I think that I found Rainbow Teddy’s long lost cousin in the window. :)

The architectural facade of the public housing developments at (恆安邨 Heng On Estate) were painted in 紫色 purple and 綠色 green. These color choices seem completely random at first, but when the 洋紫荊 Bauhinia blakeana bloom from early November to the end of March, it made a lot of sense.

These orchid trees, also known as 香港蘭 Hong Kong Orchid Trees, could be seen were planted in rows near the entrance to the 恆安 Heng On MTR station in 馬鞍山 Ma On Shan.

洋紫荊 Bauhinia blakeana is an orchid tree of the genus Bauhinia with large thick leaves and striking purplish red flowers (豆科蘇木亞科羊蹄甲屬有花植物). Although now cultivated in many areas, it originated in Hong Kong in 1880 and apparently all of the cultivated trees derive from one cultivated at the Hong Kong Botanic Gardens and widely planted in Hong Kong starting in 1914.

In 1965, it was officially adopted as the floral emblem of Hong Kong (香港法定代表花卉 aka 香港市花) by the Urban Council. Since 1997 the flower appears on Hong Kong's coat of arm, its flag and its coins.

Someone on Flickr asked to see more photographs of the densely packed residential architecture in Hong Kong. Your wish is my command.

This is a panoramic photograph of 恆安邨恆悅樓 Heng On Estate Heng Yuet House spanning a field-of-view (FOV) of 50-degree (H) x 97-degree (V). It is stitched together using 26 RAW capture on the Canon EOS 7D.

No large format camera? No problem—pano to the rescue. As usual, Hugin is used to do the very challenging stitching. Rectilinear project is used here but it does appear to have a little bit of distortion. Will figure out what the problem was. It might have to do with that I shot this handheld.

Over-complication is a human fallacy. So when I photograph anything, I try to maintain focus and make sure that every form in the frame matters and contributes something to the capture. If it does not belong then I make sure that they are not included.

For photographs which there is no time to think (live action), I just shoot and then crop after the fact. But for things which stay put I take my time to compose before clicking the shutter.

In digital photography, cropping means lose of resolution and detail, so it is best to do it right at the moment of capture then trying to fix things in Photoshop after the fact. Photoshop is not magic, you know. The best Photoshop jobs do not look like it was ever Photoshopped. And I am not a one of those wizards who can wield magic. So I try to do it right where I can.

There is something gritty about this scene. I was reminded of some of iD Software’s many first person shooter games when I saw this. There are the pipes, the dirt, the multiplied boxes of no-one-knows-what. And then of course there are the lights.

To me this lives in the game world. It is interesting to me.

Hong Kong is one of the highest density cities in the world, mostly because while most cities in the world are built on flatland, Hong Kong’s geography is mostly made up with mountains and steep hill.

In fact, according to Wikipedia, More people in Hong Kong live or work above the 14th floor than anywhere else on Earth, making it the world’s most vertical city [1].

Pictured is one of the public housing architectures in Hong Kong. It packs a lot of population in a single block, while leaving enough space around buildings for breathing room.

This was shot earlier this month with the 7D. Not wide enough. Trust that I will be going back soon with the 6D.

A grove of bamboo glimpsed through a hole in a wall in a Hong Kong housing estate. In an attempt to make housing estates more attractive, planners incorporate small patches of gardens and landscaping.

The aesthetics of the maintenance workers leaves a little to be desired, however.
