Hólar in Hjaltadalur is one of the most famous historical places in Iceland. There has been a church at Hólar since the 11th century; the current church was built in 1863. Built from read sandstone mined from the mountain that looms over Hólar. It is the oldest stone church in Iceland. The church has a large number of wonderful artefacts dating back to before reformation and as such has a more „catholic"feel to it than most churches in Iceland. During the summer months an attendant is there to assist and guide you through the church. The church tower is 27 metres tall and stands next to the church. It was built on the 400th anniversary of the death of the last catholic bishop at Hólar Jón Arason, who was beheaded along with his son in 1550.

At night the first snow fell and an hour before dawn I came to the park.

Krasnogorsk city park is not only a pond with ducks, it is a historical place.

A carefully preserved forest park zone, which is more than 150 years old, was founded on the site of the historical estate "Znamenskoye-Gubailovo". The new estate of V.M. Dolgoruky, the Moscow governor-general, had to correspond to his high rank of commander, and for this purpose a unique site with a unique landscape was chosen.

Under V.V. Dolgoruk (XIX century), the formation of the park received its main development: a regular park with a gazebo and a pavilion was laid out, and a pine forest in the north-western part of the estate began to play the role of a landscape "English" garden with walking paths.

In 1930, the foundation was laid for the organization of a city park of culture, the official opening of which took place in 1940.

The park was named “Park of Culture and Leisure of the Krasnogorsk Mechanical Plant”. It became one of the first urban cultural institutions in the city, founded in the first half of the 20th century.

Before the war, it was the busiest place where people could watch movies, drama performances, attend concerts, dance, and spin on the carousel. The doors of the new restaurant were opened for the townspeople.

When the Great Patriotic War began, during the days of the defense of Moscow, shelters-cracks were dug out in front of the main entrance to the park for residents of nearby houses. In 1941, a cavalry regiment of the Red Army was stationed in the park.

In 1948, the park territory was significantly expanded. German prisoners of war built a gate with columns and ticket booths (demolished in 1997), new alleys were broken, linden trees and ornamental shrubs were planted, stone flower beds were installed, and a fountain was set up.

In the late 90s, the reconstruction of the park began. A metal fence appeared almost along the entire perimeter, a new "Green Theater" was built. There are barbecue houses on the banks of one of the ponds.

A historical place in Moscow is Petrovskie Linii Street. The modern street is located on the site where the "Old Kuznetskaya Sloboda" existed. History refers us to the XV-XVI centuries. An unexplored cultural layer of that period still lies under the asphalt layer. Petrovskikh Lines Street is also famous for the fact that for the first time in the city there were installed electric lamp posts.

The building according to the project of a profitable apartment building with shops for the "Partnership of Petrovsky Trade Lines in Moscow" was designed by architect Boris Freidenberg with the participation of engineer K.I. Shestakov. The construction was completed by 1876. The history of the house is connected with the famous Kovalevsky family, who lived in this house from 1878 to 1883: Sofya Vasilievna - a famous mathematician and mechanic, Vladimir Onufrievich - a geologist and paleontologist, a member of the Paris Commune.

On the right is the Budapest hotel. Which was built in 1876 by the architect Freudenberg. Its architecture is a typical transition from classicism to modernity for that time.

A beautiful small historical place, in Central part of Montenegro. In ancient time was an important trading route through Montenegro.

Rijeka Crnojevica is located near the most beautiful part of Lake Skadar. The whole surrounding area is spectacular. There is an beautiful old bridge that was used for the trade route, that is very impressive and worth to visit.

If you visit this wonderful place in summertime, do not be scared when you see a big number of snakes in the lake and people who swim near them. In fact they are very harmless.

You can hike from Rijeka Crnojevica to Virpazar or other nearby places, or just borrow a canoe for couple of euros and enjoy on a amazing lake tour.

This is for Ronaldo thanks for the link to my Portugal set under your last photos - this is a most charming and historical place, where you can see the similarity with some buildings in some parts of Brazil; on the left you may see a bit of the famous Pousada. It is one of my favourite places and I advise anyone who visits Portugal to see it. Enjoy!

Salt workers are seasonal workers with marginal source of income. There is lack of social and health securities for salt workers. They are exposed to hazardous work-environmental factors and work in extreme climatic conditions.

The pair of Pyramidal orchid (Anacamptis pyramidalis) growing next to each other - they ought to be related. 🤔😀

The name of the genus ‘Anacamptis’ originated from the Greek word ‘anakampto’ meaning “bent back”. It refers to characteristic shape of the long flower spur that turns up as seen in the left specimen, and not bent down as in other orchids. The epithet ‘pyramidalis’ means ‘pyramidal shaped’ in Latin, and it doesn’t need further explanations if you looked at the shape of these two flower spikes. Little Solsbury Hill. The last Supermoon is when the Full Moon comes closest to the Earth (that was on the 11th of August with 98% illumination), whereas the Full Moon (99.8% illumination) was on the 12th and moving away from the Earth by 1404 km. So, technically, this is not the Supermoon anymore, but I didn’t really care watching this spectacle.

