In this view from late April 1984, it may be springtime in Denver and other parts of the country, but up here at East Portal, Colorado, at over 9,000 feet in elevation, winter still reigns supreme. A westbound Rio Grande freight fights wind and blowing snow as it curves past East Portal siding as it approaches the Moffat Tunnel in a high country blizzard.
Inge and Louis are strangers number 2 and 3. They were having a fantastic time taking photos high above the Los Angeles skyline. They are both on holiday from Belgium.

No stranger to these rails, a former Soo Line SD60 curves through the beautiful bluff country of the northern Mississippi River watershed just south of Lansing, Iowa with a train of loaded auto racks bound for Kansas City.
