I went for my first walk yesterday after my hernia surgery on Monday and came across this beauty. Peace Valley Park, New Britain PA.

We called him stubby. He has only a partial tail obviously nabbed in a fight or something..
I want to take this time to thank ALL that sent me Flickr mail and comments on my stream during my absence. I felt sooo honored that so many worried about my well being. I'm very healthy! I just spent time doing other things I'm interested in. I try not be one-dimensional. It’s important for me to diversify my interests.
I did bugger both shoulders building a shed and re-doing my garage, but other than that and having hernia surgery after my Canada trip I'm as healthy as a ole horse. Not ready for pasture yet, but slowing down a bit. It's hard aging unless you have hobbies and a reason to get up in the morning. So many have shared so much on Flickr and I believe this is a forum of interaction and getting to know one another and our lives that connect us through our photography addiction.
So, to those of you that posted your concerns about my whereabouts, and health, not to worry...but it so honoring and much appreciated. Thank you all soo very much for caring about this ole guy!!!
Make it a great day my dear friends, as it is a choice!!
Won't be on much in the next few weeks, had hernia surgery yesterday and won't be able to get out for at least 6 weeks. I may try and post some of my older images but right now I'm not in the mood for it. I'll see how I feel in a few days.

The first short photo walk in 2023 did not last long. The aftermath of hernia surgery forced me to only tackle a short loop near where I live. I knew the narrow, somewhat icy path from earlier walks and I have already taken a few photos here. Depending on the season and the weather, there are always new pretty motifs. Today I was attracted not only by the contrast between the light meadow and the dark hedge, but also by the bare tree and the fence covered in hoarfrost. The photo gives me cold and warmth at the same time - a winter photo without snow.
More photos and reports from my photo walks, tours and trips:
I went for a walk this evening... not far, just around the yard and down into what used to be our old horse pasture (now a burgeoning orchard). I can still remember what this spot was like over 25 years ago.
I was about 9 or 10 when Dad started clearing the brush on this hillside in the middle of the woods. He built the barn first before he built our house. I remember an old green canvas army tent set up under some shade trees in what would later become our yard. Somedays Dad would work until after dark and sleep in the tent so he'd be ready to start again the next day as soon as the sun was up. I was 12 when we finally moved in to the basement of our unfinished house. I don't think I realized at the time that most other kids' Dads hadn't built their houses with their bare hands (my Dad built both the homes I grew up in). I still feel a swell of pride when I think back and remember how hard he worked to build a life for us here.
Today was my first trip back home this summer. It hasn't been the easiest summer for us. After Mom's cancer diagnosis, surgeries, and radiation treament... and now Dad's double hernia surgery, I think they're both a little weary. But I know that everything's going to be fine. I think we're all a lot like that barn... maybe a little weathered on the outside, but still sturdy and built rock solid.
That's how I feel becauseI just had an endoscopy and the results came back all good! ;
Been through a lot through 2016 and the start of this year....I had to have two different cancer surgeries ampulla of vater , a rare cancer.
Then, breast cancer at the start of this year, and rare, Spigelian hernia surgery...God has been with me through all of it and I can testify that even if you go through difficult times and sometimes life threatening ordeals, if you ask God to help you he will give you the strength to get through it!
From the Archives
Sitting around my house recovering from my double hernia surgery (going well thank you) and going through my archives looking for the strange, offbeat, personal, or merely weird. And yes, I'm off the narcotics.
My first time out in a long time. Pain from hernia surgery a year and a half ago is still kicking my butt. Chasing birds around the park made me forget about it for a while though. It was nice to get out of the house.

Just a random candid portrait of a child taken at the "Meijer Games" in June of 2014. I love the way that he is looking at me. and of course his hair.
I have been going through a lot of archives lately as I have recently had hernia surgery. I am not getting around to good as my stomach aches every time I stretch it a bit. Can't wait for this to be done so I can get out there and make some new photos.