This shot was taken couple minutes earlier than previously posted one (www.flickr.com/photos/sergeysmirnov/52283901634/) in landscape format (at focal length 115mm) to show more details of illuminated Batheaston and a bit of Bathford at the top right edge of the frame. The picture of the moon was taken separately (f/8; 5 sec at 300 mm), scaled down by a quarter and blended in Photoshop instead of a white ellipsoidal suppose-to-be-a-moon blob created by a long exposure for foreground.

The appearance of a full Moon has always been considered a special event for ages hence every month Full Moon is given different names. In August, it is most often called Sturgeon Moon amongst other given names like Grain Moon, Corn Moon, Lighting Moon or Lynx Moon, reflecting harvest time or weather changing conditions. I didn’t catch sturgeons or hear werewolf, but instead met a couple walking out a lama on a lead on the flats of Little Solsbury Hill amongst few other people who came to enjoy the show. The Mount Nemrut (Nemrut Dağ) is a historical place listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The site is located at an altitude of about 2200 meters (7200 ft). The haunting sculptures overlooking Mount Nemrut are some of the most magnificent that you’ll find anywhere in the world. Giant heads built in the 1st century B.C. under the Commagene Kingdom look out over an incredible sunrise and sunset every day. These massive sculptures are like just about nowhere else in the world, weighing at 6 tons and are a full 10 meters tall.

The sculptures were built by King Antiochus I Theos of Commmagene as a tomb-sanctuary for himself. The sculptures are of himself, of himself, two lions, two eagles and various Greek, Armenian, and Medes gods, such as Zeus-Aramazd or Oromasdes (associated with Zoroastrian god Ahura Mazda), Hercules-Vahagn, Tyche-Bakht, and Apollo-Mihr-Mithras. The sculptures themselves show the “East meets West” nature of the kingdom, as the facial features are Greek but the clothing they’re wearing is decidedly more Eastern. They are no longer standing in their original positions, but the scattered effect of the sculpture’s current positions is almost more jarring than if they were neatly in a row as they almost certainly were originally intended.

Historic Galata Bridge and New Mosque before the sun rises in ramadan. Ramazan ayında güneş doğmadan önce tarihi Galata Köprüsü ve Yeni Cami'nin görüntüsü. Eminönü, Fatih District, Istanbul Province, TURKEI. The Galata is a bridge that spans the Golden Horn in Istanbul City. From the end of the 19th century in particular, the bridge has featured in Turkish literature, theater, poetry and novels. In 1453, during the Conquest of Şehr-i İstanbul, the Turks assembled a mobile bridge by placing their ships side by side across the water, so that their troops could move from one side of the Golden Horn (Haliç) to the other.

Golden Horn Bridge designed by Leonardo da Vinci in 1502. In the years 1502–1503, there were plans to construct the first bridge at the current location. Sultan Beyazıt II solicited a design and Leonardo da Vinci, utilizing three well-known geometrical principles, the pressed-bow, parabolic curve and keystone arch, created an unprecedented single span 240 m long and 24 m wide bridge for the Golden Horn, which would have become the longest bridge in the world of that time, had it been constructed. However, the ambitious design was not approved by the Ottoman Sultan.... This photo is for One1stanbul Photo Album - Candidate Photographs

Antarctica is really an amazing place! just like sailing to the moon...

I collected here for you guys some data about Port Lockroy, which is now a historic monument and museum.

_____________________

Port Lockroy is a bay forming a natural harbour on the north-western shore of Wiencke Island in the Palmer Archipelago in front of the Antarctic Peninsula. The Antarctic base with the same name, situated on Goudier Island in this bay, includes the most southerly operational post office in the world.

The bay was discovered in 1904 and named after Edouard Lockroy, a French politician and Vice President of the Chamber of Deputies, who assisted Jean-Baptiste Charcot in obtaining government funding for his French Antarctic Expedition. The harbour was used for whaling between 1911 and 1931. During World War II, the British military Operation Tabarin established the Port Lockroy Station A on tiny Goudier Island in the bay, which continued to operate as a British research station until January 16, 1962.

The abandoned base was designated a Historic Site and Monument under the Antarctic Treaty and in 1996 restored as a ‘living’ museum. Base A now welcomes visitors to the site every Austral summer, in order to promote the work of the UKAHT on the Peninsula and in the UK and to give visitors a taste of base life from the early days of British occupation. It is visited each Austral summer by approximately 18,000 ship-borne visitors, amounting to one to two ship visits per day.
