The one and only 'escargot', or Roman Snail. Fully apreciated by some with butter and garlic

A tall sculpture named 'Helix' in Central London.

Helix (1998) by Eilìs O'Connell, founder of The Irish Sculpture Factory, at One Curzon Street, Mayfair, London W1.

Helix pomatia, common names the Roman snail, Burgundy snail, edible snail or escargot, is a species of large, edible, air-breathing land snail, a pulmonate gastropod terrestrial mollusc in the family Helicidae. It is a European species. In the English language it is called by the French name escargot when used in cooking (escargot simply means 'snail'). Although this species is highly prized as a food, it is difficult to cultivate and rarely farmed commercially.

I used a custom-made camera rotation tool (CRT) to shoot inside the interior of Helix Pedestrian Bridge. A single exposure with the lens cap replaced between each 30 degrees rotation. Camera settings: f/16 - ISO 100 - 409 seconds

Helix nebula NGC 7293 is the largest and closest planetary nebula to us. It’s about 450 ly distance. This beautiful nebula resembles an eye in the space. This form of nebula represents the final stages in the star life where the star repelled its outer shell into the space and shrink to form white dwarf star. This star emits very powerful stellar winds & radiations, that ionize Oxygen & Hydrogen gases to emit Blue & Red colors respectively. Gear setup: Celestron HD11 f/7, iOptron CEM70G, ZWO 2600MM, Antlia Ha, Oiii 3nm filters. Lights Ha 70 x 300sec, Oiii 80 x 300, total exposure 10 hours. Captured by NINA, PHD2. Stacked in APP. Processed in PI & PS. Imaged from sky Bortle 4.

This beautiful large planetary nebula is located in the constellation Aquarius. The Helix Nebula is approximately 695 light years from Earth, and presents a fairly large target, almost one-half the diameter of the moon.

My intent was to merge both traditional RGB and Narrowband into a hybrid image using 6 filters to reveal three things. The first included the amazing cometary knots extending away from the central star in a radial direction. Their scale is simply amazing as most are believed to be about the size of our solar system.

The second stems from my fascination of galaxies. I wanted to reveal the many galaxies located both within the core and throughout the outer halo extending away from the Planetary Nebula.

The final goal was to retain the lovely teal colour of the core and reveal the beautiful colours in the stars surrounding NGC 7293 including the bluish central star. The rare teal colour found in planetary nebula can often be removed during imaging processing.

The total time for this image is around 64 hours.

At the heart of the Château de Chambord is a double helix staircase reputedly designed by Leonardo da Vinci. The two opposing staircases wind around a central illuminated well, up to the top of the chateau where they meet in the roof. Legend suggests that this configuration was designed so that the king, could arrange clandestine meetings with his mistresses at the top. The steps are supposed to be sufficiently shallow that a lady would not tire in ascending them.

Hope you have enjoyed the weekend. Thanks, as always, for stopping by and for all of your kind comments, awards and faves -- I appreciate them all.

This is a second look at this Nebula with a whole new Camera QHY183C a replacement for the ZWOASI183MC that was faulty. I could focus automatically with this camera hence the detail in the eye is much better than the first one with the ZWO. This camera took a bit to get use to as I had to change wires and ports on the computer to get this to run and download photos.

The Helix Nebula (also known as NGC 7293 or Caldwell 63) is a planetary nebula (PN) located in the constellation Aquarius. Discovered by Karl Ludwig Harding, most likely before 1824, this object is one of the closest of all the bright planetary nebulae to Earth. The distance, measured by the Gaia mission, is 655±13 light-years. It is similar in appearance to the Cat's Eye Nebula and the Ring Nebula, whose size, age, and physical characteristics are in turn similar to the Dumbbell Nebula, differing only in their relative proximity and the appearance from the equatorial viewing angle.[5] The Helix Nebula has sometimes been referred to as the "Eye of God" in pop culture, as well as the "Eye of Sauron".

The London School of Economics Library recently invited me back to photograph their interior, and having visited twice over the past year, most recently last December, it was fun to come back for a third time and try to capture the location from a different vantage point.

Even late in the evening and outside of university term time, the library was filled with visitors. While I waited for the place to quieten down, I selected a spot on one of the middle levels, looking towards the spiral ramp that circles the lift shaft throughout the atrium. My aim when shooting this scene was to try to convey the elegance of the lines, curves and complementing patterns, and at the same time a sense of the scene’s energy and creativity. As people gradually made their way down the ramp, two people caught my eye: one lady wearing a red head scarf, and another who was one level higher, leaning on the balcony and absorbed in an intense conversation on her phone. I was torn over which one to keep in the final image, and in the end settled on both, as I felt this reflected the depth and scale of the location, and perhaps more importantly how much was going on in the library at the same time.

The final image is a mixture of exposures: two sets of nine bracketed exposures, blended in Photoshop using luminosity masks to balance the highlights and shadows, and then combined to mask out lifts as they moved up and down the lift shaft. I then captured an additional exposure for the lady walking down the ramp, which required a much faster shutter speed and therefore a higher ISO and a wider aperture.

With the exposures blended and the emphasis on a high-key finish, I shifted the colour balance towards a palette with hints of cyan and green in order to complement the pristine surfaces and brilliant-white tones across the building. While the image was already bright and airy, I wanted to play this up even more, so I added a low-opacity Gradient Map and set the blend mode to screen, excluding the highlights while further brightening the midtones and shadows. Finally, using Nik plugins, I gently amplified the whites and added a Pro Contrast filter, which helped to give the details a little more definition and made the image pop.

The library wanted images without people so I’m unlikely to be able to supply this take to them, but it was a fun exercise and a joy to photograph, and also an interesting exploration of how people visiting a location can interact with their surroundings and complete the scene.

I captured this view of NGC7293, aka the Helix nebula, aka "The eye of Sauron", using a remote telescope.

As my equipment is not with me at the moment, I had to find another way to combat astrophotography withdrawal.

I could rent some time on a 60 cm telescope in Chile.

This is a stack of 9x 300s in Ha, 9x 300s in SIII and 2x 180s luminance.