Brooks Rupture Appliance Co. Building, 310 East Michigan Avenue, Marshall, Michigan. The Brooks Rupture Appliance Company was founded in 1880 by Charles E. Brooks. In 1912, Harold C. Brooks took over his father’s business. This company manufactured appliances (ie. special cushions) for people, mainly men, suffering from hernias. These cushions held the ruptured muscle or tissue in place to alleviate hernia pain in the era before hernia surgery was developed. The company was in business in this building until 2003.
Larry fashioned these two pieces of board with a rough finish that won't slide on our metal, standing seam porch roof, to put the ladder up to reach the 3rd floor roof.
Last week, a day after the tragedy, Larry announced that he was going to put the Christmas lights up on the 3rd floor roof.
I was horrified.
It's Larry's M.O. to keep himself busy during difficult times like this, but he was pretty shaky, and there was NO WAY I was going to let him climb a ladder! I'm not thrilled about him doing this job on a "normal" day.
As far as I was concerned we could just do without the lights on top of the house this year.
Larry, however, felt differently, and I was only able to postpone the job for a week.
He insisted on going up there this past weekend, He's having hernia surgery this a.m., and wanted to get it done before he'd be 'out of service".
Now my full time job for the next week or so, will to be to sit on him and not let him get up and do things he shouldn't be doing.
People are telling me, Oh! That should be easy. He'll be in some pain and it will hurt for him to be moving around."
To these people I say, "You do NOT know Larry!"
I might need duct tape and super glue to keep him down!

The building, originally alled the Union Trust building is Detroit's downtown art deco treasure, once referred to as the "Cathedral of Finance".
Downtown Today after my 10 day checkup after my hernia surgery. Wanted to go back almost 3 years later with better gear and see what I could do. Both improved greatly IMHO.
The Guardian Building, designated a National Historic Landmark on June 29, 1989, is a skyscraper in downtown Detroit, Michigan. Today, the building is owned by Wayne County, Michigan and serves as its headquarters. Built in 1928 and finished in 1929, the building was originally called the Union Trust Building and is a bold example of Art Deco architecture, including art moderne designs.

This is Bill. Bill is standing on a hill.
Bill is 80.
Apparently Burger King could not find any red G's.
or N's
We did find one white I laying on the side of this sign a few days ago while Pancake was doing her recycling side job (picking up plastic bottles).
Bill has a sweetheart in the Carolinas.
Bill is pretending to look mean here.
It took 4 attempts to get this photo as *somebody's* finger kept obstructing the viewfinder. This was not an easy photo to capture. Bill was smiling for the first three. He's a good actor.
Bill was born in St. Mary Elizabeth hospital here in Louisville, KY. He was drafted during the Cuban missile crisis (aka the "Cold War") in 1961. He gets frustrated when I cannot remember which war he was in as we've had so many (nonstop). He now wears a cap which says, "Cold War Veteran". He went to boot camp at Ft. Knox, Kentucky. He then spent 2 years in Nuremberg (Illesheim) trucking fuel and liquid nitrogen for L-19's. He also repaired H-13 wings - a skill he learned growing up and working on a tobacco farm as a child, Both these aircraft were used as surveillance aircraft. Once discharged, he says he "kept on truckin" as an independent trucker throughout the USA, along with his dog who'd always stayed by his side. Bill is getting coaching on diet and exercise and is very active in life. It is an honor and privilege to have met him and continues to be. Bill is a very smart man and a lot of fun interacting with.
In 2014, Bill's van was broadsided by a 30 year old male drunk driver who did not have auto insurance. Bill then sued him to recoup the $2,225 in damages to the van. The man has been paying Bill $25 per month to recoup those damages.
26 January 2019 Bill relayed to me an incident he'd had when he was a child, age eleven. While playing with a boyhood friend, his friend was showing him his big brother's gun. His friend's big brother was in the Army. His friend was showing him gun safety, and how to take the magazine in and out. His friend showed him how the gun could be shot and nothing would happen with the magazine out. His friend forgot one bullet would remain in the chamber once the magazine was removed. The gun discharged and the bullet went through Bill's stomach and exited through his back, piercing his internal organs. Bill had many surgeries to fix that, and was in the hospital for three months the first time. He said the gunshot propelled him against the wall and dropped him. He said he did not feel anything but saw he was shot. His friend called the police and the paramedics took him to the hospital. He now has quite a few scars from those surgeries. Yet he was drafted anyway. Bill said during the Cuban Missile Crisis no one was turned away or rejected in the draft.
***************Taco Bell Incident************************************
On 20 January 2019 as Bill was returning from the V.A. Hospital after a long morning of pre-op bloodwork and diagnostic imaging (they're planning a hernia surgery for him), he stopped for a quick bite to eat. My service dog, Pancake and I met him there. That did not go well. The "Service Champion" at the counter advised us we had to leave. Why? Because he said service dogs were not permitted in the restaurant. Why? Because their General Manager was allergic to dogs. She then, also, told us to leave the restaurant. A discussion ensued. Bill called the police. The nice officer said we have to leave if a restaurant does not want someone there (the service dog). Bill was not happy. Pancake attempted to jump into Officer Paine's car while Bill and he were speaking. She did not get shot. We left. Bill, exhausted by the altercation and previous testing, went home.
I returned to Taco Bell. Discussion ensued. The General Manager apologized after speaking with her Coach. She stated she had three kids and did not feel well. The "Service Champion" stood back with arms crossed but did not speak. They do not know Bill has never been married and has never had the opportunity to have children. They do not know Bill spends the majority of his time between his Church helping the children there (he says he has 400 of them) as well as spending a good deal of his time with the Knights of Columbus and other charitable causes. They only knew their General Manager was allergic to dogs. Well, so am I. They did not know the law. They do now.
Bill says he expects to live until at least 100 as did the majority of his family. He could be right (hopefully if he chooses his Taco Bells and menu items wisely).
**************************************************************************
Update on Taco Bell incident - Received a call from Jenny Byrne, an area Coach from Taco Bell, and we agreed to meet at our local McDonalds. There we discussed what had transpired and Jenny did something no one else has ever done. She took ownership of the unfortunate incident and made it better. Jenny is an angel. I'd also mentioned to Jenny the young man who stands out front of our local Meijer's frequently, close to Taco Bell. She said yes, she sees him. I asked her if she knew he was a US Navy Veteran with two young children - his name is Troy. His two children are staying with their grandmother. I asked Jenny if she saw the sign he was holding which said he was looking for work. I asked Jenny if she would consider going outside and ask him if he would like a job with their company. Time will tell.

