The Hooded Merganser:
Spotted this Female Hooded Merganser Strutting Her Stuff after finishing a breakfast of Frog Legs alfresco. The legs were still attached to the frog, so it took her awhile to dine, but she seems to have had a Happy Ending : )
Hooded Mergansers are fairly common on small ponds and rivers, where they dive for fish, crayfish, and other food, seizing it in their thin, serrated bills. They find their prey underwater by sight. They can actually change the refractive properties of their eyes to improve their underwater vision. In addition, they have an extra eyelid, called a “nictitating membrane,” which is transparent and helps protect the eye during swimming, like a pair of goggles.
Hooded Merganser ducklings leave their nest cavity within 24 hours of hatching. First, their mother checks the area around the nest and calls to the nestlings from ground level. From inside the nest, the little fluffballs scramble up to the entrance hole and then flutter to the ground, which may be 50 feet or more below them. In some cases, they have to walk half a mile or more with their mother to the nearest body of water.
The oldest recorded Hooded Merganser was a male and at least 14 years, 6 months old when he was shot in Mississippi in 2009. He had been banded in Minnesota in 1995.

El claustro de Silos es de doble planta, siendo la inferior la más antigua, que se levantó en la segunda mitad del siglo XI y primera del XII, mientras que el claustro superior se construyó en los últimos años de ese mismo siglo.
Como rasgos diferenciadores, los fustes de las columnas de la primera etapa están más separados y presentan mayor éntasis, y las tallas son de poco relieve y escaso movimiento. Las figuras del segundo taller son más realistas y poseen mayor volumen.
En el plano artístico lo más destacable es la colección de los 64 capiteles de que consta el claustro bajo y los relieves que ornamentan las caras interiores de las cuatro pilastras que forman los ángulos de la galería.
The Silos cloister has a double floor, the lower one being the oldest which was built in the second half of the 11th century and the first half of the 12th, while the upper cloister was built in the last years of that same century.
As differentiating features, the shafts of the columns of the first stage are further apart and present greater entasis, and the carvings are of little relief and little movement. The figures from the second workshop are more realistic and have greater volume.
On an artistic level, the most notable is the collection of 64 capitals that make up the lower cloister and the reliefs that decorate the interior faces of the four pilasters that form the corners of the gallery.

04-April-2022: after a month and a half, the African Anticyclone moves away and this opens the way to a strong and humid southern current in the upper part of which Sahara dust, originally raised by sandstorms, is suspended.
The African anticyclone has been creating many "problems" since it became the absolute protagonist of the new millenium Europe meteorological patterns, but also more than an opportunity for occasional shots in original colors.
The aforementioned air mass, originally very dry, has crossed the entire Central Mediterranean loading itself with humidity, and has reported (albeit in a very irregular way) the rains and snowfalls that have allowed to end the acute phase of the drought referred to in the previous photos.
Desert sand, in this case, is welcome!

Der Mäusebussard (Buteo buteo) ist ein Greifvogel aus der Familie der Habichtartigen und der häufigste Vertreter dieser Familie in Mitteleuropa. Er ist mittelgroß und kompakt, das Gefieder variiert von Dunkelbraun bis fast Weiß. Er kann oft bei seinen kreisenden Segelflügen oder bei der Ansitzjagd beobachtet werden. Sein Lebensraum sind offene Landschaften wie Wiesen, Äcker und Heide mit angrenzenden Waldgebieten, in denen er sein Nest baut.
Sein Verbreitungsgebiet umfasst ganz Europa mit Ausnahme Islands und des Nordens von Skandinavien. Nach Osten reicht das Areal bis Zentralasien. Kleinsäuger machen den Hauptteil seiner Nahrung aus, es gehören aber auch andere kleine Wirbeltiere, Insekten und Regenwürmer zum Nahrungsspektrum. Mäusebussarde sind überwiegend Teilzieher. Die Überwinterungsgebiete liegen in Mitteleuropa, Nordafrika, dem Nahen Osten und Indien. Der Mäusebussard ist nicht gefährdet, und seine Bestände nehmen, nach starker Verfolgung bis ins 20. Jahrhundert hinein, wieder zu
Merkmale
Der Mäusebussard ist ein mittelgroßer, kompakter Greifvogel. Er ist 51 bis 57 Zentimeter lang und hat 113 bis 128 Zentimeter Flügelspannweite.[1] Die Flügel sind relativ breit, der relativ kurze Schwanz ist am Ende abgerundet. Während des kreisenden Segelfluges werden die Flügel flach v-förmig aufgestellt. Die Handschwingenspitzen sind immer dunkel, der Schwanz meist durchgehend eng gebändert. Der Kropfbereich (Brustlatz) ist meist längsgestreift, seltener einfarbig weiß bis schwarzbraun und auch bei sonst heller Unterseite meist dunkel. Das oft hellere Brustband ist dunkel längsgestreift bei Jungvögeln und quergebändert bei Altvögeln. Die Unterschwanzdecken sind einfarbig, gefleckt oder gebändert. Die Federn an den Unterschenkeln, die sogenannten Hosen, sind einfarbig, gebändert oder längsgestreift. Die beiden zuletzt genannten Gefiederpartien können heller bei dunklen und dunkler bei hellen Unterseiten sein. Der Schwanz ist das sicherste Merkmal, um die Nominatform des Mäusebussards von seinen Unterarten und vom Raufußbussard zu unterscheiden. Bei der Nominatform des Mäusebussards sind die Schwanzfedern grau, braun oder rostrot mit acht bis zwölf dunklen Querbinden. Die weitere Färbung und Zeichnung ist sehr variabel.
