Thinking about this week's Crazy Tuesday theme of "Trees and Leaves"and while our trees are just getting underway, the leaves seem to be turning brown and dropping at the same time. The jury's still out on a nice colorful Fall but we'll see in the upcoming days/weeks. I love the look of the hickory tree with it's compound leaf but I've already posted one of the leaflets so I needed something a bit different. I looked around the yard and this one grouping caught my eye. A hickory leaf with 3 leaflets, all brown but loaded with character (IMO), I knew it would be all about the lighting and this has a main light to the left and above camera, additional fill to the right and a bit from the back-top for a hair light. The grouping measures about 5 in. tall X 4 in. wide X 2 in. deep. I was hoping for a B&W conversion but the brown color won out in the end.

A seed that survived winter, with parts of the husk still close by. It was lying on top of a dead tree (another hickory I guess) with moss growing on it.

Well the nuts are starting to fall and the there are a few leaves starting to come down. While it's way too early to start thinking about Fall this leaf seems stuck between the two seasons. I also liked the look of it and wanted to try something with stacking. I upped the number of layers to try and reduce the blurry areas that I seem to get when areas of different focal distances overlap. This leaf had a number of over lapping areas and quite a lot of depth to render at f/8. 32 layers were shot to get the leaf in focus from front to back. Still would up with some trouble spots but not too bad and the texture is great. Even has a little orange something riding along.

Southbound X539 emerges from Hickory Tunnel #2 over Hickory Creek just outside of Morley, Tennessee.
I liked the contrast of color on the dock and the grass seed heads ..it would have been complete with a harvest mouse, but the cat is busy with population control.
This time of year I find little holes in the yard from squirrels digging up their hidden bounty of hickory nuts that they stashed in the Fall. One of the holes had this piece of a nut nearby and the weathering caught my eye.

Grinding out of Hickory Creek Tunnel # 2, CSXT 450 South makes it’s assault on Duff Mountain with loaded company grain train G161-15. Today in the form of CSXT 446, the Morley pusher was added on the rear in Corbin and is definitely needed here as the grade reaches up to 1.31%.