Mr. Bill is at jury duty this week. He chose jury duty over a hernia surgery. He said it is his civic duty to appear and he said it is the right thing to do. Bill also spends a great deal of his time visiting the sick and those who've been admitted to hospitals, including Rachel, a manager at Burger King who was seriously injured when she was hit by a drunk driver.
*************
Bill suffered a great personal loss recently with the death of one of his dearest friends, John Thomas Richart, a US Coast Guard veteran: www.newcomerkentuckiana.com/Obituary/173956/John-Richart/...
Bill also needed help with a simple task of getting a microwave oven mounted in his kitchen.
************
Bill hopes to be remembered as the "coolest 80 year old" out there. He has a lot of competition out there. He may win the men's title. He's abandoned Burger king in favor of Hardees.
***********
Update: June 17, 2021: Ran into Bill today and he is cool as ever. Looks like he has yet to secure himself a handicapped hang tag for his car, so he doesn't walk too far. He is self-proclaimed "Pancake's Grandfather" and rightfully so. He says he has a birthday coming up next week - he either is or will be 82. Maybe he'll be 83. He has now abandoned Burger King & Hardees and is having much healthier breakfasts opting for Wild Eggs, a much better choice. I updated him on Pancake's whereabouts and he was happy to learn she is alive and well. I was happy to learn he is alive and well also.
***************
Update: March 13, 2022: Saw Bill today and he looks fantastic sporting his "Army Transportation" cap. He carries with him a golden Cross pen he says his Mom gave him when he got his first tractor-trailer job and started doing business as an over-the-road truck driver. His name is engraved - it s indeed a beautiful pen.
He seemed to enjoy meeting and trading stories with a local realtor working here in our sub-development - Melanie Crane - she was in the Army stationed in Germany as well. He also met my next-door neighbor, Don, who was in the Air Force reserves. Bill says he will be 84 this June and also enjoys going to his local Church where he is very active. He can be boisterous and a tad disruptive at times, yet is a fun, energetic octogenarian wherever he goes - especially when on coffee. He says he eats breakfast at home now.

