The tide was really low, the lowest I have ever seen there, so I went for a little walk along the rocky shoreline and found this little cave. Of course I had to take a peek inside. And as I turned round the sun popped up over the horizon. Cloudy as it was I didn't expect that. Also the tide just turned and started coming in... fast. Time to get outta there.

Blowing Rocks Preserve, Jupiter Island, FL
Blowing Rocks Preserve is an environmental preserve on Jupiter Island in Hobe Sound, Martin County, Florida, USA. It is owned by The Nature Conservancy. It contains the largest Anastasia limestone outcropping on the state's east coast. The limestone outcropping also encompasses coquina shells, crustaceans, and sand.

Guess what? I have more shots of "The Rocks" at the Blowing Rocks Preserve. I went there AGAIN today, this time with Michael.
The light was totally different than last week. Last Sunday the pre-sunrise colors were all a vivid pink (which I missed as I was late), today it was a vibrant orange. It was also lower tide and less windy hence there wasn't too much surf or waves...
If you have the time, please view it large on black.
Bridge Road connects the beach town of Hobe Sound to Jupiter Island, and right before you cross the bridge you'll discover a tree canopy that covers the road. You could easily mistake this for Bent Banyan Way, shared in a previous post here - but this is a completely different location, in a different town.

If I were a cloud
I’d choose a tropical sky
Drifting above oceans
Soaring ever so high
I’d admire my reflection
In the deep blue sea
And create magical shapes
For all the world to see
I’d carry rain to the mountains
And shade to the shore
Traverse countries and continents
In search of mysteries to explore
If I were a cloud
I would fly
Loud and proud.

If but only for a beach alongside the sea,
Be it Maui, Bimini, or Florida Key.
There’s no other place that speaks to my soul.
Like a blue lagoon, or banana wind shoal.
From latitude to longitude, and the elusive southern cross,
Everything under a tropical sun, nourishes my mental floss.

Insomnia hit again last night and I was up at 3:00 am. Checking the weather it said it's currently "partly cloudy" in Jupiter and will be "mostly cloudy" by 7:00 am. Sunrise was at 6:30 am. No rain in the forecast. Excellent!
In the past partly cloudy usually meant no clouds, and mostly cloudy... well some clouds.
Off I went just before 4:00 am. An hour later just as I was getting off I-95 it started to rain. Grrr...eat! But it stopped. Whew! So as I pulled off the road at Coral Cove 15 minutes later I thought I better take another look at the weather forecast. I didn't fancy getting caught in a downpour on my way to Blowing Rocks. It is a 20 minutes hike along the beach after all. Well, well, well... The first thing I saw was that the forecast had been "upgraded" and the current weather was "fair"... yeah right!
Does this look like fair weather to you? At least it didn't rain.
Farm land, agriculture, and wide open spaces aren't the first things that come to mind when you think of Florida. Yet, less than twenty minutes west of the south Florida's hotel strips and pristine beaches - you'll find grazing cattle, farmers on tractors, and fields of green.
On this morning, just around the corner from the junction of Martin County 708 and 711 - a ghostly band of mist levitates above the fields and drifts along the horizon.

Last night's sunset was a reminder for me, why I shouldn't venture too far off the baten path - especially in gator infested waters. The observation deck on the left is where I should have been standing, and while I was setting up for this series of shots I could see a shadowy figure swimming in front of me towards the pier. Sure enough it was an adolescent alligator about 6' long. I got out of the long grass very quickly and the gator floated right in front of the pier and stared up toward me for about a half hour. Sadly, this small gator's lack of fear towards humans will likely cost him his life - as conservation officers will remove him to avoid a potentially deadly encounter.

