Mount Kailash is a holy mountain for both Hindus and Buddhist. The mountain lies in southern part of Tibet. Mount Kailas is separated from the Great Himalayas chain by a trough that is drained in the northwest by the Sutlej River and in the southeast by the Yarlung Zangbo River (the extreme upper Brahmaputra River ). Mapam Lake , lying just south of Mount Kailash at 4,557 m (14,950 ft), is one of the world's highest lakes. Every year, thousands make a pilgrimage to Kailash, following a tradition going back thousands of years. Pilgrims of several religions believe that circumambulating Mount Kailash on foot is a holy ritual that will bring good fortune. The peregrination is made in a clockwise direction by Hindus and Buddhists. The path around Mount Kailash is 52 km.

With regular cycles providing easy reverse launches, you could not ask for a more picturesque site.

The area has always been an important water catchment area, supplying the Kathmandu Valley daily with several hundred thousands cubic liter of water. In 1976, the area was established as a protected watershed and wildlife reserve. In 2002, it was gazetted as Shivapuri National Park, initially covering 144 km2, and extended by the Nagarjun Forest Reserve in early 2009 to its present size.
The park is located in a transition zone between subtropical and temperate climate. The annual precipitation of about 1,400 mm falls mostly from May to September, with 80% during monsoon. Temperatures vary from 2-17°C (36-63° F) during the winter season, rising to 19-30°C (66-86° F) during the summer season.
The Annapurna Base Camp trekking route is also known as the Annapurna sanctuary trek.