As of today, March 11, 2023, Mr. Bond is unaccounted for. Some in the neighborhood say they haven't seen him in a year. Rachel from Burger King said someone went to go check on him at home and his car & van were both there but no one answered his door. He isn't returning any phone calls. I'm hoping he either found yet another sweetheart or has finally went on the Honor Flight he was hoping to go on one day. We're keeping an eye out for him. Unsure whether this warrants a home check on him. At 84 he's pretty spry.
****
After speaking with a few local people who new Mr. Bond, it was agreed a well-check might be in order. I was given the number for LMPD non-emergency and connected with an Offficer Schekley (sp?) this afternoon (March 12,2023). In less than 2 hrs. I received a call back from LMPD who relayed the message "your friend is fine" and quite a fun guy. She was giggling. Ok, yup, that's Mr. Bond! Alive and well although I did not personally see him this should be the right one.
****
Update: Nov.29, 2023
Saw Mr. Bond today for a short time, He is alive and well at 85. He still enjoys working with the children at Church and still has a charming smile. He mentioned Rachel no longer works at Burger King and has an adopted granddaughter he looks in on. We played some songs on his keyboard and he is looking into doing karaoke as well. He is quite talented and I enjoyed the keyboard immensely.
*****
Update: Nov. 11, 2023
Although I did not see Mr. Bond yet this year, I did speak with him today as it was Veteran's Day. He was sharing his day with other veterans at Mission BBQ. He invited me to join him and I sadly declined. He sounds as spry and bubbly as always, even at a young 86. I am hoping to catch up with him soon.
*****
Update: May 8, 2025
Although I did not see Mr. Bond this year yet, I did have the pleasure of speaking with him and he sounds great, and was out having lunch with his friend.

