Bells from a Christmas holiday doorknob ringer. The right side of the picture is ambient light from our Christmas tree. The left side is lit by an incandescent Maglite flashlight with one layer of white tissue paper in front to diffuse the light. A lit miniature Christmas tree is in the background.

I love this shot very much.

No doubt Xmas is a merry, bright and sparkly time. But it's also the time of a splendid white winter beauty, the time of cozy evenings and calm, slow mornings. And as for me, it's the time for our childhood holiday memories and the lovely decorations.

I hope I managed to capture this very atmosphere in this picture.

No white background was used. No postprocessing either (except cutting off extra white space from the top and the bottom of the photo). It snowed heavily that morning. That's why a window + a low shutter speed + a candle behind the wreath for an orangish tone were enough.

Tomorrow marks the beginning of December, the most festive (and probably busiest month of the year. ) This year we made the choice to forego gift giving/receiving, unhealthy spending and stressful schedules! The most challenging decisions I want to make this month are things such as: Can buttery popcorn and apple slices be considered a meal (my kids say yes), which is better in front of the fire - apple cider or hot cocoa (this is rhetorical, anything chocolate is better ha!) We can't wait to spend more TIME with each other and the people we love. Time is a powerful gift and too often overlooked.

This is my six year old son, we had a lot of fun today taking hot cocoa pictures;) My time with my kids is so precious to me.

May your December be happy and bright!

It's been ages since I've caressed the face of old keys on a piano like the one above. I own a very nice Yamaha M08 with weighted keys. It makes beautiful music but it is not and never will be the same as a real piano. I grew up playing a piano just like the one in this picture. I remember how my Mom found our first piano for sale. The owner was in a hurry and took her offer of $50. The piano was well worn with scars that bore many many years of hard love and weather. Scratched, out of tune and keys with missing tops. It came into our home as an orphan. but it didn't take long for me to fall head over heels in love. We cleaned up well and got it tuned as well as fixed. It had a delightful rich and vibrant sound. I was 11 years old and began to teach myself to play. Soon after I begged my parents for lessons and my life long passion for piano was well on its way. Years forward, we no longer have the old piano. I have nice keyboard that I still get out on occasion to play all my old favorites on. Claire De Lune, Pathetique, Voices of Spring are some of my favorite pieces. At the moment we live in a very small place where unfortunately I am unable to keep my keyboard out permanently. It's a hassle to get the stand, cords, amplifier... it rarely comes out and I miss it greatly.

We had pulled into this little park where the lights lite up the entire park supposedly at particular time. We sat waiting, kids were fidgeting to get out and I let them all out to walk around while we waited for the magical moment. I couldn't have planned it better. As we walked across the concrete towards a covered wood pavilion, the lights clicked on around the park, bokeh exploded in my peripheral vision and there in the corner under the covered pavilion sat an old weathered upright piano. I couldn't contain myself. I sat down and ran my fingers over the old keys. Although it was not the same piano I grew up with, all the old feelings for my old friend flooded back over me. It was a close enough resemblance that I felt an immediate bonding. I don't know if that piano had sang that loudly in a long time. My kids stood beside me and sang on the top of their lungs while I pounded out their favorite Christmas classics. I ended with Jesu, Son of Man's Desiring. It echoed over the park and I couldn't help but notice people standing nonchalantly around listening to me play and to my children sing. It was probably one of the most joyful and magical moments of my entire year. I took this picture of my 5 year old son who seems Mohave taken quite a shine to piano himself. Technically the picture is quite a bit grainy. But those lights behind him and most importantly the old keys under my son's hands were a bigger priority. Coming home and looking at this picture again, I can't help loving it. And if I love a picture I like to share it here. Sorry for such a long rambling story/memory. Just wanted to share the magic behind the moment. So glad I had my camera on me!

I wish each and every one of you an amazing New Year with nothing less than joy and happiness. Thank you for another year of friendship and support in my photography journey.

So much love xx

Rachel

Like most American families, we put up a Christmas tree. Some years we don't get around to it because "life" can get in the way. But this year we did.

I don't normally shoot at ISO 10000, but this ornament, dangling from the tripod head, kept moving. A tiny portion of the Christmas tree is the blurred background.

Another year, another turn. Round and round we go...

So you think your Christmas Eve is stressful? Spare a thought for our mate Nick. While you’re wrestling with tangled fairy lights, he’s got to visit every nice child in the world, steer a sleigh pulled by reindeer with attitude, and deal with elves who’d rather test the toys than pack them. And then there’s Martha — Mrs. Claus—who’s as caring as she is relentless with her annual lecture.

“Don’t sleigh over the speed limit, Nick! Remember what happened in 2015?” “Wear your gloves this time—you’re not frostbite-proof!”

“For goodness' sake, watch out for Elon's Starlink satellites. You’re not dodging one again this year!” “You don’t need to drink every beer someone leaves out! And maybe skip a few chocolates—remember what the doctor said about your waistline? Chimneys aren’t exactly getting bigger, you know.”

“And that beard! If it catches fire in a chimney, don’t come crying to me!” “Oh, and Nick... there’s no shame in using GPS. Last year’s Paris debacle was not a good look.”

Do you have any Christmas traditions? In our house, we’re Lego nerds through and through. Every year on December 1st, we kick off our annual assembly of the four Christmas-themed Lego sets we own—each boasting over 1,000 pieces. It’s a group effort, with whoever happens to be around joining in, fueled by a glass of red wine, Spotify Christmas carols, and a spirited debate over the best way to sort the pieces. (I’m firmly in the “sort by style, not color” camp by the way)

Of course, there’s the inevitable moments “There’s no red piece that’s a double with four blocks and a slant on one side!” Yet somehow, my wife always finds it — usually in a spot I *just checked*. I’m convinced she hides them for fun.

After a week of meticulous building, we finally finish one set... only to discover an alarming number of leftover pieces. Why do I have five green tree branch when I desperately need an orange Christmas light? By that point, it doesn’t really matter though.

Then there’s our grandson. When he arrives, the intricate builds we’ve painstakingly constructed are gleefully demolished in search of *that one perfect block* he absolutely must have. That’s the best part of it all — the chaos, the laughter, the tradition. It’s not about getting it to look like the picture on the box (it never does anyway). It’s about the journey, the memories, and the fun of doing it together.

Wishing you a merry Christmas, I hope you enjoy whatever you are up to !

Every host knows that it is important to have color coordinated treats in-line with the theme. It sets a joyous mood and puts a smile on everyone's face. Try it, it will be a guaranteed sucess!