Jupiter? Looks More Like Mars.
Blowing Rocks Preserve, Jupiter Island, FL
I got up at 3:45 am yesterday morning to drive the 80 or so miles up to Jupiter Island to meet up with my friends and shoot the sunrise at Blowing Rocks Preserve. I’ve been there before, but figured if I don’t go they’ll get the most amazing clouds, the clouds I am still chasing… LOL. It looked like I got lucky, because there were clouds… yeah… We had some nice sky, orange horizon, blue sky and grayish clouds.
I set up my first shot 30 minutes before sunrise, fire off three shots and they all looked purple. I usually shoot in AWB and although my camera sometimes has the tendency to see colors when I don’t see any, this was a bit weird. No matter what white balance I used, all I got was purple or red. This is one of the shots I took with the WB set to “cloudy”, which really turned things red. Once the sun came up the colors were fine.
Maybe it was that sand blowing in from the Sahara desert they were talking about in the news?
Oh, I am sure I could fiddle around a bit more in Lightroom to get the colors I saw, but well, call me lazy. And I kinda like the red tones, although I found it a bit strange.
But the weird colors were soon my least concern. I was merrily shooting away, when I all of a sudden noticed a strange line running across part of my image. I was like “what is that?” When I looked at it closer, I saw I had that line in all my shots. I had cleaned the sensor the night before to remove some dust spots and now I have a line running across my images. Did I scratch the sensor? I panicked…
Silly, really, as I didn’t touch the senor and even if I would have I don’t think that glass scratched that easily.
I tried the sensor clean, the line stayed were it was. Darn it! I didn’t have my rocket blower with me, besides it was rather windy at the beach and I had no intention of taking the lens off anyway. So after missing the sunrise because of that I just kept shooting. Eventually, after doing a “sensor clean” for like 10 times the line moved ever so slightly. Whew! At least it’s not a scratch.
I did a manual clean once I got home and it looks like whatever it was is gone, but that really freaked me out.

I am mesmerized by this urban forest of Banyan trees along SE St. Lucie Blvd in Port Salerno. At the right time of day these trees let in just enough light to give the canopy backlit sunlight.

Ominous skies greet me as I head west on Bridge Road 708, driving past swaying fields of sugar cane and cattle grazing in lush, green fields. Once you get away from the hotels and beaches, there are plenty of wide open spaces to explore in Florida.

I have uploaded a "portrait" version of the storm cloud to the left earlier this week. This was taken about 10 minutes later as the sun was rising (in the center of the shot) bathing the clouds to the left in orange and the clouds to the right in pink light.
More detail can be seen in the larger view.

...and My Feet Were Wet.
Blowing Rocks Preserve, Jupiter Island, FL
For this one I climbed down the the rocks and shot from sea level... and as I said got my sneakers wet doing so. Those waves were anything put predictable. The rocks you see in so many of my other shots were behind me and to the left of me and about 6 ft. high.
Please view it large on black.
Blowing Rocks Preserve, Jupiter Island, FL
This is another shot from my first morning visit to "the rocks". There was more surf and stronger winds blowing in from the East, so there was some splashing going on. But to really see those rocks "blowing", I think it needs a minor hurricane or at least a tropical storm...
So you know where I gonna be if we should get a tropical storm warning this season. :-D
If you have a moment, please view this large on black.
Splish-Splash I (an afternoon shot from last year) and here is another shot from the same rocks at slightly different angle: Step Back from the Edge... NOW.

Gently swaying in a trade wind breeze,
Holding court along the shore.

Coral Cove is located in Jupiter, just a short distance south of Blowing Rocks Preserve. Together they make one of three rocky beaches on the east coast of Florida, along with Marineland/Washington Oaks and Big Talbot Island. After today I've visited all three.

This morning I veered a little off the beaten path and headed west on Martin County 708, with the mission of disproving the notion that Florida is nothing more than beaches, palm trees, swamps, and everglades. The perfect combination of sunshine, rain, and humidity make this part of Florida nature's natural greenhouse. Things just grow ... and grow ... and grow ...

The canopy of trees that separates Hobe Sound from the enclave of Jupiter Island is fascinating, and looks different throughout the day as light penetrates through the dense canopy from different angles. At the other end of the tunnel lies the pristine beaches of Jupiter Island and some of the most expensive beachfront estates in Florida.
