Along the dangerous Leh Manali Highway, (where I never thought to travel in my life, but I just did it) it is possible to find several stunning landscape sights, in the middle of the himalayan mountains, like this one. I guess it is a paradise for a geologists, for sure, it is for landscape photographers.

It was a lovely cold and clear day today and we went for a drive to Narkanda,some 70 kms from here.There has been fresh snowfall on the peaks and they were sparkling white today.This is a view of the peaks from Fagu some 20 kms from Shimla.The building with the red roof is the Hotel Apple Blossom of the Himachal tourism department.

Northern India is at the moment reeling under unprecedented heavy rain and floods.The worst affected state is Himachal Pradesh where many lives have been lost and property worth crores of rupees has been washed away.I have spoken to my friends there and thankfully their families are safe.
The results of mindless development ,unplanned construction activity and blatant neglect of the warning signs of nature is now visible to us.Sadly in my country I don't think it will make any difference in the future.We will blindly go on just as we have been till now regardless of consequences.
This is a photo of Sangla valley , a remote and beautiful valley in Kinnaur district of Himachal Pradesh,India. The average altitude of this valley is around 10000 feet.The River Baspa flows through this valley famous for its mesmerising beauty,its picturesque villages,its forests of deodar and birch and its apple orchards.

Sarahan ,a very pretty little town some 170 kms from Shimla ,was once the capital of the Bushahr kingdom.Later the capital was shifted to Rampur.Sarahan (altitude around 10000 feet) is situated a little off the main Shimla-Kinnaur highway and is also known as the Gateway to Kinnaur.It is a very picturesque place surrounded by pretty little villages and apple orchards and commands magnificent views of the snow-capped Himalayas.The town contains some very beautiful specimens of hill architecture.
Although Sarahan is not as popular as regular tourist destinations like Shimla or Manali I personally feel it is one of the prettiest places in Himachal.
The lush green Kangra valley dotted with picturesque little hamlets,meandering streams,tea gardens and the breathtaking backdrop of the Dhauladhar ranges is one of the most beautiful places in Himachal especially in springtime.I took this shot when I hardly knew how to use my camera but even my ignorance has not been able to disguise the enchanting beauty of this valley.
We are off to Mathura for a week hence I will be absent for a few days friends.See you all soon and take care.:-)
Barot valley is a remote and picturesque little valley near the town of Jogindernagar in Mandi district of Himachal Pradesh.The Uhl river flows through this valley famous for its beautiful villages,its forests of deodar,oak and rhododendron and its trout farms.It is still an offbeat tourist destination and I fervently hope it remains so for some time.
Early morning in Nako village of Hangrang valley,district Kinnaur in the state of Himachal. Altitude 11893 feet.This village is famous for its Buddhist monastery dating back to 1025 AD and a small lake.Apples,potatoes and dried apricots are it's produce.I spent a night here in September 2014 while on work in this area.I remember the beauty and tranquillity of this place and the clarity of the atmosphere. While I was taking an after dinner stroll the lights suddenly went off for some time. I happened to look up at the sky and it looked as if I could just reach out and touch the stars.It is experiences and memories like these that I cherish from our three year sojourn in Himachal. :-)

The morning trails in any mountain is always an awesome experience. The Hue and the colours draws a lot of attention and are beautiful to capture through the lenses.
This is one from the archives.A shot taken with my very old Sony on a long ago work related trip to the beautiful Chamba valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh.That is a corner of the reservoir of a dam across the River Ravi, one of the 5 rivers of the Punjab. It was a dull day and I was in a hurry but the scene was dreamlike and I did stop for couple of shots. The altitude of Chamba valley is over 3000 feet. Hence those mountains in the background would be approx. 8000 - 9000 feet in height.
I am really longing to be in the mountains again.:-)
A makeshift bridge made of wooden planks across the River Uhl in remote Barot valley in Mandi district in the state of Himachal Pradesh ,India.You can see the remains of an older bridge probably built by the British during the colonial era.
Barot is a village developed in the 1920s by the British for the Shanan Hydel project on the Uhl River.It is situated in an extremely remote and picturesque little valley about 25 kms off the Mandi-Jogindernagar highway in Himachal Pradesh.The valley is watered by the Uhl River and is famous for trout breeding.There are forests of Deodar,Oak and Rhododendron and pretty little villages surrounded by terraced fields which were golden with ripening wheat when we visited in April 2016..Barot is at a distance of about 40 kms from the town of Jogindernagar but the British had also built a funicular trolley which reduces the distance to 12 kms.However the trolley ,as far as I could gather ,is no londger functional.
Barot is at the moment an off-beat tourist destination and I fervently hope it remains so at least for a few more years.

Giu,a remote village in Spiti valley in the state of Himachal Pradesh,altitude around 10000 feet above sea level,near the Indo-Tibet border.It is famous for a naturally preserved mummy of a Buddhist monk around 550 years old.A visit to this village makes you feel as if time has stood still.The clarity of the atmosphere at that altitude can be gauged from the deep blue of the sky.This beautiful village with its simple but friendly Buddhist inhabitants was like a slice of heaven.:-)
We lived in Shimla,the capital of the mountain state of Himachal Pradesh from June 2013 to July 2016.In my opinion Himachal is the most beautiful state of India.During the weekends my husband Sanjay and I would often pack a few sandwiches and a flask of tea and take short trips into the lovely countryside in and around Shimla on our Enfield Bullet.In the mountains every turn of the road brings new scenes of beauty before your eyes.What I remember with great nostalgia are the little villages tucked away on the mountainsides.They would look even more picturesque when picked out by the early morning or late afternoon sunlight like this one.
I had uploaded a slightly different version of this shot long back but I thought my new Flickr friends would enjoy this one.:-)

We used to pass by this cluster of houses whenever I travelled from Shimla to the districts of Kangra or Hamirpur for work.I found the combination of traditional slate-roofed cottages and modern architecture very fascinating as well as picturesque.I took this shot on my last trip to that area.It was a beautiful evening in early spring and if you look carefully you can see some of the residents enjoying the last rays of sunshine on their terraces.I hope my friends enjoy this scene as much as I did.:-)

Tabo Chos-Khor Monastery, founded in 996 CE in the small town of Tabo at an altitude of 10,760 ft in the Lahaul and Spiti district of Himachal Pradesh, India. Rich in priceless collections of thankas (scroll paintings), manuscripts, statues, frescos and extensive murals, it is the Ajanta of the Himalayas. Principally of Gelugpa sect, this was once an important seat of Mahayana Buddhism though Tantric Buddhism rites are also performed here.
