Misericord depicting a king of England, possibly Edward III or Henry IV. St Laurence’s Church, Ludlow, Shropshire, England
Magnificent stained glass window of Jasper Tudor and his wife Katherine Woodville in one of many castles he possessed. Jasper Tudor, Duke of Bedford, Earl of Pembroke, was the uncle of King Henry VII of England and a leading architect of his nephew's successful accession to the throne in 1485 when his army delivered defeat to King Richard III‘s forces at the Battle of Bosworth. He was from the noble Tudor family of Penmynydd in North Wales. He wears his coat of arms, granted to him by his maternal half-brother, King Henry VI, an arms quarterly with the addition of a bordure azure (blue border) with Martlets (heraldic stylised birds known as Martens similar to a swallow). Cardiff Castle, Wales.
I bought this book at the amazing Simon Schama reading Friday night. Standing in line to get our books signed, I told Katie about how I asked David Eggers to write something dirty in my copy of "How We Are Hungry" and he obliged by writing "Dick Cheney's daugher is GAY!" on the title page. When it was out turn to have Simon autograph our books, rotten Katie blurted out "She wants you to write something dirty!" Sheepishly, I added, "Yeah, and could I have a heart too?" (Lest you think we're entirely socially retarded, Schama was wearing red suede ankle boots with blue and black artistic socks. He made fun of Mel Gibson for thinking of himself as a historian, he was totally game for off-color book-signing banter.) Hence, now my copy of Landscape and Memory says "To Claire of the pink lacing" which does indeed sound dirty if you're not privy to the information that I had lilac shoelaces on that night. Swoon, swoon, swoon.
Passageway high in the Western ward of Caernarfon Castle. Built after the conquest of Wales by King Edward I of England (Longshanks) as part of The Iron Ring. A series of forts from which English garrisons could launch sorties against uprisings. Caernarfon, North Wales 1283AD
Took this on a gloomy moody day in Berlin - perfect conditions!
This Quadriga sits atop the Brandenburg Tor and depicts Viktoria driving the chariot. It was looted by Napoleon in 1806, and returned to Berlin by Field Marshal Gebhard von Blücher in 1814. Her olive wreath was subsequently replaced by an Iron Cross.

Magnificent side gates of St Mary's Church (Norwegian: Mariakyrkja, Mariakirken) a parish church in Bergen municipality in Hordaland county. Bergen, Norway circa 1140AD
Tower stairwell of Battle Abbey Gatehouse. Within the estates is the field of The Battle of Hastings 1066, where the Norman army finally met the Saxon army. Here, more than 10,000 were slain in a nine hour battle that changed the course of known history. In 1070, Pope Alexander II ordered the Normans to do penance for killing so many during the conquest of England. In response, William the Conqueror vowed to build an abbey where the Battle of Hastings had taken place, with the high altar of its church on the supposed spot where Saxon King Harold Godwinson was slain on 14 October 1066. This gatehouse protects the abbey and estates. Battle Abbey, High Weald Area North of Hastings, East Sussex, English South Coast.
This place used to be a sandwich shop, but now it is a dark bar in a random location where you can buy all of the art on the walls, but you have to put money in a jukebox to get it. The glass I am holding previously held a cosmo, which I don't usually make a point to drink, except this specific beverage came with a polaroid picture, hence its name, the Andy Warhol. I insisted that Katie T and Dr. Earenfight also be in my picture. Also, I did not buy that drink, Josh who runs the 43 Things / Places / People website bought it for me, which is pretty magical.