During the late 16th and 17th centuries in France, male impotence was considered a crime, as well as legal grounds for a divorce. The practice, which involved inspection of the complainants by court experts, was declared obscene in 1677. John R. Brinkley initiated a boom in male impotence cures in the U.S. in the 1920s and 1930s. His radio programs recommended expensive goat gland implants and "mercurochrome" injections as the path to restored male virility, including operations by surgeon Serge Voronoff. Modern drug therapy for ED made a significant advance in 1983, when British physiologist Giles Brindley dropped his trousers and demonstrated to a shocked Urodynamics Society audience his papaverine-induced erection. The drug Brindley injected into his penis was a non-specific vasodilator, an alpha-blocking agent, and the mechanism of action was clearly corporal smooth muscle relaxation. The effect that Brindley discovered established the fundamentals for the later development of specific, safe, and orally effective drug therapies.
Erectile dysfunction (ED), also known as impotence, is a type of sexual dysfunction characterized by the inability to develop or maintain an erection of the penis during sexual activity. Erectile dysfunction can have psychological consequences as it can be tied to relationship difficulties and self-image. The most important organic causes of impotence are cardiovascular disease and diabetes, neurological problems (for example, trauma from prostatectomy surgery), hormonal insufficiencies (hypogonadism) and drug side effects. Psychological impotence is where erection or penetration fails due to thoughts or feelings (psychological reasons) rather than physical impossibility; this is somewhat less frequent but can often be helped. In psychological impotence, there is a strong response to placebo treatment. Besides treating the underlying causes such as potassium deficiency or arsenic contamination of drinking water, the first line treatment of erectile dysfunction consists of a trial of PDE5 inhibitor (such as sildenafil). In some cases, treatment can involve prostaglandin tablets in the urethra, injections into the penis, a penile prosthesis, a penis pump or vascular reconstructive surgery. Erectile dysfunction is characterized by the regular or repeated inability to obtain or maintain an erection.
Causes
Medications (antidepressants, such as SSRIs, and nicotine[citation needed] are most common)
Neurogenic disorders
Cavernosal disorders (Peyronie's disease)
Hyperprolactinemia (e.g., due to a prolactinoma)
Psychological causes: performance anxiety, stress, and mental disorders
Surgery
Aging. It is four times more common in men aged in their 60s than those in their 40s.
Kidney failure
Diseases such as diabetes mellitus and multiple sclerosis (MS). While these two causes have not been proven they are likely suspects as they cause issues with both the blood flow and nervous systems. Lifestyle: smoking is a key cause of erectile dysfunction. Smoking causes impotence because it promotes arterial narrowing. Surgical intervention for a number of conditions may remove anatomical structures necessary to erection, damage nerves, or impair blood supply. Erectile dysfunction is a common complication of treatments for prostate cancer, including prostatectomy and destruction of the prostate by external beam radiation, although the prostate gland itself is not necessary to achieve an erection. As far as inguinal hernia surgery is concerned, in most cases, and in the absence of postoperative complications, the operative repair can lead to a recovery of the sexual life of patients with preoperative sexual dysfunction, while, in most cases, it does not affect patients with a preoperative normal sexual life. ED can also be associated with bicycling due to both neurological and vascular problems due to compression. The increase risk appears to be about 1.7-fold. Concerns that use of pornography can cause erectile dysfunction have not been substantiated in epidemiological studies according to a 2015 literature review. However, another review and case studies article maintains that use of pornography does indeed cause erectile dysfunction, and critiques the previously described literature review. Penile erection is managed by two mechanisms: the reflex erection, which is achieved by directly touching the penile shaft, and the psychogenic erection, which is achieved by erotic or emotional stimuli. The former uses the peripheral nerves and the lower parts of the spinal cord, whereas the latter uses the limbic system of the brain. In both cases, an intact neural system is required for a successful and complete erection. Stimulation of the penile shaft by the nervous system leads to the secretion of nitric oxide (NO), which causes the relaxation of smooth muscles of corpora cavernosa (the main erectile tissue of penis), and subsequently penile erection. Additionally, adequate levels of testosterone (produced by the testes) and an intact pituitary gland are required for the development of a healthy erectile system. As can be understood from the mechanisms of a normal erection, impotence may develop due to hormonal deficiency, disorders of the neural system, lack of adequate penile blood supply or psychological problems. Spinal cord injury causes sexual dysfunction including ED. Restriction of blood flow can arise from impaired endothelial function due to the usual causes associated with coronary artery disease, but can also be caused by prolonged exposure to bright light. It is analyzed in several ways: Obtaining full erections at some times, such as nocturnal penile tumescence when asleep (when the mind and psychological issues, if any, are less present), tends to suggest that the physical structures are functionally working. Other factors leading to erectile dysfunction are diabetes mellitus (causing neuropathy). There are no formal tests to diagnose erectile dysfunction. Some blood tests are generally done to exclude underlying disease, such as hypogonadism and prolactinoma. Impotence is also related to generally poor physical health, poor dietary habits, obesity, and most specifically cardiovascular disease such as coronary artery disease and peripheral vascular disease. Therefore, a thorough physical examination is helpful, in particular the simple search for a previously undetected groin hernia since it can affect sexual functions in men and is easily curable. A useful and simple way to distinguish between physiological and psychological impotence is to determine whether the patient ever has an erection. If never, the problem is likely to be physiological; if sometimes (however rarely), it could be physiological or psychological. The current diagnostic and statistical manual of mental diseases (DSM-IV) has included a listing for impotence.
Duplex ultrasound
Duplex ultrasound is used to evaluate blood flow, venous leak, signs of atherosclerosis, and scarring or calcification of erectile tissue. Injecting prostaglandin, a hormone-like stimulator produced in the body, induces the erection. Ultrasound is then used to see vascular dilation and measure penile blood pressure.
Penile nerves function
Tests such as the bulbocavernosus reflex test are used to determine if there is sufficient nerve sensation in the penis. The physician squeezes the glans (head) of the penis, which immediately causes the anus to contract if nerve function is normal. A physician measures the latency between squeeze and contraction by observing the anal sphincter or by feeling it with a gloved finger inserted past the anus.
Nocturnal penile tumescence (NPT)
It is normal for a man to have five to six erections during sleep, especially during rapid eye movement (REM). Their absence may indicate a problem with nerve function or blood supply in the penis. There are two methods for measuring changes in penile rigidity and circumference during nocturnal erection: snap gauge and strain gauge. A significant proportion of men who have no sexual dysfunction nonetheless do not have regular nocturnal erections.
Penile biothesiometry
This test uses electromagnetic vibration to evaluate sensitivity and nerve function in the glans and shaft of the penis.
Dynamic infusion cavernosometry (DICC)
technique in which fluid is pumped into the penis at a known rate and pressure. It gives a measurement of the vascular pressure in the corpus cavernosum during an erection.
Corpus cavernosometry
Cavernosography measurement of the vascular pressure in the corpus cavernosum. Saline is infused under pressure into the corpus cavernosum with a butterfly needle, and the flow rate needed to maintain an erection indicates the degree of venous leakage. The leaking veins responsible may be visualized by infusing a mixture of saline and x-ray contrast medium and performing a cavernosogram.[20] In Digital Subtraction Angiography (DSA), the images are acquired digitally.
Magnetic resonance angiography (MRA)
This is similar to magnetic resonance imaging. Magnetic resonance angiography uses magnetic fields and radio waves to provide detailed images of the blood vessels. Doctors may inject a "contrast agent" into the patient's bloodstream that causes vascular tissues to stand out against other tissues. The contrast agent provides for enhanced information regarding blood supply and vascular anomalies.

