White Pelicans
I didn't realize White Pelicans were herders until i watched them do it - they gather in the water (about 20 of them) in a straight line - shoulder to shoulder - they then began to stir the water in front of them, driving any fish near the surface forward of their movement - then the ends of the line (to the right and left) began to move faster than those in the middle and they began to close the line and eventually formed a circle, trapping the fish - then they all starting eating - in this photo the are getting close to encircling the fish.

The wild Elk are grazing at the foot of the mountains in Colorado in early winter. A few snowflakes fall. The fence at the bottom of the mountain was installed to keep wild herds from going into forests where they destroy trees by chewing on the bark.
Flicker friends, stay safe and healthy during these trying times.
This being the first time Yuki came in contact with a hay bale in the field she didn't understand why it wouldn't respond when she tried to herd it. So there was a long process of a stare down. When she felt she taught it a good lesson she walked away satisfied.
It's the time of year when baitfish start forming into thick balls and herons and egrets start playing ball. Great Egret with gulf menhaden on Horsepen Bayou.
A Victorian lighthouse in South Shields, Tyneside.
The lighthouse was built in 1882, before the North and South piers were constructed, and was first used on 30th October of the same year. It is 13 metres high and still acts as a navigational aid today, guiding ships in and out of the Tyne from up to 13 miles away. The lighthouse is also one of just a few in this country that has an operational fog bell.
Aiko is a herder
Normally his breed herds reindeers or sheep
But he likes to keep track of the people he wants to have around himself
Not easy to herd a flock when the guy he is trying to find has gone away for weeks
Mark was here last time, mom
Where is he now?
I can't find him....
When I let him off the leash Aiko went straight to the spot where he was alone with Mark
He is definitely missing his dad
They really have a lovely bond
And that is something that warms my heart
He'll be back Aiko, he will be back
My idea of a dream job would be photographing horses...this lovely group were in South Dakota just off 1-29.
Maybe 20 or 30 red-breasted mergansers were cruising around the inlet in a pack, looking under the surface, diving, and scooting across the water in short bursts. I've read that they sometimes hunt as a group, herding schools of small fish into shallow water. That may have been what was happening here. SW CT
