A 50-unit AC4400CW order delivered in 1999 from General Electric doomed the two helper districts on KCS with the implementation of distributed power once again on the KCS mainline.
The railroad used radio-controlled locomotives (RCL) beginning in the 1970s on their trains, but reverted back to manned helpers based out of Neosho, Missouri, and Heavener, Oklahoma, to get heavy trains over the grade.
Here a southbound loaded grain train with 2x1 DP power glides along Butler Creek in the shadow of Butler's Bluff just south of Noel, Missouri. The train has conquered one of the three 1.5 percent grades in the Ozarks with the final two coming in quick succession in just a few miles.
With a myriad of issues plaguing the Amtrak P42DCs, a little help from big brother CSX comes in the form of the venerable ex-B&O Chessie GP40-2 #6145 as it leads the 2022 Autumn Colors Express slowly across the Sewell, WV, viaduct high above the chilly waters of the New River on the morning of October 23, 2022.

Wearing a replacement snowplow, Rio Grande SD50 No. 5513 leads a train of Geneva Steel coil and plate into Helper, Utah.
A helper set tacks onto the rear of C784 at East Grafton. Manned helpers are becoming more and more rare in this era of distributed power, but on grades as severe as those on the Mountain Sub the extra push from these helpers is irreplaceable.

A set of three Burlington Northern SD60Ms head downgrade back to Crawford, Nebraska, to push another coal load over Crawford Hill on July 21, 2003. A fuel tender is spliced into the power to lengthen the time between refueling for the busy helper set. Note the special device above the anti-climber on No. 9215 that lifts the pin allowing uncoupling of the helper on the fly at the summit at Belmont.

Denver and Rio Grande Western GP40 No. 3083 is the east unit on a helper set at Minturn, Colorado, in July 1984. Behind No. 3083 is a GP40-2, a SD40T-2, a SD45, and two more SD40T-2s. One track over in front of Minturn’s small enginehouse is GP35 No. 3043. These large helper sets were used on the steep 3-percent eastward grade up Tennessee Pass out of the crew change town of Minturn.

After bringing in the trash train a three unit set of Rio Grande tunnel motors rests in the yard at Helper.
With the train looped at Dalwhinnie for a few minutes we were able to jump 66421 and the 4H47 05:05 Mossend to Inverness 'Tesco Express' intermodal and get a shot of the working from Crubenmore where the line closely follows the River Truim.

At the beginning of lock down, I acquired hairbands in several colours. By the time salons opened and my hairdresser sent me an appointment, I found that I did not want to go to the salon but preferred to stay home and wear my hairbands
I was driving to photograph the bowling alley and these guys were walking to the gas station to get some gas. I picked them up and then all of the sudden rain started pouring down. They were so psyched. I brought them back to the interstate where they were left by the fact that their girlfriends hadn't filled it up. I told them they should forgive them and make them dinner instead of giving me money but they insisted I take $5. So I asked for their photo as well. They were grateful and so was I. Awesome.

In the summer of 2003, Crawford Hill on BNSF’s Butte Subdivision out of Alliance, Nebraska, featured at least three sets of Cascade green three-window EMD SD60M helper sets, mostly equipped with a fuel tender. On July 22, 2003, a trio of these former BN EMDs rolls downgrade at Breezy Point just west of Belmont, heading back to Crawford after pushing a BNSF coal train over the grade.