11.2011. Hello to all the fans of my curvy figure. It's good to know us girls over 30 and over 150lbs can still turn some heads. I appreciate your appreciation. Since I am an amateur photographer, I do not charge a fee for use of my photos and hold a creative commons license so that someone who wants one of my photos is not limited by a fee or licensing. That being said, this curvy girl loves her pets and has a dog in trouble and not a budget to give him the help he needs. I have set up a ChipIn page to collect donations for my Corgi Sampson's $2,000+ surgery to fix a perineal hernia. Please click on the link below to read our anifamily's story and make donations via paypal. Any donation is greatly appreciated, but if you favorite, save or display my photos on your computer or website, I would like to ask that you donate $1 per photo. Whenever there is a Live Demo in the operating room (as in they do the surgery in the operating room on the 3rd floor and the view is transferred to our Auditorium in the 8th Floor), the Director of the Hospital always wants me to take pictures of the Guest Doctor performing the surgery and straight away print the pictures to be given as presents.
This time, I'm using Canon 7D with the 18-135mm kit lens the hospital just bought. Usually I used Sony point and shot.
Pretty hard to take pictures with doctors body blocking the view. I only got the light from the Surgical Lamp pointing from above and the room light.
In this image, I tweaked the White Balance using 2500K (as suggested by Joe McNally's Hot Shoes Diaries).
By the way, I choose this one to print and give to the guest doctor. :)
Comments are welcome.
Second hernia surgery done. End of my extended holiday from work less than eight weeks away. At that point I will be editing the above photo in Aviary and using the Orientation tool to rotate it 180° but, until then I will continue to purchase lottery tickets, be thankful for having been given this wonderful period of the 'good life' and secretly hope that the doctor has f***ed up again! Ha! HBW

I'm glad there is so much wildlife to photograph from the comfort of my front porch. Hernia surgery kicked my butt.

It was nice to have a bit of sun for my first sit in the "shed hide" for a couple of weeks, even if there wasn't anything out of the ordinary about.

WHEN A MEMBER OF THE BROTHERHOOD OF FAGGOT CHURCH CUSTODIANS.
At the time I was seeing another church custodian, also an atheist. He worked for the Lutherans. What would these idiotic religions do without us to clean up after them - or preach to them, I have never met a male Methodist minister who wasn't either gay or had a gay son or both.
Have you been sweating blood over your religion and the recent bloodletting? Well why not let it lay and take a walk on the free side?

15 JUNE 1977 CHICAGO - RONNIE TO DAVID
I ran into Allan K at Le Pub when they announced that there was going to be a demonstration against Anita Bryant at the Water Tower. So, we went down and there were probably one hundred fifty others there i.e.: FBI, Chicago’s’ Finest, and us. So, everyone was standing around with their candles and one thing led to another and it ended with Allan and I leading the march around the Water Tower, with the newspapers there taking our pictures. Five days here and I did that. I don’t believe it.

A BIRTHDAY GREETING FROM A CHURCH CUSTODIAN TO A FLORIST
Dearest Ronnie,
This is your birthday card, if you don’t believe it just look on the back, it is written there that it is. And since neither of us will be on North Sheridan on der Tag, here it is now.
I just hope it is weird enough to please. Life is so amusing. In the past two months there have been twenty-three arsons here, twenty-four if you count the wino who was set on fire under the railroad bridge at Sixth Street
There is a thirty-foot-tall Magnolia blooming at the corner of the Sears and Roebuck antebellum house of West Fourth at Vermont.
Then last night there was the old drunken Sioux standing at the west foot of the Fourth Street Bridge. He offered to pay me two dollars to fix his rosary which had been given him by Pope Pius on a papal trip to Chicago. He also personally knew all the Roman Catholic prelates in Iowa. He is strictly Catholic and was a movie star.
Once I got the rosary wired back together, he asked me for two dollars.
Please write as soon as you are settled in your new apartment. I may send you a proposal for a drawing game.
Give my best wishes to David.
Love,
David

LETTER FROM A CHURCH CUSTODIAN TO A BANK CUSTODIAN:
"Remember what I wrote about last Sunday? I found out more today. The high school students who were having a bake sale not only bought some of their goods from Hy-Vee (then repackaged them to sale at a markup) but also stole more goods from the deaconesses who had brought things for the new members reception and had left them in the back refrigerator. These students then sold the stolen goods to the congregation. Rich Kids, you know.
Today the women’s fellowship held a luncheon and program for fifty women. After the film was over and most of the women had left, one had a stroke.
Waterloo Ambulance is extremely good so she was quickly transported to an E.R. After the ambulance left, the room had to be completely redone for a dinner tomorrow…but not because of the medical emergency, it just needed to be reconfigured.
Isn’t life a thin and tasteless broth that looks rich and delicious – from a distance. I’ve seen a photo of Mr. B. taken last April. My, has he ever gotten old and haggard! Looks almost thirty!
I’ve just finished cleaning the churches' incinerator (no I didn’t find any gold teeth). It was a shitish job.
Ashes to ashes,
Dust to dust."

