De Grote Schelpenteldag 2021 vindt plaats op zondag 14 maart 2021. Ook dit jaar dagen de organisatoren burgers uit om zeewaarts te trekken en volgens een vaste methode strandschelpen te verzamelen, te tellen en te identificeren. Nieuw zijn de online helpdesk, die assisteert bij moeilijk herkenbare soorten, en een telactie bij lagere scholen aan zee. 

Grootste kustburgerwetenschapsinitiatief van ons land 

De Grote Schelpenteldag is het grootste kustburgerwetenschapsinitiatief van ons land. De organisatie berust bij het Vlaams Instituut voor de Zee (VLIZ), EOS, Natuurpunt, Provincie West-Vlaanderen, de Strandwerkgroep, Kusterfgoed en de tien kustgemeenten. De tellingen kaderen binnen het Europese LifeWatch-project dat innovatieve methodes – zo ook burgerwetenschap – inzet om de biodiversiteit van onze zee in kaart te brengen. De organisatoren roepen die dag iedereen op om zeewaarts te trekken en op het strand schelpen te rapen. 

60 soorten schelpen 

De voorbije drie edities verzamelden en identificeerden honderden deelnemers op onze stranden zo meer dan 100.000 schelpen van bijna 60 soorten. Dankzij deze tellingen weten we onder andere dat dit de top-10 schelpen van onze kust zijn: (1) Halfgeknotte strandschelp: 24%, (2) Kokkel: 24%, (3) Nonnetje: 15%, (4) Mossel: 9%, (5) Amerikaanse zwaardschede: 6%, (6) Zaagje: 5%, (7) Amerikaanse boormossel: 4%, (8) Grote strandschelp: 2%, (9) Stevige strandschelp: 2%, (10) Tapijtschelp: 1%.

Interesting approach in Amsterdam

After six weeks of not very splendid isolation and hours spent talking to unhelpful helpdesks I've finally been reconnected to the internet...despite the repeated assurance from my provider that I wouldn't be connected until the 31st of July (DUH!).

I can't tell you how much I've missed flickr (not to mention e-mail, google, and the ability to look something up in a split second). Life without the web has become pretty difficult and darn impractical!
