Intimidating radiation machine found in the abandoned military hospital, Antwerp, Belgium.

Taken during my very first urbex experience - my cherry - into Antwerp's abandoned military hospital during my big "Things Fall Apart" tour of Western Europe in 2005 (after 4 years I have still not been able to find out the actual name of this hospital - driving me crazy). I got locked inside this place twice, if you can believe it. The first time in the evening as a storm was approaching, and I ended up having to wait inside an orthodox Hebrew primary school with two Polish cleaning ladies who told me (it turned out otherwise, thank god) that they (and I) were locked inside the school until 8 in the morning. The second time was the time this pic was taken. A wing of this hospital is still active, used for caring for WWII war vets, and the gate for the abandoned part is inside the gate for the active part. I just walked in both gates early in the morning of Belgium's national holiday, and returned to the inner gate a half hour later to check on it and found it closed and locked. Eventually I found a building that bordered on the parking lot of the active wing, and found the one window that wasn't barred and was openable. One of my proudest moments in life was not just bolting at that point. I turned around, went back into the depths of the complex, and finished my photos for another couple of hours. Then I bolted. :-)

Frederic Remington (1861–1909) was an American painter, illustrator, sculptor, and writer. He had a great interest in the American Old West, concentrating on the image of cowboys, Native Americans, horses, and the US cavalry. He rose to prominence with interpretations of frontier life, with many of his illustrations published in popular journals such as Harper’s Weekly and Pearson’s Magazine. His nocturnal paintings were filled with color and light, moonlight, firelight, and candlelight. We have digitally enhanced some of the paintings from this American artist, and they are free for you to enjoy under the Creative Commons 0 license.

Introducing the third installment of The Shop's popular photocopy noise textures, the photocopy noise texture pack volume 03!

This time, the set features twenty-nine (29) base textures. They were printed using an unhappy laser copier, low on toner. Then, they were scratched, creased, crumpled, rubbed, and scraped, to unveil some lovely wear patterns. The wear ranged from soft, subtle, all the way to nuclear devastation.

After that analog processing, the textures were scanned in at 1,200 ppi, adjusted for lighting in Photoshop, and then converted to 18"x24" @ 300 ppi documents. They are crisp as a winter morning.

Each texture is available in a positive (mostly black), and negative (mostly white) version.

Additionally, the set features each textures as transparent PNGs (ideal to quickly add in a design, and to color them using a color overlay), and bitmap TIFFs (perfect to use in Illustrator for great, detailed texture effects without hogging down your system resources).

Noise and dust textures are perfect to add a subtle depth to your designs. Using them is very simple: just switch your layer's blending mode to "Screen," and play with the opacity slider.

So far this is my favorite of the series.

The technique is explained here.

Amsterdam photo of urban art in ceramic tiles - I saw this decoration several times a month for a long period. Suddenly it convinced me to picture it. An unknown wall-decoration of an unknown early graphic designer from Amsterdam, created around the 1980's - made in ceramic tiles. Just a decoration in a small remote alley.

I like the contrasts an the dynamic points of the leave-forms, in the direction to the door.

Durga Puja - the ceremonial worship of the supremely radiant mother goddess, is one of the most important festivals, is celebrated every year in the month of October with much gaiety and grandeur in India and abroad, especially in Bengal, where the ten-armed goddess riding the lion and killing the Buffalo-Demon (Mahishasura) is worshiped with great passion and devotion. In Durga, the Gods bestowed their powers to co-create a beautiful goddess with ten arms, each carrying their most lethal weapon. The tableau of Durga also features her four children - Kartikeya, Ganesha, Saraswati and Lakshmi.

Ralph Waldo Emerson. The happiest man is he who learns from nature the lesson of worship.

Lucius Annaeus Seneca: On entering a temple we assume all signs of reverence. How much more reverent then should we be before the heavenly bodies, the stars, the very nature of God!

John Muir: All the wild world is beautiful, and it matters but little where we go, to highlands or lowlands, woods or plains, on the sea or land or down among the crystals of waves or high in a balloon in the sky; through all the climates, hot or cold, storms and calms, everywhere and always we are in God's eternal beauty and love. So universally true is this, the spot where we chance to be always seems the best.

Born in London, Paul Nash (1889–1946) grew up in Buckinghamshire before enrolling at the Slade School of Fine Art. During his studies, he honed his skills in landscape painting drawing inspiration from ancient and historic landscapes. He was appointed England's official war artist during both World Wars. After the wars, Nash continued to paint landscapes but had shifted from a formalized style to a more abstract and surreal style. He often incorporated everyday objects into his landscape artworks to give them a new identity and symbolic meaning. Nash was also a contributing member of Unit One, a group of British artists who wanted to promote avant-garde art in England. We've curated some of his finest public domain artworks in this collection for you to enjoy and download under the CC0 license.
