I often cut flowers and place them on different bushes,
You see here a Waterlily I just cut to bring indoors with a Chinese lantern that I placed there last week,
Amazing that it is November and the Lilies still blooming,
Even after the frost we had this morning.
We had a fantastic Sunday yesterday, at 74F ever Butterflies were coming back, besides this Painted Lady there were Monarchs and Cabbage whites fluttering around the garden,
I with I had deadhead my Butterfly bushes, only have couple flowers from a younger plant.
September lymphoma awareness month, the ribbon is the color of my Japanese Hinoki,
Finally I posted for Lymphoma, Obviously I am partial to this,
14 years since my enlarged spleen, 5 years in remission with all my numbers normal, had my checkup Monday,
From the start my attitude played big role for me as it did for my triple Bypass, going to work every day and still can fly:-)
Please be aware and care by giving to your local Charities.
Out of the five Hinoki trees I got 4 doing fine and this is the masterpiece by the pond,
The Butterfly is newborn from the Butterfly garden.
That makes me happy.

There is plenty to see at the U.S. National Arboretum, but one of the highlights is the National Bonsai & Penjing Museum.
Situated in Northeast District of Columbia, the museum was the first in the world dedicated to Bonsai and Penjing. Many of the trees found here were gifted by Japanese donors in honor of the U.S. bicentennial in 1976, with several of the trees on display in training for well over 100 years prior to their arrival on U.S. soil.
Walking through the Japanese Pavilion, I came across this Shohin display incorporating Hinoki Cypress, Gardenia, and Japanese Maple under a pergola. The shadows on the wall behind the Shohin display reminded me of the classic Blondie album, Parallel Lines - hence the title, a line from the third single, 'Picture This', released from that album.

I recently got some advice on this tree, there will be some major changes to it.

This Hinoki-Cypress Bonsai tree began its training regimen in 1875 Japan. As with all of the trees displayed at the National Arboretum, it is magnificent; the white branches were fascinating to me, as were the striations in the bark. If in Washington, DC, I highly recommend a trip to this destination.

Hinoki Cypress pruned in the Niwaki style
“Cloud pruning is a Japanese method of training trees and shrubs into shapes resembling clouds. It is known as 'Niwaki', the translation of which is 'garden tree’”
On Tuesday, I spent the day at the Arnold Arborteum talking science with some of the researchers there. One of them was kind enough to give us a tour of the collections, which in this case meant walking around the arborteum looking at trees. Among many cool things he showed us was the Bonsai collection, which includes this hinoki cypress originally planted in the late 1700s.
This Hinoki cypress (Chamaecyparis obtuse) is in its first proper bonsai pot (another beauty by Bryan Albright). I'm really loving this tree.
Repotted 3-22-12. 39" tall from bottom of pot.
I created this little bonsai last spring. It was pruned and wired and, a couple of weeks later, potted into this nice tokoname pot.
I removed the wire late this winter and let the first flush of growth strengthen the tree.
This afternoon I rewired the tree and pruned it again. I removed one "large" branch and quite a bit of foliage. The idea is to continue to develop discrete pads and keep the foliage close to the trunk. The tree stands 4.5" above the soil and is 6.5" wide.
Before and after photos of another of my two tall, spare hinoki cypress bonsai. It's easier to see the two year's development in these side-by-sides.
These trees are clear examples of how more detail - more separate foliage pads - makes a bonsai look older.

This is a similar tree before styling. I bought three upright Hinokis and planned to make a tall five tree forest in the future. The trees thinned out one warm August week and changed my plans.
The following tree is the second in this general style I've made from them. The first will be shown next year I think. The following picture is after a bit more wire and trimming from yesterday's photo.

Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Reis Dwarf' (Joe Reis, NY 1970s) 2020 photo - Common Name: Dwarf Hinoki Cypress, Size at 10 years: 4x2ft., tight, twisted, congested tufts of bright green foliage, USDA Hardiness Zone 4, In Garden Bed HR-VC for 7.9 YEARS (HLG). Planted in 2012.
ACS: Chamaecyparis obtusa 'Reis Dwarf' is a narrow, irregular-upright dwarf selection of Hinoki cypress that features tight, twisted, congested tufts of bright green foliage. Older plants tend to regularly shed dried brown foliage throughout the growing season, meaning it looks best when cleaned out by hand, snipping off the dead branches with small shears. The result, over time, is a very desirable “pom pom” effect that can be quite eye-catching in a formal setting or Japanese garden. Snipping off the whip-like leaders of lateral shoots will encourage this effect. The plant works well in containers and can make an interesting Bonsai subject.
After 10 years of growth, a mature specimen will measure 4 feet (1.3 m) tall by 2 feet (60 cm) wide, an annual growth rate of 4 to 6 inches (10 - 15 cm). Plants that are allowed to grow "free range" rather than take part in a routine shearing/pruning program will grow much larger and somewhat rangier. 'Reis Dwarf' is definitely best for the "hands-on" gardener.
This cultivar originated as a seedling selected in the mid-1970s by Joe Reis of Merritt, Long Island, New York.