LETTER FROM A BANK CUSTODIAN TO A CHURCH CUSTODIAN:
The Moon in the morning has been so beautiful. Tuesday it was plump and golden and this morning much higher, distant, and silver hazed by the fog. Even one of the VIPs at the bank made some remark -- rare.

LETTER FROM A CHURCH CUSTODIAN TO ANOTHER CHURCH CUSTODIAN
Arriving at work today I noticed a screen had been removed from a window. Before nine Friday night, someone had broken a lancet window in an old door then, dripping blood, ransacked the choir room, broke out glass from two other doors to steal telephones, office machinery and a microwave oven and a VCR player from the coffee hour room
The cop from the crime lab wasn’t very good at this job. But he used to cut my fathers’ hair and remembered me. His voice, Gerald! His voice – from it alone he should be in the drag shows tomorrow.
I wish that SOB burglar had just bled out right there. If I had found his dead body, I would have pissed on it before I called the cops.
August 15, 1984
Walking to work in the morning I cut through the County Building, there, I sometimes scan the Des Moines Register. I was doing so this morning when a sheriff’s lieutenant ordered me to stop or he would charge me with something, just what he would not say and I could not imagine. The sheriff couldn't come out to speak to me himself; perhaps the fat old thing was wedged too tight to get out of his six-hundred-dollar office chair (price quoted from a Courier story).
I walked to the library over lunch break and passing the Ritz Bar a man in a combat boot, black sleeveless shirt, camouflage pants, and hat printed with the motto “kill all you can” came out. Ugh.
On the way back to work, the city police (two young men dressed in business suits), turned sharply into a driveway blocking my path with their little unmarked car. They demanded my ID. When asked why, they would only say that they had had a report that someone who looked like me had been reported to be walking down that street. That Very Street!
Back at the church, I came upon an accident; a rather fat boy had just been struck by a car outside the church. He wasn't hurt badly and could walk after a while. The police never showed up for that. Perhaps harassing me had exhausted them and they were taking a nap.
Returning home after work I walked along the East bank of the river and there were a man and his teenage son (I think son) who were also walking by the river. They were both in pseudo military drag and wore T-shirts with skulls under the motto ‘Kill Them All’.
Help!
Whatever happen to "all you need is love” and that fellow who said something about ‘blessed are the peace makers? Didn't somebody shoot him?
At dawn on the next day a little rain fell. I can’t remember the last date we had rain.
October 30, 1984 Hospital Story
After the hernia surgery, no sooner than I was returned from recovery to my patient room than a young woman rang my telephone; she asked if she had reached the Waterloo Sickroom Supply Store. She hadn’t. Then a drunk called asking if Lisa was there. She wasn’t.
The incision was on the right side I had to roll over to my left each time I answered the phone and thought my guts were going to pull right out. So when I said goodbye to Lisa’s friend I placed the phone in my bed. Instantly, Doctor Gerard, my surgeon, burst into the room, said that I’d done real well then grabbed up the phone saying that I didn’t need that and placed it even farther away on the bedside table than it had been before and rushed out. The phone rang at once; it was the drunk again still asking for Lisa.
While I’d been in the OR, a young Redheaded school bus driver had been brought into the room suffering from a kidney stone. That first day he threw up every few minutes until late in the night. At last, he stopped and at last I slept but awoke at three and four. I got out of bed as I had become so congested that I could no longer breathe while lying on my back. I stood up until after seven AM, barefoot on the cold floor. At last, I had drained and was given a Sudafed so I returned to bed. I slept for about forty–five minutes when an orderly, Sid, awoke me to take a shower. I sent him away with a tongue lashing. He returned and after some more verbal abuse left for good. I settled down again to sleep, and then the unwanted breakfast tray came.
The Redhead who began throwing up again upon waking stopped throwing up in favor of calling everyone he knew telling them about the queer orderly who wanted to give us showers. I began to hate him, but later when his girlfriend, Shegundela, came I overheard him tell her that I was pretty cool for a queer.
She stayed until ten at night, two hours after the rest of the Universe (which had loudly crowded into his half of the room). With the Universe gone she felt free to get into bed and have sex with him – but they did close the curtain – civilized you know.
When she left, he turned on the TV loud enough to keep me awake then passed out from his last hypo. The next night was the same only that the Redhead had been to surgery and still had the stone upon returning, so Shegundela and I had to comfort him. He discovered that he had been catheterized in the OR which added panic to his despair. I rather liked that. In fact even all these years later, I still have warm and pleasurable feelings thinking about him crying. And he really was in tears from terror of the catheter.
