Small rubber-tracked skid steer moves sandy soil around the job site. Note the elevated drive sprocket which helps keep it clear of mud and other debris which can shorten the life of the drive mechanism.

They are finally applying the asphalt to grade level on State Highway 49 in Bridgeton. This project started in the fall of 2007, so it's been almost two years. This is the same intersection shown in www.flickr.com/photos/samfeinstein/3562595259/ so I guess there will be no more flooding problems. You can see that they've made a little progress on the Walgreen's, too.
This was taken about 9:10 PM and they are working with huge lights so they can avoid closing the road in the daytime. Yes, some of the details on the truck under the floodlight is blown out, but I'll accept that with the dynamic range in this image. Since the men and machine were in motion and I just happened upon this scene, I could not really think about multiple exposures for HDR. Nevermind that I've never done an HDR anyway. I did shoot this RAW, because I wanted to capture as much detail from shadow to highlight as I could and also because I don't know what kind of light the floodlights are putting out. It turns out that I didn't adjust the WB at all, as it looks pretty real to me. I put the lightest parts of the truck at 2 stops over and the rest of the scene looked pretty natural to me. I did dodge 3 of the workers who were not quite bright enough for me and I was happy to see that the detail remained intact. I see I also nudged the exposure up one tap in post, too. I'm pretty happy with the performance of the D300 at ISO 1600.

This is an interesting shot for another reason. It was previsualized. When I saw those huge floodlights standing on the side of the road at noon, I realized that this opportunity would exist as they worked after dark. I did not know about the yellow safety vests or the yellow CAT. I did not know that I would catch them by the contrasting KFC bucket. I did imagine that I would see steam rising into the bright white flood lights and some men working. In many ways, I got lucky, but I count waiting 8-9 hours for this scene to play out as good planning on my part.

After the asphalt truck missed the hopper, the crew used a skid steer to put the asphalt back in the hopper.
The profiler was only cutting about three inches of pavement - but was rapidly filling up trucks. The truckers were hard pressed to keep the profiler operating.
Backhoe loader follows after profiler, dumping asphalt into temporary ramps for driveways and intersections.
Caterpillar excavator uses a toothless bucket to load large chunks of broken concrete into a waiting dump truck.

The only way into the neighborhood is a bit messed up...and will be for some time. I'm enjoying the photographic opportunity, though!
Compactor finishes over the intersection that was partly paved by the paver, and finished off with a truck dumping a pile of asphalt to be spread out with rakes.
Tar truck lays down a tacky mat surface to provide a bond between the old concrete base and the fresh asphalt.
