Joseph and Mary Hessler built this pine and hemlock log cabin in 1854-1856 on Mission Point Peninsula. According to information given at Mission Point Lighthouse Museum, the Hesslers being non-citizens could not own the property on which the cabin was built. They became citizens in 1859, and their final deed was signed by Abraham Lincoln in 1861.

It may not look like much, but I am sure it seemed like a cozy mansion to the Hesslers on cold Northern Michigan nights in the wilderness.

Mission Point Lighthouse, built in 1870, guided ships through West Traverse Bay, until it was decommissioned in 1933. Today, it is owned by Peninsula Township, and is staffed mainly by volunteers. A small fee is charged, and donations are accepted to view the museum and to climb the stairs to the top of the lighthouse.

Many viewers have commented that The Guardian Building (originally The Union Trust Company Building) reminded them of a church.

This picture shows approximately half of the bank lobby on the main floor. Imagine the original bank building with 60-90 bank teller cages lining the entire length of both sides of this "nave". The ceiling was composed of a 3/4 inch (1.9cm) of horsehair and coated with a layer of plaster cement. Then, a canvas layer was applied, and painted with designs reminiscent of the patterns of Navajo rugs. This was a sound-deadening system.

The "altar piece" ( I suppose) was the three-story mural of the map of the lower peninsula of Michigan. Highlighted were the major Michigan moneymakers of the1890s to 1920s: mining, manufacturing, lumber, fishing, commerce, and agriculture. It was completed in 1929, unfortunately the year of the beginning of "The Great Depression".

This superbly decorated Art-Deco bank building was nicknamed "The Cathedral of Finance." So, if the earlier pictures reminded you of a church (reprised in the first comment below) --you were very observant : -)

What once was, is no longer! When Hurricane Ian came through, it took these structures with it. The small buildings could not take another strong storm. Over the years, little by little the sea and Mother Nature, had it's way.

Esta arcada es punto de división de la arquitectura en forma simétrica, vista desde el frente y a mi derecha.

Somewhat hidden, in a less spectacular side valley of the Moselle, and on an even less spectacular, almost boring hiking trail, you reach Eltz Castle, which is enthroned on a 70-metre-high rock. Its imposing appearance is due on the one hand to this, and on the other hand to its eight residential towers, up to 35 metres high, which make it stand out clearly from its surroundings. This truly impressive overall picture gives the feeling that one has arrived in the Middle Ages through teleportation.

A lamp and windows on the extension to a 140 year old house on the Main Street of Unionville. The old building houses a popular restaurant that is over 40 years old. But like all the restaurants in the area, business is slow because of COVID-19 and winter.

The state of Texas purchased the Alamo chapel but did not restore it.

It was then sold and used as a whole sale grocery store.

A group that called themselves the Daughters of the Republic of Texas convinced the government to buy the Alamo in 1905 so it could be restored.

After a court battle over who would oversee the restoration, the state took control and restoration began in 1912.

Later in 1912 the site was given back to the Daughters of the Republic of Texas and has remained in their custody ever since.

Most days Bodie is closed at 4 PM although there are few days in the year in which the park is open for photographers until 10. Unfortunately we were not able to visit on one of those days. So I found a moon shot I added to one of my photos of the church. I do wish I could take a real one like this some day!

Happy Slider Sunday!

If you walk through the upper town of Luxembourg, you will not only notice the imposing construction of many buildings and walls, but also the self-contained and extremely stable structure. You can still see today that the city was developed into one of the strongest fortresses in Europe from the 17th century. It was nicknamed "Gibraltar of the North".

Known simply as "The Castle, it's a landmark icon in "Heritage Hill", a historic district of Grand Rapids, Michigan. It was built for the lumbermen Fox brothers in 1884-1886 (architect: William G. Robinson). The granite block castle is in the Chateauesque style of architecture. (Romanesque ?)

It was converted to a restaurant in 1978, but when my wife and I visited in 2019, it was the home of the Stonecastle Dentistry.

Two blocks from the Frank Lloyd Wright house (pictured in first comment below), The Castle is a Registered Michigan Historical Site at 455 Cherry St. SE, Grand Rapids, Michigan.

Note: Despite three sources of information (on-site historical marker, Wikipedia entry, text "Walking Tours of Heritage Hill", Thomas H. Logan) that all ID this castle as Chateauesque, I think Bill ( Onasil~Bill Badzo-66M ) has a more credible ID of Romanesque style. Thanks Bill.

Don't know if it is still possible to stay at this hotel in Nelson, Nevada. Nelson is supposedly a ghost town, but it appears a number of people live in the area. There is a firetruck parked nearby although I doubt it would be very helpful in the event of a fire.

Happy Truck Thursday!

