A 15-minute drive from the historic district will get you to one of the most beautiful estates in all of Savannah – the Wormsloe Historic Site.

Not only does the Wormsloe have trails branching out through the woods, but it also has historic ruins and paths that run along the edge of the forest, where you can get breathtaking views of the Isle of Hope. The former home and plantation of Noble Jones, Wormsloe offers a precious glimpse into the lives of Georgia’s earliest European settlers. The Jones house was originally constructed of “tabby.” Tabby is a mixture of sand, water, lime and oyster shells. Much of the oyster shells used to build the house came from shell mounds left behind from ancient Indian settlements on the site thousands of years earlier.

After an almost 120 km.(around 75 miles) pilgrimage to Santiago from Sarria in Galicia, Spain, we reached Plaza Obradorio. This is the kilometer 0 point of the road. A shot of tourists and pilgrims (peregrinos those sitting in the square) in front of the XVI century Santiago Parador located in a corner. The building now a magnificent hotel, was for hundreds of years the Royal Hospital of Santiago. The Catholic Kings who began the hospital project aimed at alleviating the recovery of pilgrims from their grueling pilgrimage.

'Why be a copy, when you were born an original'

The Al-Khazneh (building that appears in "Indiana Jones"), for example, is a work of century 1 a.C .: made like real mausoleum. Its façade, of Hellenistic inspiration, impresses by the dimensions: it is 43 meters of height by 30 of width. At the top of one of the mountains surrounding Petra is another work of art: the Ad-Deir, another mausoleum, but which was used in the 5th century AD as a Byzantine church. To visit it, you have to face 800 steps that lead to the top. Petra was a powerful city. The Nabataeans put her on the route of the caravans that crossed the Arabian peninsula towards the Mediterranean or the Red Sea. They have developed irrigation systems and built dams to store rainwater that falls from time to time into the desert. In its peak, the place had 30 thousand inhabitants.

Highfield Historic Site represents a stunning example of early colonial architecture from the Regency Period (1811-1820). From the large French windows of the homestead, visitors are treated to dramatic views of the rugged coastline and Bass Strait beyond.

Construction of what is now the Highfield Historic Site marked the first European occupation in North-West Tasmania. Building commenced in 1826 by convict labour under the watchful eye of Edward Curr, chief agent of Van Diemen’s Land Company. The property originally occupied some 350,000 acres of agricultural land which has reduced over time and today covers 9.5 acres.

Many thanks for your visits, kind comments and faves, very much appreciated.

Near Wawel Royal Castle, in historic Krakow, Poland.

Petra flourished in the 1st century AD when its famous Khazneh structure – believed to be the mausoleum of Nabataean King Aretas IV – was constructed, and its population peaked at an estimated 20,000 inhabitants.

A little bit of Norway in Texas. Immigrants from Norway first began settling in Bosque County in the mid-1800s. With strong ties to its Norwegian heritage, the church and nearby community retained use of Norwegian as the primary language well into the 1900s.

St. Olaf’s Kirke (Church) was built in 1886 by architect Andrew Mickelson and his brothers, Christian and Ole Mickelson to serve the Norwegian immigrants of the area. It was built with local limestone from which it became known locally as “The Rock Church”. The church is now used only for special services.

The church has neither running water nor electricity, and is heated by an old wood-burning stove. Both the stove and the Vocalion Reed Pump Organ were manufactured before 1900. The hand-painted finish on the pews mimic more expensive wood. Pews, floors, and light fixtures are all original. A beautiful carved wooden reredos (altar screen) stands behind the altar with the pulpit in the center above the altar.

As always, your faves and comments are appreciated. Constructive criticism and suggestions are especially welcome as I believe they help to make me a better photographer. Thank you for taking the time to look at my photos.

Cast an eye across the superb panorama in front of you – far above the mortal goings-on of both ancient and modern city – and it’s easy to see how this site must have seemed closer to the sky than the earth.

A walk in Wadi Farusa:

Adventurous travellers often deviate from the main trail through Petra to climb to the High Place of Sacrifice, an area of temples with stunning views of the valley below. It's well worth the trip, but on the way down to reconnect with the main route, push a little further. The walk back past Wadi Farusa offers ample opportunity to sit down for tea with a local family or explore tomb complexes where little more than goat droppings mark the passage of time. Either experience adds a certain depth to Petra that most visitors never make time for.

When the ancient city of Petra reached its peak about 2,000 years ago, most of its structures were carved directly into the sandstone cliffs of the mountains of southern Jordan.

1,5km / 0,7 miles - 1,5h - moderate

The Al-Madras Trail is a hiking trail located in Petra, Jordan. It is a relatively short trail, taking about half a day to complete, and offers stunning views of the ancient city from a different perspective. The trail is named after the Arabic word for "oil press," as the area was once used for agriculture.

The trail starts just before you reach the Siq, the narrow gorge that leads to the main entrance of Petra. From there, it winds through the Wadi Al Madras, a valley that runs parallel to the Siq. Along the way, you will see a variety of Nabataean tombs and other archaeological features.

The highlight of the trail is the High Place of Sacrifice, a religious complex that sits on a hilltop overlooking Petra. The views from here are truly breathtaking.

Here are some additional things to know about the Al-Madras Trail:

It is not as well-marked as some of the other trails in Petra, so it is a good idea to have a map or guide.

The trail can be quite dusty, so it is a good idea to wear shoes with good traction.

There is no shade on the trail, so be sure to wear sunscreen and bring a hat.

The trail is not suitable for people with mobility issues.

If you are looking for a challenging and rewarding hike with amazing views, the Al-Madras Trail is a great option. Just be sure to be prepared for the heat and dust.

The Locked Waterway was re-built as a locked canal permitting canoes entry to the mission from the river. The nature and function of the waterway is still in debate. Other theories include it's use in powering a mill wheel or in drainage.

the bell tower silenced

an eerie stillness.

Built in the 2nd century AD, the gateway originally had huge wooden doors and side towers. It marked the entrance to the temenos (sacred courtyard) of the Qasr Al Bint, separating the commercial area of the city from the sacred area of the temple. The few remaining floral friezes and a figure with an arrow suggest that this was once a very grand structure.

Downhill from the Theatre, the Colonnaded Street marks the centre of the Ancient City. The street was built around AD 106 and follows the standard Roman pattern of an east–west decumanus, but without the normal cardo maximus (north–south axis). Columns of marble-clad sandstone originally lined the 6m-wide carriageway, and covered porticoes gave access to shops.

At the start of the Colonnaded Street is the Nymphaeum, a public fountain built in the 2nd century AD and fed by water channelled from the Siq. Little can be seen today, although it’s recognisable by the huge 450-year-old pistachio tree, giving welcome shade in summer.

Also along the Colonnaded Street are the limited remains of the market area and the unrecognisable ruins of the Royal Palace.

The street ends at the Temenos Gateway. Built in the 2nd century AD, the gateway originally had huge wooden doors and side towers. It marked the entrance to the temenos (sacred courtyard) of the Qasr Al Bint, separating the commercial area of the city from the sacred area of the temple. Look closely for the few remaining floral friezes and a figure with an arrow, which suggest that this was once a very grand structure. Opposite are the minimal ruins of the Nabataean baths.