From three till seven, while the Redhead was in the OR and recovery, I thought to get a bit of sleep. Good luck Davy, after an hour or so of rest, Dr. Gerard burst in to demand to know why I wasn’t up walking.
On Friday before I was discharged, a young woman called asking it she’d reach Dr. Jacobi’s office. Jacobi was a lovely elderly Panamanian Jew and Gerard's partner. By the way my room wasn't his office.
Oh, yes Sid did help me to the showers and was required as part of his job to stand in a corner to watch in case I fell. He certainly did watch and enjoyed what he saw even though I was swollen, bruised and just beginning to turn all shades of plum, and green and sick yellows. But far from being offended by his interest, I was rather flattered.
I came home from the hospital yesterday; it seems much longer. All that reaching for the wrong numbers had opened something within me causing bleeding which resulted in the psychedelic-colored bruising and the abdominal swelling which prevented the flies of my pants to close for a week. Any pressure against my wound is painful but I can cough a bit now, although the weight of blanket is more than I can stand for long without a burning sensation.
21 December 1984: A Pair of Constipated Owls
Freezing rain began falling before I awoke, and it is still pouring down at eight-thirty. I’ve been out in it from necessity and have gotten my feet and lower legs soaked and I am now sitting over an electric space heater drying out. The walks are covered with a hardening slush and then a flood of ice water. The gutters are running over with rapid gluts of water.
There is a house on South Street that has been decorated with strings of blue lights – so pretty in this grey morning. The lights were shut off just as I raised my camera.
The bosses have been quite unbearable during the past few days; it's like being caged with a pair of constipated owls.
May 21, 1985 Tuesday
The church was broken into last night and its’ computer (actually only a part of it), a typewriter and Tom’s (the associate minister) radio was stolen. The burglars entered through one of the windows in Tom’s office. Excuse me everyone; that is Tommy not Tom, Tommy is on his birth certificate. I'm very sure that he would like you to know that.
Dad is in hospital, but stabilizing. I am afraid that his heart has been permanently weakened by his stubborn foolishness. He’s afraid of doctors, and with the quacks Rath’s used as company doctors when he worked there, no one can blame him. We have real doctors now, but he’s afraid so he won’t go to them until it’s late in the game and then lies to them. I have to go into the exam room now to keep him from saying ‘oh I’m alright’ and then trying to divert the doctor into a conversation about sport. He’s really good at that.
May 23, 1985 Thursday
Last night at supper, Dad called from the hospital.
Then Jo Siddens called to ask about bus service as her car was disabled.
Then Dola Voshel called because she couldn’t reach her mother Alyce Cousins on Lafayette Street. I promised to investigate.
Then Martha B. called to ask about the burglary at the church.
The irises are in full bloom.
P.S. Upon investigation, Alyce was alright and I did finish supper before bed.
June 9, 1985 Sunday
Father is very unwell and restless. It is depressing and wearing. Each night is a long ordeal.
Arriving at work today, I noticed a screen had been moved from a window. Someone had broken into the church before nine Friday night and stole a VCR player from the Coffee Hour Room.

Yesterday was my day off. When I got to work this morning, no one was in the building. The security lights were not on but the air conditioner in the computer room was, as well as a large coffee urn in the kitchen.

I can't help but think that the Bank Of America people and the cafe could have had their furninshings more in keeping with the style of the building. Notice the monel stand on the right, that was part of the original design. In any case, still a great experience to visit the Guardian Building.

Hello friends! The new Flickr format has made me so "homesick" for all of you. Although I found it somewhat disorienting at first, I am just loving seeing all your amazing images in this larger format. Are you finding it as inspiring as I am?
So much has been going on in my life since I've been away. This month alone I've recovered from hernia surgery, applied to a four-year part-time Applied Arts program in New York, and sold two of my photographs at auction!
I've continued to take lots of photographs (especially on film), but have enjoyed some time away from my camera too. It's been good to clear my head, and to remind myself of my original intentions when I first joined Flickr. I truly love the medium of photography, and I want to get better at it. Your images inspire me, and being a part of this community feeds me creatively and spiritually. Thank you for that. And thank you for all the ways you encourage and support me in my efforts. It means so much to me.