Spring has returned to Unionville, just in time for some merchants and too late for others. And this road which you see will be dug up for a year starting this fall, how the restaurants will survive God only knows. Many of the patrons of the older restaurants are quite senior in age, not totally mobile and getting together for lunch is a big part of their social life. I hope the local business chamber has worked out a way to get their wheel chairs through the construction zone. Do buy take outs to support the restaurants during the road closure.

In the 1800s Bergen was Europe’s biggest wooden city, a distinctive city environment with closely spaced wooden buildings, busy streets, markets and alleys. At old Bergen open air Museum you can experience some of this atmosphere and it has today 55 wooden houses, most of which originally stood in the centre of Bergen.

The history of Redpath Memorial Presbyterian Church is as unique as the beach stones used to make this church in 1921. After a fire destroyed the original church, Reverend Redpath worked tirelessly to build this little chapel. After he died in 1926, the small congregation renamed it in his honor.

When lumbering in the area declined, the population decreased, and eventually the little church was abandoned. It stood empty for decades, until the 1960s when the church reopened to a small congregation. Today, summer services are conducted , mainly by lay persons and visiting speakers.

One of several buildings from World War II. Depot was to maintain the submerged anti-submarine nets under the Golden Gate Bridge.

I would love to have seen this building before it was "updated."

The St Paul's Anglican Church on the right here was founded in 1842. In the hall at the rear there is Stanley's museum and discovery centre. On the main street we can just catch a glimpse of the Town Hall with The Nut behind.

St Bartholomew's Church operated as an Anglican church from 1841 to 1967. It is located in Prospect . Blacktown Council acquired the property and has restored it, with an official re-opening in 2001.

I have a lot of family members here in the surrounding cemetery. Some recent others from way back when it opened, I also live not far from this historic site. This is one of our early Churches in Australia.

On our walk through Hisley Woods last Sunday we passed an old farm yard with some lovely stone buildings. A few minutes later we encountered an awful smell on the way and almost stepped into the decaying carcass of a large badger...

Moated Tudor house and gardens. Built in the early 1500s by a courtier of Henry Fitzroy. The latter was the illegitimate son of Henry VIII.

The moated area has an even earlier history. It housed buildings and safe storage for adjacent medieval fish ponds. Dug out in around 1150, they provided eel, perch and pike for the Prior and monks of Norwich Priory and other local monastic establishments.

Biography

Saint Konstantinos was born in Hydra, and his father was called Michael, and his mother Marina.

Eighteen years old he left Hydra and went to Rhodes, near the Turkish ruler Hassan Kapetan. There, Constantine was dragged and defeated, with the name of Hassan, and for three years he enjoyed great prizes. Later, however, he felt his slumber and began to repent. He made mercies and cried bitterly. In the end, to be redeemed, he decided to testify. So he found some spiritual, confessed and asked for his wish to bear witness. His spiritualist, however, prevented him because he was afraid of his young age. Constantine obeyed, abandoned Rhodes and went to the city of Crimea, then to Constantinople and then to Mount Athos.

In the Monastery of Iveron, he was prepared for the martyrdom and after he had received the wish of the fathers he came to Rhodes. There, he presented himself to the ruler and courageously confessed Christ. The torture that followed was terrible. Eventually it was hanged on November 14, 1800 AD.

Today, in his birthplace Hydra, there is a brilliant Temple in his name, where his sacred relic is.

World's first steam powered clock

Historic Gastown

Vancouver, British Columbia

Canada

The insides of this clock is where the magic begins....

Built in 1977. Raymond Saunders' first steam clock was built in 1977 to solve the issue of a steam vent in a popular sidewalk for the renovated Gastown district of Vancouver. Owned by the City of Vancouver, BC Canada

The steam clock's plaque reads:

THE GASTOWN STEAM CLOCK

Designed and built by

Raymond L. Saunders

Horologist

The world's first steam powered clock has been created for the enjoyment of everyone. The live steam winds the weights and blows the whistles. Every 4.5 minutes one steel weight will travel by steam power to the top of the clock. The gravity driven "falling ball" drive was 'engineered' by Douglas L. Smith. Each quarter hour the clock will sound the Westminster Chimes. The large whistle will sound once on the hour. The steam is supplied by the underground system of Central Heat Distributor's Limited. The component parts cost $42,000 and the clock weighs over two tons.

A few years ago the clock was refit and is not entirely steam powered. It also has three small electric motors to help operate two internal fans, one of which blows the steam out the top, and another that controls the valves that play the tunes on the five steam whistles mounted atop the clock case.

The large central whistle, which was taken off the CPR steam tug Naramata, counts off the full hours while the four auxiliary whistles chime the Westminster Quarters every quarter hour. The number of chimes matches the number of quarter hours that have passed.
