Though looking rather old, this water level regulator is still in use. It is part of the water purification system established around 1882 in order to produce drinking water for Basel, Switzerland.

On the front side of our house we have planted a group of flowers collected from the gardens of late relatives. These Iris are from my wife's grandfather's garden in New York State. Easily dating back to at least the 1800s.

Mergers can get pretty confusing. Sante Fe and Burlington Northern colors, Great Northern, C&S, and BNSF markings all found on these two old diesels bound, probably, for the scrap yard.
Another dream of a night watching the sun sink in the west. I had the coldest ride yesterday with a penetrating wind, but as always it was great to get out and see the coast for a few minutes. I can't wait till I can stay down there and chase sunsets again, and pick the fallen peaches. Fallen Peaches is by The Handsome Family.

This almost never happens to me. Train 112, led by Reading heritage SD70ACe 1067, waits in the siding at Golden Gate, IL while empty coal train 708, led by Savannah & Atlanta heritage SD70Ace 1065, heads east on the main.
Another archive shot of a typical beach day, a sky full of happy clouds being puffed along on a playful wind. Days at the coast can be so bright and are always happy and life affirming. Ride like the wind is by Frank Zappa

The old high street at Gravesend, Kent. Behind me and my camera is the river Thames. Very easy to imagine days gone by when the boats would dock here from London.

Heritage mill Blokweer at the Kinderdijk UNESCO Site during Verlichtingsweek. This is a week where the mills are displayed in floodlights in the evening.
During this particular evening it became hazy, as a result of a warm day with some heavy rainshowers. As it cooled in the evening, the moist atmosphere became hazy, giving a nice effect to the highlighted mill.
Three years after Union Pacific acquired Southern Pacific, a manifest rolls south down the Shasta Route. The train is highballing Hotlum siding, named for a glacier up on Mt. Shasta. It is a fine Saturday afternoon in Siskiyou County, California on fall 1999's first weekend.
Aside from the General Electric locomotive leading the train, there are no visual clues that The Friendly Espee is not still lord of the property. Generally, SP did not operate GE's north of Roseville. However, big changes will be coming soon, making this a day to savor.

Spring is barely springing on this cloudy morning as Amtrak No. 5, the westbound California Zephyr, passes through Arvada, Colorado at mile 9.75 on UP's Moffat Tunnel Subdivision. The streamliner is running 27 minutes late out of Denver as it heads toward the Front Range. Up front is the newly painted heritage unit 164 followed by the 54 and 7 cars. After dealing with a career filled with deadlines and pressures I try to avoid those situations now. When I participate in art shows I often get asked to come out and photograph people's barns but I rarely do. But a family of siblings asked me to photograph this deteriorating heritage of their great-grandfather who built this barn in the late 1800s and I found it hard to turn them down.
