Fun on the escalators at Library of Birmingham. I took about a gazillion of these but this one stood out due to the punchy surroundings that give it a retro feel.
Shift Return ... and now I am on a new paragraph. One of the many quirks of the new Flickr *ahem* experience. I was rather surprised by all the black Flickr pages on the 8th. A few simple changes could have made the new interface so much more user friendly whilst maintaining that much needed update. Part of me wonders why I am even writing such a lengthy description given you are going to have to choose to read it.
Thank you all for your kind messages etc. My son has made a speedy recovery and now has no cast on his arm and I have a new car - insurance company rather surprisingly gave me more than expected so have actually done okay out of it all. Anyway, I expect to be back on Flickr properly in the New Year. Whilst I have not had time to comment I have very much enjoyed looking at all your work.

MERRY CHRISTMAS FLICKRITES!
Hightech meets 'Oldtech'. Luckily we still have these Dietz No1 Petro lamps. The motors on the new SpaceX Starlink Internet Dish locked up during the recent -42°C bout.
This dish turns and tilts to optimal reception as needed, currently pointing mostly North into some trees we may have to remove come summer.
So far the performance of the service has been a mixed bag. Lots of short interruptions during the day and mostly working great at night especially for large downloads and software updates that took forever on the previous system.
There is just one satellite track overhead at a time, with gaps and offset on how they appear. This should improve by summer.
Our previous stationary satellite service [xplornet] could end any time now, as the satellite used [Telesat Anik F2] has reached end of life. At the moment we pay for both and that is an expensive luxury, albeit necessary until the new service works reliably.

Various sneaky ways of throttling depending on traffic or own usage. Relative stable overall, downloads needed to be done at night after 1:00am.
SpaceX Starlink Service:
Low Earth Satellite Mesh with Laser Interlinks and many more ground stations. Very good coverage down south, with limited satellites in the Polar regions so far. In our location there is usually just one satellite track overhead or on the edges of reception. The satellites also seem to be spaced further apart so that there are a lot of short link outages at the moment. This will improve by summer with more satellites in the Polar orbit.
There is no real bandwidth limit, but if one reaches 1TB they might throttle the speed depending on load.
Can$147 per month. Dish/Router is owned at Can$699 + shipping.
1TB monthly allowance. After that 0.32 CAD per GB
Advertised speed for fixed residential: 20-100Mbps Down, 5-15Mbps Up
Latency: 25-50ms
Downloads at night are super-fast and don't count towards the 1TB limit. Finally don't have to keep a constant eye on our usage! Worst time with the outages is between 17:00 hour and 20:30, maybe because a lot of folks are on it after work.
Overall a much better deal, that will improve with more satellites and tech improvements.

The next-generation cargo ship has been designed for ArianeGroup to meet the complex requirements of Ariane 6 transport – the stages and engines of Ariane 6 are high-tech equipment that require care during transport.
The Ariane 6 launcher elements are manufactured in mainland Europe and then transported by a novel ship called Canopée (canopy in French) to Europe’s spaceport in French Guiana. The ship is the first custom-built transporter to use sails, reducing emissions and saving on fuel by up to 30%.

Im Emsland in einer ehemaluigen Hightech Produktionsstätte (Transrapid) hatten wir unseren Urlaub / Besichtigungen begonnen und nen Steinwurf entfernt in der Meyer Werft endet dieser Urlaub. Gut möglich das mal eine Reise mit so einem Riesen Schiff ansteht :-)

A few minutes after sunset, the lights come on on the Bay Bridge; a section at a time. It's really an amazing sight to a rube from LA. I'm sure the people who drive back and forth on the Bay Bridge or up and down the Embarcadero every day don't get the same charge out of it I did.
A couple of HighTech grads stacked together really "pinked up" the sky and the long exposure flattened out the water nicely.
