Saturday's flower. MK's orchids chuckling and showing off their colors. :-)
Hope everyone is having a great weekend. :-D
These belonged to my grandfather and maybe his father. They are well over 100 years old. The pieces are bone pegged to very dark heavy wood that might be ebony. They are very tactile and make satisfying clacks in play!
Not lined up for play here, but "In a Row" nonetheless. For Macro Mondays. 65 layer focus stack rendered with HeliconFocus and Affinity Photo. Foreground FOV is about 1.3 inch wide.

Small and new plastic bristled dustpan brush. Fragments from manufacture are still between the bristles. Here is a dust mote's eye view before being swept away.
42mm f/5.6 macro, 45 focus layers rendered in HeliconFocus and then Affinity Photo. The occasional colour traces are real and from refraction of two lamps through the transparent bristles. The bristles also act as light fibres.
Bristle foreground is 1.5" wide and field width at brush head is under 3". For Macro Mondays "5letters"

#Backlit
Well, no, "Backlit" wasn't a snap, it never is. We've had this theme a few times, and I've struggled with it every single time. I don't know why exactly because I often use back-light for my macros, but when it's specifically asked for... The human brain can be a weird "machine", right? ;)
So this is a withered, dried, but still very graceful and lovely snapdragon (in German, it's Löwenmäulchen, "lion's mouth") petal collected from the balcony a week or so ago, and focus stacked to get all the nice backlit details. Ironically, it was one of the first photos I've taken today, but I was in this "Oh no, a petal is boring, let's try this, no, this is boring, too, let's try that..."-mood, so I took numerous photos of different things before I checked the time. "Oh dear, it's already that late!" So I quickly flipped through all the images in DXO PL6, and realized that the final jpg of the in-camera focus stacking snapdragon petal series actually looked fine. But I still wanted to see what Helicon Focus could do regarding the details and the (back) light artifacts, and the results were even better. Method C/Smoothing 4 yielded the best final results, and this is what you see here.
Setup: Snapdragon petal propped up against a small glass jar for stability, single LED light placed behind the glass jar. The glass jar helped a little to distract/diffuse the light which had been too harsh with the LED lamp placed directly behind the petal. Since the tiny jar was still a little bigger than the petal, there was some of it visible in the final image, so I masked the background out in LR (or rather: LR did it for me) and reduced the blacks, depths, lights, whites, exposure, clarity (in other words: everything) to zero to black out the backdrop. In PS/Color Efex, I used the "Brilliance and Warmth" filter to slightly increase the perceptual saturation and to add a little more warmth to the colours. Done. Finally :)

Stupid aliens, they thought that planting their young in figs would be a great way to allow them to develop and grow. They didn't realize that humans love to eat them!!
Another good snack and sometimes I just never know how things are going to turn out! When I went to the store to pick up the sardines, I saw they had fresh figs so I bought a container as I do like figs, both fresh and dried. I could have shot a fig as it met the criteria for the weekly theme and size was not an issue. In the end, I stuck to the plan and went with the sardines as a bit of a challenge into food photography. Who knew the inside of a fig would look so cool, quite alien.

This tiny tape measure – just 35mm square – is decades old. It was a promotional gift from a scientific instrument company, Analysis Automation. That has long gone but the tape's "AA" logo continues to promote it.
Most sales gifts have short lives. Pens, memory sticks and other geegaws soon go. In contrast, this incredibly handy and useful little tool is still in frequent use. The marks on the first inch have worn away yet that's no impediment - 35 more inches to go. I would be bereft if it was ever lost!
For Macro Mondays - "Swag". A 45 level focus stack rendered in HeliconFocus and Affinity Photo.

Themes with a free choice of photo subject all too often are tricky for me because usually I'm overwhelmed with that freedom of choice ;) So for "In a Row", my mind went blank when it came to choosing what I could line up in a row. But I also knew that I definitely wanted to participate, because back in 2016 (!) the theme for what was only my second participation in MMs had been "In a Row" as well (you can find that photo in the first comment, if you like). As so often, too, postponing the photoshoot to Monday and hence imposing a little bit of time pressure on myself helped tremendously: If I wanted to participate, I had to find similar subjects to line up – and I had to find them fast. So I walked around the apartment, looked into drawers, and at what I have on my bookshelves, and there it was: my perpetual calendar bullterrier thingy, a cute-looking black (strange enough) bullterrier stoneware figurine that holds four small stoneware cubes with numbers, weekdays, and months printed on all sides of the cubes. I have already used these "date cubes" for another MM theme as well, my fourth MM participation for our "Edge" theme (also from October 2016 – it's in the first comment, too).
The date had to be Monday 17 July, of course, even though it's a little cliché, but I thought it would be stupid to choose a random date to avoid using today's MM date. A fun coincidence is that the date you can see on the cubes' upper sides, Friday 15 December, will be correct in a few months to come because this year, 15 December will indeed be a Friday :)
Setup: To achieve the multiple/infinite reflection effect, I used two different mirrors that are part of an infinity mirror tea light holder. It consists of a regular mirror that is placed behind the actual tea light holder and a translucent piece of glass with a special reflective coating that is placed in front of the tea light holder. For the photo, I put that piece of glass directly onto the mirror and placed the date cubes (size of each cube: 1 cm³/0,061 in³) on top of it. The final image is a focus stacking made of 15 DNGs which I've combined in Helicon Focus. The stacking method that yielded the best results was method A, radius 8, smoothing 4. Processed in DXO PL6, Color and Analog Efex, and Lightroom (primary color sliders boost).
