Mont Blanc is the highest mountain in the Alps and the highest in Europe after the Caucasus peaks. It rises 4,808 m (15,774 ft) above sea level and is ranked 11th in the world in topographic prominence. Between the regions of Aosta Valley, Italy, and Savoie and Haute-Savoie, France. The location of the summit is on the watershed line between the valleys of Ferret and Veny in Italy and the valleys of Montjoie, and Arve in France. The Mont Blanc massif is popular for mountaineering, hiking, skiing, and snowboarding.

The three towns and their communes which surround Mont Blanc are Courmayeur in Aosta Valley, Italy, and Saint-Gervais-les-Bains and Chamonix in Haute-Savoie, France. The latter town was the site of the first Winter Olympics. A cable car ascends and crosses the mountain range from Courmayeur to Chamonix, through the Col du Géant. Constructed beginning in 1957 and completed in 1965, the 11.6 km (7¼ mi) Mont Blanc Tunnel runs beneath the mountain between these two countries and is one of the major trans-Alpine transport routes.

With some of the tallest line side poles I've ever seen along the D&RGW, Rio Grande's Railblazer, train No. 103, blasts its Nathan P3 airhorn for eight consecutive grade crossings through the small town Lehi, Utah at 8:16 a.m. on July 29, 1989. Overheard between the train toots were the sound of horses and chickens excited for the arrival of the zippy little sprint train.

It's rare to find Scafell Pike, Scafell and Helvellyn (England's three highest mountains) in the same picture, but .....

There I was, somewhere on the ridge between Causey Pike and Scar Crags, taking some twilight views, when it seemed like a good idea to blend some of them together in camera, so that's what I did.

Scafell Pike and Scafell (separated by Great Gable) are just right of centre in the back row, while Helvellyn is slightly to the left of centre two rows in front. In reality, the Scafells lie about 8 miles south and Helvellyn about 7.5 miles east south east from where I stood...

The magic of photography!

Well, looks like the snow could be back here in London again tomorrow, just in time for the weekend...Yahhh..:O))))

At least Saturday will be clear with some sun, so if the snow is still around, should we get some..then I will be able to get better shots then this one, as it was a dull grey day...with snow and Blizzards as you can see, so it would be great to have better lighting..:O)))

Anyhoo...as I keep saying, stay warm if you are somewhere cold...and have a great rest of the week...:O)))

Hyde Park Sunset - Sturday January 12th 2008.

I can't wait for this to open at Hudson Yard, called "The Edge" it's the highest observation deck in the western hemisphere at 1,100 ft and scheduled to open Spring 2020. The views must be great and you can even lean out on the 9 foot glass wall that juts out into the sky! As seen the New York City hike with Mathias, aka., m_laRs_k.

According to traditional sources of Saint Nino, who converted Georgia to Christianity, he stopped to pray on the highest hill Mtskheta and put the cross on him. In the 6th century, it was built in the place of two churches belonging to the monastery. The second - larger church was built between 586 - 605.

This church served as a model for the construction of other temples. The importance of the monastery grew with the passage of time and attracts many pilgrims. Also today, Great Church is used during major events. There are also fragments of the cross of St. Nino.

He is now included on the list of one hundred most endangered destruction of monuments of the world and UNESCO World Heritage List in 1994 as "Historical Monuments of Mtskheta".

-

Leaning haphazardly against each other, this rock formation towers over the Wadi Rum visitor centre. It proceeds to a gradual peak with the highest pillar at its front. The clear, rounded shapes of the pillars standing side-by-side allowed it to inherit its name. Because of it shapes, this mountain look like many things. A collection of lopsided pillars, a procession of figures fanned out behind their leader, the bulwark of a great ship sailing through an ocean of sand. The modern name is taken from TE Lawrence’s memoir of his time in the desert. Though only five of these pillars are immediately visible, the other two are around the side. It is possible to walk around the formation but the best view is from a distance near the visitor centre. The original Arabic name is Jebel al-Mazmar, which means “The Mountain of the Plague.”

This site is one of the most amazing hiking spots in the area. The trail is one of stark contrasts: on one side, flat sands spread long distances, the very picture of the dry, yellow desert of the imagination in summer. In winter and spring, it is scattered with low grasses and bushes that animals come to graze on. Keep your eyes peeled and you might even spot a camel or two! On the other side, the mountain leaps from the ground in a sheer wall of sandstone and granite. A walk along the base of the rock is done easily at your own pace. Upon approaching the foot of this majestic mountain, tilt your head back and take in the enormity of the pillars. Massive as big-city skyscrapers, these natural formations speak of something ancient. A testament to this place and its withstanding thousands of years of both human and environmental turmoil.

FROM WIKIPEDIA:

Bruneau Dunes is a state park in Idaho, featuring several large sand dunes and two small lakes.

The park is located south of Mountain Home, Idaho, outside of Bruneau. The park is the site of North America's highest single-structured sand dune which is approximately 470 feet (140 m) high. The park is also the site of the Bruneau Dunes Observatory, where visitors can use a telescope for stargazing.

The highest mountain in Perthshire, Schiehallion. This mystical p[eak in the distance's name translates from Gaelic as "The Fairy Hill of The North." Legend has it that there are caves in the mountain that lead to the underworld. Folk legends have countless stories of intrepid travellers who went seeking the caves and were never to be seen again. I may go in search myself hoping not to come back to this crappy Corona world.

Macro Mondays : The Space In between.

The bell of a snowdrop between the outer leaves.

Taken on a recent visit to Kingston Lacy national trust in Dorset.

I did manage to get close despite the windy conditions as these plants are small and wanted to concentrate on the bell of the flower hence the f3.5 setting used as the focal point as this was filling in the space between the outer leaves. It was a relatively strong windy day so ended up taking several hundred just to get a few dozen that were in focus.
