 1577. Guru Arjan – the fifth Guru of Sikhism, requested Sai Mir Mian Mohammed – a Muslim Pir of Lahore to lay its foundation stone in 1589. In 1604, Guru Arjan placed a copy of the Adi Granth in Harmandir Sahib, calling the site Ath Sath Tirath (lit. "shrine of 68 pilgrimages"). The temple was repeatedly rebuilt by the Sikhs after it became a target of persecution and was destroyed several times by the Muslim armies from Afghanistan and the Mughal Empire. Maharaja Ranjit Singh after founding the Sikh Empire, rebuilt it in marble and copper in 1809, overlaid the sanctum with gold foil in 1830. This has led to the name the Golden Temple.
Please see the big queue of pilgrims on the left side of the photograph waiting to enter the sanctum sanctorum.

Just when you think hope is lost
And giving up is all you got
And blue turns black, your confidence is cracked
There seems no turning back from here
Sometimes there isn't an obvious explanation
Why the holiest hearts can feel the strongest palpitations
That's when you can build a bridge of light
That's what turns the wrong so right
That's when you can't give up the fight
That's when love turns night-time into day
That's when loneliness goes away
That's why you got to be strong tonight
Only love can build us a bridge of light
(from "Happy Feet Two" soundtrack)
A pura is a Balinese Hindu temple, and the place of worship for adherents of Balinese Hinduism in Indonesia. Shah-i-Zinda necropolis, city of Samarkand, Uzbekistan
Samarkand, also spelled Samarqand, has been at the crossroads of world cultures for over two and a half millennia, and is one of the most important sites on the Silk Routes traversing Central Asia. It is probably the most famous Uzbekistan’s historic city. It boasts very impressive architectural monuments and a rich history.
Shah-i-Zinda is a necropolis and an important place of pilgrimage. The name, which means "Tomb of the Living King", refers to its original, innermost and holiest shrine – a complex of cool, quiet rooms around what is probably the grave of Qusam ibn-Abbas, a cousin of the Prophet Mohammed who is said to have brought Islam to this area in the 7th century.

The Harmandir Sahib (Punjabi: ਹਰਿਮੰਦਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ), also Darbar Sahib (Punjabi: ਦਰਬਾਰ ਸਾਹਿਬ, Punjabi pronunciation: [dəɾbɑɾ sɑhɪb] and informally referred to as the "Golden Temple", is the holiest Sikh gurdwara located in the city of Amritsar, Punjab, India. The city was founded in 1574 by the fourth Sikh guru, Guru Ram Das. The Harmandir Sahib was designed by the fifth guru, Guru Arjan, who had the cornerstone laid by the Muslim Sufi saint Sai Hazrat Mian Mir on 28 December 1588. Guru Arjan completed the Adi Granth, the holy scripture of Sikhism, in 1604 and installed it in the gurdwara.
There are four doors to get into the Harmandir Sahib, which symbolize the openness of the Sikhs towards all people and religions. The present-day gurdwara was rebuilt in 1764 by Jassa Singh Ahluwalia with the help of other Sikh Misls. In the early nineteenth century, Maharaja Ranjit Singh secured the Punjab region from outside attack and covered the upper floors of the gurdwara with gold, which gives it its distinctive appearance and its English name.
The Harimandir Sahib is considered holy by Sikhs. The holiest text of Sikhism, the Guru Granth Sahib, is present inside the gurdwara during daytime and the holy book goes for Sukhasan during the night time. Its construction was mainly intended to build a place of worship for men and women from all walks of life and all religions to come and worship God equally. Over 100,000 people visit the holy shrine daily for worship

St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the holiest temples for Christendom and one of the largest churches in the world. It is where the Pope presides many liturgies all year round.
The construction of the new basilica began in 1506, when the old basilica had been torn down, and was finished in 1626. It was consecrated on 18 November, 1626. Several renowned architects designed the temple, highlighting the works of Bramante, Michelangelo and Carlo Maderno.
The basilica was called St Peter’s after one of Jesus’s twelve disciples known as Saint Peter, who became one of the founders of the Catholic Church and was executed in Rome and buried where the Basilica now stands.
The holiest shrine of the Sikhs, in the Holy city of Amritsar, my home town.
Known by many names, the original being "Harimandar Sahib", it is more popular as The Golden Temple, because of the shining top being actually made of real Gold.
Quick Facts -
The foundation of the gurudwara was amazingly laid down by a Muslim sage called Mian Mir, though its construction was started by Guru Ram Das in 1588 and completed by another Sikh Guru, Guru Arjun Dev.
1) The temple has entrances from all the four direction, which signifies that people of diverse backgrounds are allowed to make an entry to the gurudwara, which welcomes them all with open arms.
2) The Temple is made of white marble, and the top is embellished with real gold, which is why it gets the name of Golden Temple.
3) The Temple is located on a level below the ground level as it signifies that one must be humble and go down to reach the temple of God.
4) The temple was devastated again and again, first by the Mughals and the Afghans and later during a clash between the Indian Army and terrorists in the Operation Blue Star of the eighties. But it has now been renovated and stands as a mark of glory and splendor of the Sikh religion.
5) The Golden Temple has been a monument of worldwide fame on account of organizing the largest langar sewa in the world, where more than 35000 people are fed on a daily basisand the numbers can touch 2,00,000 on special holy occasions.
6) The manmade lake around the temple is known as 'Amrit Sarovar' which is translated as ‘Pool of Holy Nectar’.
7) The temple is considered holy such that of about 1,00,000 visitors daily, 35% of the pilgrims that visit it are from faiths other than Sikh.

Almost everything about Mashhad relates to its role as the holiest city in Iran, even its name (literally: burial place of the martyr). Mashhad started life out as Sanabad, a village pitstop for trade caravans headed towards Turkmenistan. But in the ninth century, the eighth Shi'ite Imam Ali Bin Moosa Al Reza, the great grand son of Imam Ali who was the cousin & son in law of Prophet Mohammad was poisoned by the caliph of the time. Imam Reza was buried in Mashhad, and his shrine became one of the holiest sites to the shi'ite muslims after the Holy Kaaba in Saudi Arabia and Karbala in Iraq (wikitravel).

Pushkar in Rajasthan, India is one of the holiest places for Hindus. The lake around which Pushkar is inhabited is believed to be a holy creation. Seen here in this black and white shot is a white bearded Sadhu, with a turban on his head, bag on one shoulder and shawl on the other, walking in one of the streets of Pushkar. He seemed happy to be clicked and his face is beaming with joy. Though not too old, his smile made his wrinkles on his face more pronounced. He wears holy beads around his neck and has a vermillion and ash spot on his forehead!

Pura Besakih is a temple (pura) complex in the village of Besakih on the slopes of Mount Agung in eastern Bali, Indonesia. It is the most important, the largest and holiest temple of Hindu religion in Bali, and one of a series of Balinese temples. Perched nearly 1000 meters up the side of Gunung Agung, it is an extensive complex of 23 separate but related temples with the largest and most important being Pura Penataran Agung. The temple is built on six levels, terraced up the slope. The entrance is marked by a candi bentar (split gateway), and beyond it the Kori Agung is the gateway to the second courtyard

"We are lucky to have done things as one", Robert Lowell wrote as a last line of his poem SHAVING (from DAY BY DAY, 1975).
Togetherness.
Intimacy stemming from everyday life shared through time and space, for this couple I have met in Haridwar, Uttarakhand, Northern India. They were so peacefully sharing every single satisfying detail of their visit of one of the holiest places in India.
A pleasure for the eye and the soul, to watch their silent complicity and mutual understanding.

Lalibela, Amhara, Ethiopia. 2010.
"Three things are necessary for the salvation of man: to know what he ought to believe; to know what he ought to desire; and to know what he ought to do."
-- St. Thomas Aquinas
Lalibela (Amharic: ላሊበላ) is a town in Amhara Region, northern Ethiopia famous for monolithic rock-cut churches. The whole of Lalibela offers an exceptional testimony to the medieval and post-medieval civilization of Ethiopia. Lalibela is one of Ethiopia's holiest cities, second only to Aksum, and a center of pilgrimage. Unlike Aksum, the population of Lalibela is almost completely Ethiopian Orthodox Christian. Ethiopia is one of the earliest nations to adopt Christianity in the first half of the fourth century, and its historical roots date to the time of the Apostles. The churches themselves date from the seventh to thirteenth centuries, and are traditionally dated to the reign of the Zagwe dynasty king Gebre Mesqel Lalibela (r. ca. 1181–1221 AD). Looking down the Tiber River and Pomte Sant' Angelo towards Vatican City and mighty St Peters in the background. St. Peter’s Basilica is one of the holiest temples for Christendom and one of the largest churches in the world. The construction of the new basilica began in 1506, when the old basilica had been torn down, and was finished in 1626. It was consecrated on 18 November, 1626. Several renowned architects designed the temple, highlighting the works of Bramante, Michelangelo and Carlo Maderno.
